The History of Tyler State Park, George and Stella Styler Estate, and the Neshaminy Farms. Learn about the Underground Railroad, the Doan Gang connection, and more.
Edit: One major factual error in the video is that the park is actually 1,711 acres, not 17,000.
The bulk of the research used for this video was taken from an amazing book published by Brian Rounsavill on behalf of The Newtown Historic Association (NHA) - "The History of Tyler State Park / A Self-Guided Walking Tour." The book can be purchased here: www.newtownhistoric.org/visit...
Special Thanks to Bucks County Community College Foundation and Andrew States, and Tyler State Park Manager - Phillip Schmidt.

I graduated from Council Rock, and I was on hand for the grand opening of BCCC. I recall a picnic at the Indian Council Rock house. I recognized so many names of the 18th and 19th century farmers and knew many of their descendants in Newtown and Richboro. I ran many miles on the Tyler Estate, and it's great to see it again! Next time I'm in town I'll walk the estate!

took my kids canoeing many times at Tyler. All I ever saw of the park was what I could see from the water. Thanks for sharing.

Wow this brought back memories. First visited Tyler in the 80s on a CYO trip, day of canoeing and horseback riding. A decade later, I moved to Newtown (there for 10 years). Lived close enough to Tyler that I could bike there daily. I could practically ride those trails blindfolded, I knew every hill and curve. Good times. Thanks for a (beautifully done) enlightening video and allowing me to reminisce.

Wonderful video! I grew up across from Tyler Park and still enjoy walking and hiking there. It’s such a shame many of the homes are vacant and in need of repair.

I have hiked almost every inch of this park and still do at least 2x a week. It's a fantastic place and there are plans to continue the preservation of the park by the State of Pennsylvania and Bucks County.

I remember back in the day just before it became a state park (can't remember when) we would go fishing near the creek dam. We used to have to dodge the cops, but it was all no big deal, as everybody knew what was going on at the time. Also I remember riding our bikes up a long road in a cornfield to an old house somewhere on the property. Now, I'm sure, everything must be totally different in 2024.

I had no idea the expanse of the park and how many farms. I wonder how Tyler was able to convince them all to sell to him.
@buckscountyplaces

It took him 10 years to acquire all of the farms. It appears that the offers he handed out were more than generous.

The first fact is wrong. It's 1,711 acres, not 17,000.

If you ever need a voice over artist for your next video please let me know. I’m professionally trained and I used to live in Newtown. It would be my pleasure to do it for you.
