Today we’re going to explore the history of Apple processors. There are four different series which power devices from the iPhone to the Apple TV, and may one day power your next MacBook, but we’ll talk about that later. So most of us know that Apple’s a company who embraces proprietary technology. While other companies outsource, Apple keeps things in-house whenever possible, and the chips found in iOS devices are no exception. While Samsung, Microsoft, and HTC rely on Qualcomm and Intel for chipsets, Apple has its own team of engineers to work on proprietary designs exclusive to their devices. And it all started in 2008 when Apple purchased a small semiconductor company called P.A. Semi for a rumored $278 million in cash.

If Apple does switch processors in the Mac line, it’ll be the fourth architecture they’ve used.

I would hope it would have some sort of compatibility to continue to run virtual machines through VMware or Parallels because it would otherwise be a deal breaker.
@jcfawerd
@jcfawerd 6 лет назад
I believe there would be some sort of compatibility in the form of virtual machines. Moreover, Apple may use this opportunity to force developers to use swift instead of Objective C as the only programming language, like what they did on CodeWarrior when they release Intel platform.
@GayNeekOG
@GayNeekOG 6 лет назад
Given that Microsoft has shown it can rewrite Windows to be able to run on ARM, and emulate x86 decently with Qualcomm 835. It won't be too far out that Apple will follow suit and come out with similar trick to ease the transition.

It depends which product lines you include. 6502 in Apple/Apple II series (65C816 in II GS)/Apple III, 680x0 in Macintosh until Power Macintosh, Power PC CPUs until 2006 when they switched to Intels Core architecture. So that would make it the 5th. But it would make it the 4th in the Mac product line.

Kind of a correction needs to be mentioned. The 64-bit aspect contributes relatively little to performance outside 64-bit integers. The ARMv-8 ISA contributed more to performance. For an example, ARM’s Cortex A53 (64-bit) is comparable to the Cortex A9 (32-bit) on a per clock basis. The A7 CPU provided such a large jump as they’d employed a much wider cpu core than the contemporaries of the time. A wider core allows more instructions to be executed in parallel, so I’m long as the front end of the cpu is able to split up the tasks to take advantage of the resources.

I'm sorry but you pretty much just read a long list of stats from wikipedia with zero work to help the audience understand what you were saying. In fact I highly doubt you even understood what you where saying. From basic grammatical constructs and pronounciation (it's "systems on a chip" not "system on a chips", and you generally refer to the ARM chip as "Arm" not "A-R-M") to what the move to 64-bit actually meant. You also completely misstated the move to Apple-designed processors. If you really wanted to say anything about the chips, you could have focused more on what ARM is, and why it's used instead of Intel. You didn't touch on any of the CPUs Apple used before moving to Intel for macOS/OSX focusing only on.. mobile devices, kind of? This was really shoddy work, filled to the max with ads.

+XPGaming while it may be that, there was a dearth of actual information that couldn’t be gotten from a wikipedia page. If it only served as a history, the half-baked technical information could have been left out (for example, the GPU inside the Apple chips weren’t Apple-designed).

Hello, I’m from the future. It is currently the 2024 we are about to see the unveiling of the iPhone 16. But back in 2020 Apple released their M1 chip for their MacBooks. They also went onto release the M1 Pro, M1 Max and M1 Ultra. The M1 had its backlash, but overall did very well. The main problem was people didn’t like the fact that Apple would charge way too much to upgrade the specs and due to the fact that everything was built in it had to be upgraded through Apple. Another problem was the fact that since they moved on to their own chips, it made it so people lost a way to convert their Mac machines into windows which now in 2024 there are some apps that are able to convert your Mac silicon machine into a Windows machine. They then also went onto released the M2, M2 Pro, M2 Max and M2 Ultra. They also went on to review the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max. We are still waiting on the M3 Ultra but instead Apple revealed a M4 chip which at this time did not come in a MacBook, but came in the iPad Pro. Yes in 2024 we already have iPads using MacBook processor. These Apple Silicon processors have became so powerful that we can now play a lot of intensive games like some triple A titles on all our devices. Including the iPhone. Apple is currently still working on getting a lot of games supported on their devices and Apple is still making their Watch lineup of chips. But here in the future, all the Apple device are pretty efficient with the respective OS and optimizations that could’ve only been done since Apple made the chips.😊

Great video. I think you should also talk about the processors used in Apple's original Macs as well as the PowerPC chips. Maybe even discuss why Apple decided to ditch PowerPC. The reason why Apple was able to move to Intel processors so easily was because the NeXT OS had been ported to Intel processors years before Apple bought NeXT, and then used the NeXT OS as the basis for OS X. This is why OS X was leading a "secret double life" as Steve put it at WWDC 2005.

