After the Second World War NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organization) has grown both in members and in purpose, from 12 to 32 members. With stated goals being originally a military alliance as a check against Soviet threat, and a response force for the region as a key arm of American and European diplomacy.
With the fall of the USSR, the organisation began to lose momentum over the decades. Now with the invasion of Ukraine NATO has grown in purpose and members once again, with Finland and Sweden joining over renewed threats from Russia.
