History of the UNSPEAKABLES and Department of Mysteries - Harry Potter Explained

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we’re going to be unpacking one of the more mysterious aspects of Harry Potter- the department of mysteries. Honing in further, we’re going to be taking a look at the peculiar workers of this department- Ministry employees known as The Unspeakables. We’ll also be looking at, later in the video, all of the rooms / chambers that reside inside the Department of Mysteries.
The ministry of magic is the primary form of government in the magical world - at least in the UK. Like a muggle government, the ministry’s responsibilities are vast, as they are the primary body that attempts to sustain law and order in the magical world. Like any system of government, in an effort to cover as much ground as possible, the primary governmental body is systematically divided to focus on different sectors of the wizarding world.
These ‘sectors’ or ‘departments’ cover the more common areas like the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and the Department of Magical Transportation, but there are also OTHER departments reserved for less..obvious pursuits. Queue level 9 and the Department of Mysteries.
The department of mysteries is responsible for studying the mysteries of the wizarding world, mysteries associated with love, space, thought, time, death, and other things. Basically anything that is unknown. Anything pertaining to this department is highly confidential, and those who work in this department are referred to as ‘unspeakables’. The divisions of this department are broken up by area of study, and includes the following: The brain room, the hall of prophecy, the death chamber, the love chamber, the space chamber and the time room. These rooms are accessed via the ‘room of doors’ - a large circular room where everything is black.
What’s particularly curious or dare I say..Mysterious about the Department of Mysteries is that it actually preceded the existence of the Ministry itself. The Ministry was established in 1707 and the Department of Mysteries had activity as early as 1672. The name checks out.

One for the season: Gary Oldman's other most famous role was Dracula; was Sirius Black a vampire or at some point supposed to be a vampire but it was cut? The avada kedavra that hit Sirius seemed to have a more stun like effect than it did with others? Was this because he was originally supposed to be a vampire? Does avada kedavra kill vampires? Did avada kedavra kill Sirius or did falling into the veil kill him?

I like how Hogwarts Legacy has a character who is an elderly professor who was once an Unspeakable. Quests as well as dialogue options hint that she should be in her thirties at least, but something in her old profession aged her rapidly to her dismay. That would be correct, as I know where JKR obtained the idea. It was the Romans that would have either constructed it, or brought it to the outskirts of Londinium. The gates are called Plutonian Gates or Pluto's Gates; the Devil's Gate. Pluto is the god of the underworld and wealth to the Romans. As a bit of trivia, this is about the Peverells. JKR created that family from a real Norman man named William Peverel, spelled with one L. William was given over 150 manors across England by William the Conqueror, and was known as a castle builder. William built Peverel Castle, and under the castle is a cavern, which many call the Devil's Arse. The Gates were built, by the Romans, where poisonous gas was admitted by the earth. They would lead sacrifices to the gate, with a rope, and push them through, where the gas on the other side would kill the animal inside an enclosed space. Their claim was that it was the underworld, and that Death had killed the beast.

@@Ojamamon67 I understand it to be the complete opposite. Sirius didn’t technically get “unalived” he got pushed from the land of the living to the land of the dead, meaning he’s dead. One problem with the Fidelius Charm is when the Secret Keeper dies then everyone to whom the Secret Keeper revealed the secret, becomes multiple Secret Keepers watering down the security. @LeoH3L1
@LeoH3L1 Год назад
Presumably they would make reports to someone somewhere in the ministry, eg the minister of magic, otherwise there's not much point in them even existing as a department, they're just studying mysteries for the sake of it, and keeping what they've learned to themselves until the day they die, which would be rather pointless as a department of government. So the fidelius charm would be fine, as long as the ONLY person they tell is the current MoM, since if the unspeakable dies, then that doesn't dilute it, as the MoM is one person. But that still is rather pointless, what if they make a discovery that would be very beneficial for wizarding society to know about? You couldn't implement it.
@GamesCooky
@GamesCooky Год назад
I was going to say. It would be much easier to just make sure new employees take the Unbreakable Vow upon employment. They could essentially just use it as a non-disclosure agreement. Just make them swear to never disclose any information tied to the department of mysteries.
@jaccokoet3888
@jaccokoet3888 Год назад
@@GamesCooky but they could still give the information up, they would just die. But if one of them got convinced by someone to die for a cause, they could leak info. And the person who heard it could just tell everyone, because they didn’t make an umbrellabird vow. So the only thing it would take to compromise the security is 1 employee who is willing to die for a cause
@GamesCooky
@GamesCooky Год назад
@@jaccokoet3888 Fair point.The ministry does have ways of detecting magic usage by underage wizards. So surely they must have some way of tracking when important information has been leaked, similar to how they track unlawful magic usage. Idk. It's magic. The sky is the limit as to what is possible. I'm sure there is some explanation.

That's why there's far more security around the Prophecies, as they're only a problem when people who they're relevant to make contact with them. Though they know enough not to bother intervening when someone is determined enough to find a Prophecy about themselves, as chances are they either already know it or they are destined to find out. In the case of Harry's prophecy, Trelawny doesn't know/remember ever giving it. That leads me to believe that a witness to the prophecy in its entirety (Dumbledore) may have to pull their memory (similar to using a pensieve) in order to have it recorded onto the crystal ball!
@MikeDCWeld
@MikeDCWeld Год назад
@@asthenolith that is a solid possibility. Although that isn't necessarily the right explanation for Trelawney not remembering giving the prophecy. After all, she did give a prophecy to Harry during his final exam about Voldemort's servant escaping and she had no clue anything had even happened. It's likely that her Seer gift simply manifests outside of her conscious state so her brain is literally unable to form an accessible memory of the event. As to the prophecy being recorded in the sphere, I wouldn't be surprised if there was some sort of ancient magic at work in the Hall of Prophecy that automatically created a sphere when a prophecy is delivered.

