History of the Märzen -- Oktoberfest Beer
Märzens are one of my favorite beer styles, especially as the heat of the summer begins to cool off. But besides being the most popular beers at Oktoberfest they have a really rich history being a part of the lager revolution. So join Ryan on a trip through beer history to discover the origins and evolution of the Märzen.

Do not underestimate the great taste of hacker-pshorr Oktoberfest. I keep it on my kegerator year round. But to me beers of this style should be tried from a tap.

My favorite (here stateside) is the Spaten Oktoberfest. In Germany, it was the Hofbrau brand Oktoberfest. Now you have me in the mood to go get some on the way home from work. I am more than likely going to brew one up during my next brewday. Cheers, Ryan! \m/

I found this on Wikipedia "The earliest chemically confirmed barley beer to date was discovered at Godin Tepe in the central Zagros Mountains of Iran, where fragments of a jug, from between 5400 and 5000 years ago was found to be coated with beerstone, a by-product of the brewing process."

You do realize that Märzens are not really served at Oktoberfest. The vast majority of beer at Oktoberfest are Fest beers. They are a different style from Märzens. Fest beers are lighter in color and not as strong. That way guests at the festivals are able to consume more and not get as drunk so quickly.

"festbier" is such a new term in the beer world, there's not a lot of info out there on it! And in the USA our "Oktoberfest" styles are mostly based on the marzen style. I posted a video on it last year if you want a little more info on the distinction :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-40zD7KRhnA0.html

At Oktoberfest I believe Hacker-Pschorr still serve the Märzen style, the rest 5 brands all serve Festbier. My favorite would be Augustiner. Living in Bayern for the 3 years, the Hofbräu is not really a common choice by the local from what I have seen.
@GasGas71

Lots of good comments here, but everyone left out one of the great German breweries...Ayinger makes a great Fest-Marzen, as they have it labeled...I'm an admitted O'fest snob and highly recommend it!

You're drinking old, skunked Oktoberfest, then. I wouldn't touch any of the German ones we get here, because they've invariably suffered the same fate.

My gateway drug was Gordon Biersch. I had never had a Marzen and it was immediately my favorite beer. It's been years since I had one, and I don't think I can get them in San Diego anymore, but it introduced me to my hands-down favorite style of beer. I just got the Karl Struss version fron Costco, and it's really great. That's what I can say about Marzens. They're all really great. I don't think I've ever had a bad one.

My first lager ever brewed was a Marzen just brewed it in South Fl starting in August and the taste is really nice pre carbonation. We are letting sit through the month of September for a total of 4 weeks fermentation and 4 weeks conditioning and I think it will be really nice.

@garykrakow2383
@garykrakow2383 6 лет назад
completely wrong. Oktoberfest beer is NOT the same as Märzen. Out of the six breweries that are allowed to make Oktoberfest beer for the festival, only the beer from Hacker Pschorr has anything to do with with a Märzen beer. The other Octoberfest beer from other 5 breweries is like a strong export beer. No sweet malt taste.

Check out Real Craft Ales, where a Welsh guy reviews all sorts of beer in his kitchen. He's pretty good, though recently has started reviewing food from time to time. I don't think it's to pair the two, as people don't generally drink beer with biscuits/cookies.

I heard beer has been around for almost 9000 years? Was that a lie?
@BeerByTheNumbers
@BeerByTheNumbers 6 лет назад
No, not at all. I was focusing on a particular style of beer in this video, the Marzen, but beer as a beverage is much much older. 9000 years isn't out of the realm of possibility. Perhaps I should do a video on ancient beer. Cheers!

Why do you pronounce st as sht, like saying shtyle instead of style? Is that a regional pronunciation? I have lived in America for over a decade having never heard that in person-to-person real life conversation.