The M series is also a big deal. It processes parts of the device that needs to be always on to recognise function. For example, the sensors and gyro of the device should always be aware of movement to know if the phone is picked up to enable Raise to Wake. Similarly, Tap to Wake uses the same processor for the touchscreen to always be readily functioning so that it recognises a tap to turn the screen on and trigger Face ID to function. Tap to Wake has been in the Apple Watch for a long time now, which means it used older M chips to function. Why wouldn't Apple put Tap to Wake on older phones?

Because you said that the W-2 is in the Apple Watch and then you also said about the S series of processors. So is the W the architecture for the S processors or are they two separate chips? Also, can you do an updated video containing the same processors but also include the a 12, a 12 X, a 12 Z, a 13, a 14, M1, S4, S5, as six, and h1?

History of Apple's usage of ARM chips started much earlier than the iPhone and acquisition of Intrinsity and/or PA Semi. First use of ARM chip in a Apple devices was the Apple Newton in 1993 with the the ARM 610 RISC CPU. In fact, Apple Computers, VLSI Technologies, and Acorn Computer Ltd of UK co-developed the ARM V6 architecture and co-founded Advanced Risc Machine (ARM) Ltd in early 1990s. The ARM610 series CPU can be seen as the father/grandfather of existing Apple A series CPU (depends on if it was a ARMv7 or ARMv8 architecture based.)

Just some corrections: The ARM cores used in the 3rd gen iPod touch and iPhone 3GS were not ARM11 based, but were based on the ARM Cortex A8 architecture. Silicon is pronounced as it's spelled, not like silicone. Silicone is a completely different material. Fun fact about the A4 was it was the exact same chip as Samsung's Hummingbird SoC.

Windows S can already run on ARM based CPUs and can emulate x86 legacy applications very well, Qualcomm and Microsoft are currently working on full x64 emulation. This means windows 10 will be able to work on an arm based Mac's bootcamp with little to no issue.

I have a great question if the iPhone 8, 8 S plus and iPhone X have the a 11 bionic chip why dose only the iPhone X have face ID?
@yusufhussein8204
@yusufhussein8204 6 лет назад
William Wins It All Face ID uses specific sensors in the notch to detect a face. It has nothing to do with the chip at all. Those sensors are absent from the 8 series, so Face ID is not there.

@KrishnaAdettiwar
@KrishnaAdettiwar 6 лет назад
William Wins It All the iPhone X Face ID feature doesn’t just scan your face in 2D. It actually uses a sensor which Apple calls the TrueDepth system which blasts thousands of infrared dots at your face to create a 3D map of your face and authenticate the user to login (so that masks and photographs can’t trick the facial recognition.) The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus doesn’t have the TrueDepth camera system so it cannot support Face ID.

Your videos have great quality. But limiting your channel to Apple-themed videos kind of bottlenecks it. Sooner or later, the topics for these History videos will end and you will not have much left to do. My advice would be for you to try and shift your focus to a Tech channel, with a special attention to Apple stuff.

Apple is really cheap with its chips so I don’t think they will make it an octocore cpu, at the most it will be a hexacore cpu. I know this doesn’t belong here at all but if I get a new phone this year I’m getting an s7 not a 6s, the s7 has so much more for the same price. The reason why I’m not getting a newer phone is cause I’m more of a budget guy and I want something around the range of $100 with the most features possible.

Gfjfj Ufidi it's because the way american loyalties work: Samsung has a similar tecnology to Qualcomm in his exynos modem (the thing that receive phone and wifi signal), so she should have paid Qualcomm for loyalties. So Samsung decided to produce less exynos chip and adopt directly the Snapdragon avoiding the cost of making exynos chipset for us and paying Qualcomm loyalties (yep buying the Snapdragon flagship chipset is less expensive then produce exynos chipset for us and paying loyalties to Qualcomm). Hope u understand, sorry for my bad english.