Even though it would be very logical to further secure the department with Fidelius Charm or Unbreakable Vows, this would limit the protagonists' access to it, hence us readers wouldn't know about it. Which makes me wonder: Could there be *other* departments, rooms or people that are kept secret in such a way? Also the lack of security in such a department turned out pretty convenient for Rowling, since it allowed her to put all the Time Turners in one room and destroy them, making her job way easier down the line. lol

I like to imagine tens and hundreds of top secret dept of mysteries facilities across the country, with the department pretty much administratively detached from the ministry and instead working hand-in-hand with equivalent organizations across the globe... you really need a HUGE amount of resources for research and security to be able to study these ungodly powerful magical things. The ability to time travel, if misused, can lead to catastrophes regarding reality itself; and sacrificial love was the key component of a protective charm that nullify ANY harm taken by hundreds of students in the final Hogwarts battle. No world ruler, tyrants, magical terrorists, in their right mind would hesitate to weaponize these magics. Being tied down to the ministry won't do any good in protecting the knowledge the dept of mysteries gained over the years.

One unspeakable goess rogue, and suddenly, whatever secrets they had are in the hands of your enemies. Tbh its the silliest spell in the entire series, it would be more effective to just hide and tell no-one where you were, cant give up information you dont have. I'd suggest the unbreakable oath as a far better method of keeping state secrets, especially as you could simply have a catch all oath for all information.

As for why the prophecies are kept hidden, even from the ones about whom the prophecy is made, I believe this is to prevent self-fulfilling prophecies. Goblins, veelas, giants, and humans can all interbreed with wizards. Does that mean they're all subspecies of one family? Similar to horses, donkeys, and zebras being able to interbreed.

Some food for thought: Do you think the Unspeakables are also trying to unravel the mystery of travelling to other universes? Do you think some Seers have worked as Unspeakables since the Department of Mysteries safeguards recorded prophecies?

I've always wondered, does the Ministry of Magic call itself a "Ministry" in order to intentionally set itself under the government of Britain in a legal sense? We know that the Minister of Magic does talk to the Prime Minister of the UK, and in the UK a "Minister" is a member of Cabinet (the main government). Ministries are headed by either a Minister or a Secretary of State (a term for a senior minister). Obviously the Ministry of Magic acts more like an independent government, with its own legislature and justiciary, its own currency and population. But it occupies the same territory as the UK. So when the Wizarding World decided to go secret, did they choose the term "Ministry" in order to placate the UK and its King? And if so, then there HAS to be an Act of Parliament of the Muggle UK somewhere hidden that devolves power to the Ministry of Magic and authorises it to make secondary legislation, mint currency etc. Because Governments only feel safe when there is law in place that authorises things they want to pretend they control. A side effect of this would be that all laws passed by the Ministry of Magic would in effect all be amendments to the original Act of the Muggle Parliament. All basically just one law in a legal sense. The same as when a local town council passes a bylaw under its authority granted by an Act. Like, for example, the Law against Misuse of Muggle Artefacts would actually have a long title like "An instrument amending the Secret Grant of Ministry (Magic) Act 1606" or whatever. Maybe being legally subservient to the muggle government was part of the compromise for the government ending its persecution of witches and wizards. Who knows

An interesting idea is the history and current state of religious beliefs in the wizarding world. They of course celebrate Christmas - what is that in the wizarding world. Other celebrated events?
@mojowwwav4357
@mojowwwav4357 Год назад
I imagine that for obvious controversial reasons JK didn't touch religion on purpose. But I like to believe that perhaps jesus was a wizard and that explained all the miracles he performed, and since this was before the whole secrecy thing, the miracles just spread like wildfire.

Re the prophecy room. I would wonder if the prophecy room was created before or after the time room. Because if you know the future would you change your fate? Some of the ultimate paradoxes can result from either knowing your fate or trying to avoid your fate. Harry Potter probably learned of his fate at exactly the right time. Furthermore; it would probably be inevitable that another seer would have foreseen that too. Given the significance of the information included there. The real question is what decides whether or not particular prediction needs to be sealed in the prophecy room or not?

I do wonder if, as a consequence of Riddle being born under the love potion, that was the reason he seemed incapable of actual love. His mother messed around with a force she shouldn't have, and it had long-term and far-reaching effects. Just a thought though.

I hope Hogwarts legacy is multiple games and eventually you graduate and get to pick from certain jobs. Where the main quest is the same for everyone no matter what your career is and a few side quests are accessible as well but you also have your career themed quest lines which tie into the main quest. And aside from being an auror which is something I really hope we get to play as at some point regardless but I’d also like to play as an unspeakable.

I've always wondered what would happen if some smart muggle scientists ended up in the ministry. Who would end up amazed? The muggles or the wizards. Cause their gonna be learning how the brain functions and the possibly origins of the universe and it's size. While the muggles are gonna be learning that there's an entire world of magic they didn't know about.

There doesn't seem much point in them if they can't tell anyone about their work, eventually you would want to tell the public since you'd want any benefits for society to be known, sure keep the dangerous discoveries secret, but what's the point of keeping the beneficial safe discoveries secret just for the sake of it, eg medical discoveries.

I think why they did not use the charm fo hide the secret. Is that when the secret keeper dies everyone who knows about it becomes the keeper. It’s more safe to just force everyone to vow to not tell anyone what they do then to risk it tue charm
