Very warm and bright town, at least it was when we last visited in 12 August 1187. Greetings from Karelia!

www.heritagedaily.com/2018/08/half-the-population-of-the-viking-town-sigtuna-were-migrants/121487 Roughly half of the individuals examined grew up in or around the Sigtuna area. The other half is equally divided in to regional immigrants (from southern Scandinavia, Norway and Denmark) and long-distance immigrants from further away: the British Isles, Ukraine, Lithuania, northern Germany and other parts of central Europe. The immigration to Sigtuna was common for both males and females. Approximately 70 per cent of the female population was immigrants, compared to 44 per cent of the men.

@@robinsinpost g'day robby. These are my thoughts, only 38 bodies examined. Its a very small sample size to be making such broad assertions. The normal cultural practice was cremation. No one will ever know the true numbers. And i think they are drawing the longbow saying that alot of the immigrants were from Norway and Denmark. Although i will concede that the name 'halfdan' seems to indicate that they at least thought the danes were foreign. But how foreign a person is, whos ancestors 1200 years later still speak a mutually intelligible language is anyones guess in my opinion. Anyway have a great day

Novgorodians captured the ancient capital of Sweden Sigtuna
@lithuanianwarrior1081
@lithuanianwarrior1081 3 года назад
Together with karelians, estonians, oeselians and curonians. But it was planned and executed mostly by novgorodians because swedes were at that time at a crusade killing pagan karelians, the allies of Novgorod.

How come sweden begins in sigtuna? Old uppsala among other places go farther bacl than the bronze age, i don't really buy the idea that only Christian towns were swedens first ones
@geem8011
@geem8011 Год назад
It doesn't, it's just the oldest town in Sweden which is still a "city" or town. The settlements of Helgö and Birka are much older. And also probably Old Uppsala.

Han'ba! What does Ingegerd have in common with Russia if Russia does not exist up to 1721 !? You do not know even where she was buried! She was buried in Kyiv, Ukraine. The center of Kyiv Rus state was in modern Ukraine. The language of Kyiv Rus state was old Ukrainian language!

The name Sweden was even described in Beowulf "Before the consolidation of Sweden, the Geats were politically independent of the Swedes or Svear, whose name was Sweonas in Old English. When written sources emerge (approximately at the end of the 10th century), the Geatish lands are described as part of the still very shaky Swedish kingdom"

Not a word about the Finnish Pagans, who looted and burned Sigtuna to the ground in 1187, weak.
@lateremortis6115
@lateremortis6115 8 лет назад
***** Yes, those raids occured frequently along the coastline of the Baltic Sea, that´s true but the interesting thing here is that you automatiacally assume it was swedes, who did this hahaha. This denying among swedes, that it could´ve been finns, who raided a swedish city is very interesting. Why do you find it so hard to accept that these vikings were Finnish Vikings?
@lateremortis6115
@lateremortis6115 8 лет назад
***** Well, this is nothing that I have invented, it´s all in the Chronicle of Eric. In this historical document, the oldest historical book in Sweden, we can read about many interesting events that occured in Sweden and in the Nordic countries in old times. In this book you can read about Pagans from Karelia coming to raid the swedish capital of Sigtuna in 1187. These Finnish Pagans killed the swedish jarl and the bishop of the city and all the christians, furthermore they burned the whole city to the ground. The swedes never re-built Sigtuna after this disaster, instead they found a new location for the capital of Sweden and this place was named Stockholm, but that´s a different story. Isn´t God Finnish? That´s a lie, dude!
@lateremortis6115
@lateremortis6115 8 лет назад
***** Sorry, I mean, Sigtuna lost its role as the capital of Sweden after this raid. Yeah, those raids were very common in those days.

+Paulatim Enim Mori now I won't claim to be an expert in Swedish (or Scandinavian in general) history, but weren't the Vikings Swedish, Danish and Norwegian and if I'm not mistaken these Vikings mostly became Christians around 900/1000, so if the Finnish were indeed Vikings they stayed pagan for longer than the most. Please correct me if I'm wrong

WHAT A SHAME! Absolutely incompetent information in a video! Russian Empire existed much more later than Kyiv Rus state! Swedish princess Igigerd was the wife of Yaroslav the Wise in the time of Kyiv Rus state which has nothing common with the Russian Empire of XVIII c.! Very sad dear Swedish scientists. So Kyiv Rus of IX-XIII centuries and Russian Empire of XVIII-XX centuries are TWO ABSOLUTELY DIFFERENT STATES! I demand a change of text from 4 min 54 seconds on: "Ingegerd Olofsdotter became a powerful woman by her marriage to Prince Yaroslav in the KYIV RUS STATE WHICH EXISTED FROM IX TO XIII CENTURIES MOSTLY ON THE TERRITORIES OF MODERN NORTHERN AND CENTRAL UKRAINE, BELARUS AND SMALL PART OF MODERN NORTHERN RUSSIA"! When you will drop to use old western stereotypes about the priority of Russian history, Russian language (Russian KIEV instead of Ukrainian KYIV), and Russian culture upon Ukrainian history, language, and culture!? I am waiting for the answer dear Swedish scientists! And the last question. What does mean the word SITUNA (Situna without word "G") on the first coins of Olaf Skotkonung?
