Flyswatters with wire bristles and retractable handles are patented. Within a few years, drummers start to use these devices as a quieter substitute for sticks, renaming them "brushes" in the process.
In this 15-part series, Vic Firth and Daniel Glass will be looking at 100 years of drumming evolution. Learn about the key events and advancements that shaped the drumset we know and love today!

Very funny, because one day while playing a gig, a huge horse fly started circling us, trying to bite one of us. It's very hard to concentrate on your playing when this kind of thing is happening. Our drummer killed it dead with one deft hit of a brush!

You're brilliant. I also like the fact that you aren't racist, and show the true involvement of diverse ethnic groups (some are usually ignored by most educators).

It's pretty funny, because now Pro mark came out with these plastic brushes that completely resemble fly swatters , in three different thicknesses.. Funny how all things come full circle ..

Who would've guessed? Thanks to the company or companies who came up with the retractable flyswatter idea. If they hadn't come up with that when they did, I wonder how much longer it would've taken for the brushes to come along. Hmm...

Now I'm wondering how modern plastic flyswatters would sound ...

1:41 I doubt (but would find it absolutely hilarious) if a drummer back in the early 1900s said "I can play some EARLY jazz with these things" :P

Good question Aaron Evans. If you watch Part 8 (Classic Big Band Drumming) and Part 9 (Gene Krupa) of this series, your question will be answered!
