such a cool history! i have some personal fond memories of the bowl since me and other family members went to Hollywood High and have all graduated at the bowl!
My family has had a long history with the Hollywood Bowl. My grandfather, Dr. Kurt Meyer Radon, worked with Allied Architects in the 1920s. He was also a talented violinist. My mother went to Hollywood Bowl concerts starting in the 20s. She recalled one fully-staged performance of Die Walkure, with the Valkyries, including Kirsten Flagstaff, on horseback, riding down the side aisles and onto the stage. We had many candle-lit suppers under the pine trees in the picnic area before we took our seats. I recall Barry Tuckwell, playing Mozart's Concerto # 4 for French Horn, which had been delightfully parodied by Michael Flanders and Donald Swann in "Ill Wind" ("I once had a whim and had to obey it, to buy a French Horn in second-hand shop..."). At least half the audience held their collective breaths, waiting for him to begin the rondo movement, to our great delight. I saw the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra playing the Prokofiev score as the Sergei Eisenstein's "Alexander Nevsky" was projected on a large screen. I saw Big Brother and the Holding Company, with Janis Joplin telling us that "they had just gotten back from Woodstock". The audience went wild. So many wonderful memories. I live in the East now, about 2 hours from Tanglewood, but there is nothing better than those Concerts Under The Stars. Bravo to you for your fine documentary.
@@merchmotel I have to add that my spellcheck goofed up- it was Kirsten Flagstad. Another item- My mother went out on dates with Werner Klemperer (Col. Klink on "Hogan's Heroes"), the son of Otto Klemperer, conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Werner was quite the heartthrob among the young women of the German-American community in Los Angeles.
Great Video Documentary! Beautiful Images! Your Edits, Presentation and Information is Superb!!! My favorite Shell is the Smooth Half Circle with the Reflecting Pool.
Ypur bideos are so well done. Not just technically and well researched but your love of art and architecture add do much. You should he very proud of your efforts.
congratulations on another amazing video! you’ve truly outdone yourself with this one. thank you for preserving our history. i love sharing little facts i’ve learned from your videos with people when in driving by.
I liked the Bowl best when it was just a (half) bowl. All the speaker installations and tubes and whatnot makes it look too 'busy'. I like the simplicity of the old bowl.
Great video! It would have been amazing if America could have continued to build in art deco akd Streamline Moderne instead of falling victim to modernism/internationalism/Brutalism...etc... the original clamshell style was great (the one with the paintings) but the one with the layers (the classic/iconic version) is clearly the vest... even though they have rebuilt it larger they really need to bring back the reflection pool/fountain, itbwas amazing!
