Thanks for another nicely done informative video, Angela. Btw, I've read that Pamela Colman Smith did draw the major arcana from the descriptions of Arthur Edward Waite and the minor arcana was almost entirely of her doing (she only used three images found in the older decks or something like that). And it's kinda sad that her name wasn't even included for quite some time when they started selling the deck.
I did my paper on Divination for my masters in divinity and it included the Tarot cards. I wish this was posted last year..☺️ Anyways very,very good information 👍🏿

That is so cool! I knew nothing about the cards. Kind of feel like I played a game when I had them read. And knowing it started in Italy, or at least how we know it, is cooler.
It should be mentioned that Tarot continues to be played as a game today. In Italy, Tarocchi is played with a modernized double headed deck called the "Tarocco Piemontese" There several varieties of the game mostly played in France and in Central Europe

It's admirable that you can be eloquent in English and that you put a lot of effort in pronunciation when it's not your first language. But it's also very nice to hear you speak your mother tongue, it's very pleasant to hear and you're noticeably more comfortable with it.
Are Tarot used for divination in Italian Signatura? Because what I understood, it had other purpose in Italy. For esoteric use it started abroad. I was using deck of the golden dawn. Their cards are really speaking to my conciousnes, but what was strange, I was not able to use it for myself, only for others, preferably strangers. Didn't heard about tree of Life connection. Hi, I appreciate that you can only convey so much in a short format video essay, and I don't want to discourage you at all from continuing to produce content (exactly the opposite in fact). However, I've watched a couple of your videos now (the others being the ones about the Leviathan and Sufism), and I just feel like there's nothing in any of them that I couldn't have gotten from scanning a wikipedia article. I know why your videos were recommended to me by the Algorithm, since you've mentioned channels whose videos I've also watched (Let's Talk Religion and Esoterica) but I feel like your videos generally end right when theirs would be getting into the meat of a subject, when they would start presenting some original scholarship and/or synthesis. Have you considered longer form videos, or perhaps two part videos (e.g. "intro to" for part 1, and a "deeper dive" for part 2)? You're tackling subjects that I really want to learn more about, and your presentation and delivery are awesome. And, yes, I know, I'm getting it for free so I'm really in no place to ask for anything else. Just some feedback for you to consider. Thanks.
Awesome research content. Always a thumbs up ! The Tarot would seem like a natural progression from a set of runes. If not for Waite, symbolism would still be chaotic and individualistic of the cards. While not a bad thing, its much easier to grasp at intuition with an underlying connotation. Thanks for that :)
Tarot's history in this video illuminates for me that they never were a source of divination with any illusory powers, they were just playing cards or later "tarrochi" fakes. I personally don't know how people can compare them to Astrology which is on another level entirely.
Actually Tarot connected to occult doctrines existed before the Golden Dawn as explained in “The Underground Stream: Esoteric Tarot Revealed.” The GD suppressed the truth about this. Angela is so knowledgeable, I’m surprised I could “trump” her on this!
Yeah, the minor arcana, the king, the chevalier, the jack, and the numbers, are just our traditional game cards. Four seeds, "sword", "rod", "goblet" and "coin", clearly symbols of royalty. To make it sound more exoteric in the tarots the "coin" is interpreted as a pentagram.
I reallt like your videos, but i must point out that AE Waite commissioned the illustrations to Pamela C. Smith, he did not illustrated them as you mentioned in the video. Just a lil errata for an overal amazingly researched video. Keep up the good work!
The Rider-Waite deck has its place in history for sure, but I'm sure if time weren't such an issue when shooting these, you would have brought it back to Crowley and the Thoth deck he designed and commissioned Lady Frieda Harris painted. Esoterically speaking, that is arguably THE deck to check out. Although it's fair of some to disagree with the whole "tzadi is not The Star," thing. Just in terms of the richness of the illustrations - the boatload of symbols they squeezed into each card, somehow without cluttering them and keeping them all super balanced and so, so pretty - they're wonderful. Draw a big picture of the Tree of Life and arrange a deck of those around it, you know, where they all belong, the paths from this to that. Well, I did anyway, and couldn't stop staring at the finished thing, letting stories jump out of that nameless, intangible place behind my eyes in the middle of this thing that's typing now. What a cool deck. Wow.

A 5th Card Suit was added to playing card decks in the 1420s, but none of these experimental decks have survived. Filippo Visconti’s secretary, Marziano da Tortona created his own version of this deck, but again, no physical deck survives, but a book on that deck exists in the Paris library. The Visconti-Sforza decks, which are the basis of modern Tarot decks were created from 1442 - 1463. The word Trionfi, was first used in 1440. The term “Major Arcana” was only coined in 1863.

what people have to understand is that gambling was not considered secular, Christians were very fatalistic, they didnt believe in chance, and so gambling is heretical, and sinful... not to mention the Goddess Fortuna, who also figures in Arthurian legends, and superstitions of knights etc.... then there is the other occult symbolism which was on the playing cards, which could be used for divination right from the beginning.
