History of the Most Broken Metas in Overwatch

We can't talk about hero pools without mentioning the week where they banned widow, cassidy, sombra, soldier, dva, and baptiste. That week was pharah week and it was hell

You forgot to mention that Double Shield only worked because of Bap's lamp picking up the slack while the barriers were down.

As a Sym player since OW beta, i think we are forgetting one of the few metas when Sym was considered viable. The Pantheon meta! Stacking og Torb's Armor, Og Brig Armor, AND Shield health from Sym 2.0's shield gen. Squishys suddenly werent as squishy as they were walking around with 500 health😭😭

Honorable mention: Sombra "support" meta. Back when she was released and gained ult charge from teammates who used her hacked healthpacks

You missed a meta. There was a short period (maybe a week or two long) that Bastion got buffed so much that he was practically unkillable. If he was Nanoed, he could survive D VA ultimate. I played a game on Dorado during this meta that went 12 rounds or so and lasted over an hour. Every round had a nearly invincible Bastion sitting on the payload for the entire match. I'm sure there is some footage of this time kicking around.

OW1 was wild wasteland with no roll lock, but it did lead to some actual interesting and fun strategies. My most memorable match from it was when it first came out and all of our team picked Mei. Once all of the other team respawned then they all came out as Mei. It was a giant CC fest but it was still fun asf

While not the most broken, the 5-man rez meta is probably the one I hate the most. It was so cheesy to waste enemy CDs and Ults then essentially pull up a phase-2 of the boss fight where the enemy team who "won" the team fight is now punished.

Never heard of hero pools before, that's wild lol. I feel like they must have just given up for them to decide that banning heros at random was the way to go

I am glad we plastic 5 people get recognized from time to time. Bronze is already too high elo for us to climb up there.

Honestly GOATS was not really the problem. The problem was how long it took for them to patch that meta. Originally it was legit fun, I personally know Rein players were having a field day. But then it got dull having to play the same characters over and over again, because the only way to counter GOATS was to play GOATS. There was actually a somewhat functioning anti-GOATS comp developed just before 2-2-2, but it didnt exist for long. I believe it was 1-4-1? I can't remember what was in it, though. I only played it a few times.

There was a meta in Beta that had 2 zen’s, 2 Winston’s, and 2 tracers. Zens orb never disappeared off of a target out of LOS, friendly or enemy. So it was “chase the purple balloon”

I think hog meta would've been a good addition, it lasted a couple months and was just hog being able to one shot anyone, he could kill a full health zarya in one shot

And double shield was the last time we seen Reinhardt being a good hero. For those who don't know, double shield had 2 version: poke or brawl. Poke will run Sigma and Orisa, while brawl will run Reinhardt and Orisa. DPS was hanzo bastion or reaper mei respectively.

Pharah mercy were an amazing counter for goats. The splash dmg would hit everyone because goats comp plays close. And pharah would get her ult in like 2 clips. Then the rest is history

Overwatch 1 was so depressing from 2019 to 2022 like it was just tragic

Quad tank was also a thing before goats. I think goats and quad tank were signs that stacking tank utility, especially damage mitigation was just too strong. Also shoutout to orisa hog and Winston zarya.

Never forget the “No hero limits” speed meta from early launch OW1 double Winston, double tracer, double Lucio.

I would maybe add the triple tank comp that dominated for a while, the Sombra EMP farm as well as the diverse dive comps (triple DPS Rogue style and the dive that was played during season 1 of OWL). Also maybe minor comps ? Like the flex support playing Roadhog during season 1 playoffs or the season 2 stage 4 meta with hogs going fishing and Meis trying to prevent them.

As someone to played in Masters when Brig was released, she was oppressive before even GOATS. If I remember correctly, she had a 60% WR across all ranks all the way to GM. Her ability to, as a support, shut down most flankers and be able to hold up against most DPS made DPS' just worse than her in most comps. She was more of a bruiser or drain character than a support, who could heal everyone around her and instantly disengage any enemy with her stun + flail hit.

i actually loved playing goats, it was so much better than double shield. it was either roll or get rolled so games were more exciting

I still think the top two worst meta still haunts me ranks like this #1 GOATS: because it killed dive. Any possibility of playing mobile dps flank heroes were killed. Which was major part of the game that made it different from any other fps games. 2nd was Mercy: I actually never hated 2 CP until you had to defend 2nd point with Mercy absolutely doing what seems like infinite Rez and making a lost fight a won game.

I remember the Hide ‘n’ Seek meta being called the Necromercy meta

I'm glad I missed most of this stuff and only played toward the end of ow 1 life even with double shield being a thing (I was bronze / silver at the time so double shield wasn't nearly as picked) but good times even then, I still miss dps doomfist though

Ana's ult giving you a speed boost is awesome. I wish that was still a thing. I didn't start playing OW1 towards the end though. I'm a Mercy main but the mass rez + Mercy hiding sounds tilting 😅

Honorable mention to grav dragon meta in s10, they had to literally change how damage boost interacts with characters lol

I’m surprised you didn’t go over the McCree meta in season 1 where he could out snipe Widows and basically had two of him on every team. And I disappointed I didn’t get to hear about the stun meta again with Orisa, Roadhog, Brig, Cassidy, Ana and I think Junkrat or Pharah, I can’t remember

I know they didn’t compare, but ramattra and Mauga metas were really funny, especially when they could fight for eternity

Blizzards team would rather cut a limb than cauterize the wound. Goats meta is a problem? Well, let's put role lock. Certain heroes are too powerful? Well, if you are lucky maybe they'll get banned this week. They don't fix the problem, they just cut pieces of the game away until the problem is gone. Seriously, the weekly bans, to this day I still don't understand how they thought it was a good idea to have heroes randomly banned instead of doing what every other game does and letting the players choose.

This game has no direction

Just a note, GOATs wasn't the first team to find out the triple support, triple tank meta but they popularized it. Also, you'll notice a pretty common theme here of broken supports enabling these metas. GOATs would not be possible without key supports, beyblade was only strong because of Ana and beyblade itself wasn't the problem as Ana was the real problem. The mercy one is obvious. Supports are the pillars of any team, you can't swap them out in the puzzle of your team as easily as tanks and DPS.

I think the worse metas are the ones that force you to plain certain heroes, putting GOATS at the top and Mauga at close second.

It wasn’t just 1 tank, 1 support, 2 dps that got banned. Are we forgetting the week where Mercy and Moira got banned. Or the week where like no supports got banned, but they banned like 4 dps and 2 tanks

Goats was fun but getting your teammates to play it in comp is almost impossible. But somehow my enemy team will be running goats all the time.
