I played all my levels of hockey on that rink, from squirt to college. It's wonderful to see the program and Neal Henderson get the recognition they deserve!!
I loved Ft. Dupont Ice Arena. Born and raised in NW DC. Played youth hockey at Wheaton HC & Montgomery HC from 1980 until Mid 80's then played for Capital Boys HC based at Ft Dupont as a pee-wee, bantam & midget. Moved West in 1992 for college and haven't been there since. Lots of fond Memories. My dad played there too. Was a guy named Kenny who worked there and my dad said he was the best skate sharpener he had ever seen. I'm glad to see it was taken over after the NPS was going to shut it down. Played in college. My kids play too. Still play hockey today, Lever 4 coach & official. I even billeted some years for NA3HL junior players. Hockey is LIFE!
I was born and raised in this area and used to go skating at fort Dupont ice skating rink this also where the capitals used to hold their practice when they plated at the capital center
In 2014 Russian Alex Ovechkin called the Ukrainian people fascists and said they deserve to be invaded. On the orders of his daddy Putin. When a reporter tried to call Ovechkin out the Washington Capitals threatened the reporter. Now you know what side the Capitals organization is on and it isn't America or the side of freedom. Alex Ovechkin should go play hockey in his own country.
Ovechkin called the situation "hard" because he has friends in both Russia and Ukraine. The 36-year-old added he wants "peace in the whole world" sooner rather than later. "Please, no more war," Ovechkin said. "It doesn't matter who is in the war - Russia, Ukraine, different countries - I think we live in a world, like, we have to live in peace and a great world." Also, he never said they deserved to be invaded, he just said that Ukraine was a fascist country. Hmmmmm maybe people's opinion's change over time and you can't judge one man about what he said eight years ago. But what the Capitals said to the reporter is inexcusable.
