I like how they eliminated the need for a magazine cut-off by eliminating the magazine altogether.

How do you eliminate what you never previously had? The Chassepot was single shot too. As were pretty much all contemporary main army rifles. It's roughly the Civil War Era after all and repeaters were exotic even where they were readily available. magazines for that sort of rifle would not appear before 10-20 years later, the Mauser 1871 Othais mentioned in this video did not get a tubular magazine until 1884.

In 1941 in the Battle of Crete, on 3/23 Kampfsgruppe Schätte while advancing towards the Cretan town of Kastelli, encountered obstinate and mass resistance and received dense fire from well dug positions manned by elements of a Greek infantry regiment and armed civilians. Most of them were armed with the Gras Modèle 1866/74 11mm rifle, and each fighter carried less than thirty rounds of ammo as they're unable to be resupplied by the British who had no stocks in such antique calibre. I think this must have been the last time the Gras saw action in a major conflict. The Gras carrying Greeks of the 1st Infantry Regiment held the area of Kastelli for a whole day. The taking of Kastelli by the Germans on 3/24 marks the removing of the last obstacle to unimpeded landing at Maleme airstrip for them.

The Gras has a special place in my heart-it was a common sight in Ethiopia during both Italian invasions, and it was one of the most popular rifles, especially among non-regular army soldiers (although with a lot of the regular army being given French surplus, maybe a few made it there too). Also that bolt is beautiful.

As an additional item of curiosity, I used to own a Gras that had been converted to what I assumed was a shotgun. The barrel was a very large thin rimmed bore with no rifling which was very heavily pitted. The bolt's firing pin had been shortened and what looked like the end of a thick nail inserted in the bolt head which had been drilled out for the thicker pin. both the cartridge ejector screw and the bolt retaining screw were missing and the stock had been damaged and nailed together. I obviously never tried to fire the thing because I reckoned it would have been more dangerous for the firer that any target. Anyhow, thanks for the interesting history or the weapons.

A lot of these rifles were sporterized and rechambered to take shotgun cartridges in the early 1900s. I have one such sporterized Gras in 16ga, which is still used to this day to hunt rabbits.

The muzzle end bit was new to me and very interesting. Unfortunately, a point was left untouched, and that was the trouble they had adapting Lebel barrels (no separate production line was set up for these conversions, they took off-the-shelf barrels) into this large receiver. For this you'll have to take off the handguard and take a look at the limit of the receiver.

You guys are awesome! Very good video. I just bought a Gras 1866/1874/80 Gendarmerie Carbine. It's a very nice rifle, has all matching numbers and is in great condition. It's life started as an 1866 Chassepot, which is quite cool. The barrel date is S.1886 N, meaning it's a very late Chassepot to Gras conversion.

I really enjoyed this video. At a gun show last weekend I picked up one without any of the modifications. It's in excellent condition including the bluing that has taken on a beautiful patina. I look forward to getting the necessary equipment to load for it. I'm a big fan of large slow moving bullets and this 11x59r round is going to be fun. On that note, May sure looks like she's getting a huge endorphin boost every time she squeezes the trigger. Love that little smile that creases her face with every round fired. Don't ever let her go.

I'll admit I'm not a historian. I am up in Quebec and these rifles also had a an other life in the colonies. This province has always had a strong connection to France andI've seen these that were converted to twelve guage which was probably the last way to keep this rifle useful. Awesome video.

@eVVigilance
@eVVigilance 7 лет назад
Yes! Finally! Othais, excellent overall. a few things to pick at: Chassepot cartridges aren't combustible, or totally so. The silk wrap is supposed to act almost as a bag to keep fouling together, and the shape of the bolt head ensures 99% of what is left is blown out the muzzle. The modern shortcut is to coat the paper case in flame retardant, and believe me it works. Nothing left inside. Untreated cases will leave chunks and primers behind. I haven't tried silk yet. The updated reciever shape of the Gras actually started with the Chassepot. My January 1872 accepted Chassepot has a "Gras style" receiver, while my 1869 mfg 1866-74 has the early profile. The difference is a squarer tang and added shoulders to increase stock contact. Your extraction issues with the 11x59 are due to ammunition. I am betting you used brass from .348 Win, which is undersized at the rim. All in all though, excellent. I would be interested in hearing what you used for powder. I find 1.5f Swiss to deliver much better results than other powders.

They went to all the effort of converting this to 8mm so they wouldn't have to keep making 11×59mmR ammunition then they produced loads of 11×59mmR ammunition for "balloon busting" role. They used 11x59mm so much that they made an 11mm machine gun. The 11mm ammunition was also produced (in blank variants) for various mortars and grenade launchers. Though I suppose that's quite a different supply chain from "you're a soldier, so you get standard infantry soldier ammunition which is this 8mm rifle ammunition" while the 11mm for anti-aircraft and artillery is a different supply chain.

I din't even knew the Gras served in WWI and frankly, that's amazing for the French side to be able to pull out a rifle that's used almost 50 years before and still stuck it into service. That's frankly amazing.
@Candrsenal
@Candrsenal 7 лет назад
I agree, honestly fascinating.
@canicheenrage
@canicheenrage 7 лет назад
Well, you can look even further than that, as there was at least one occurence in ww1 where they literaly used rocks.
@MrLolx2u
@MrLolx2u 7 лет назад
canicheenrage Rocks is nothing. When war time comes, even a wooden plank can clobber someone to death and I'm not amazed that rocks can kill people. Heck that even happened in Iraqi Freedom but for a firearm? That's a whole lot of different story, especially one that fires black powder only to have it been "converted" to fire smokeless cartridges. Due to the look of the Gras, it never even needed a huge bolt rearrangement but just stuck a new barrel and do slight bore arrangement and it's set and frankly, that's amazing for a gun so solid.
@canicheenrage
@canicheenrage 7 лет назад
An entire infantry company, out of ammunition, managing to repel an enemy attack supported by artillery by throwing rocks, "nothing". You seem to have pretty high standards.
@MrLolx2u
@MrLolx2u 7 лет назад
canicheenrage What is surprising about rocks? I have read about an entire battalion of troops being surrounded in Gallipoli and having ran out of water, food, medical supplies and even ammo, took everything they had from rocks, planks, rifle butts, knives and some even went in with fists and fought the Germans and they totally got destroyed so fighting with rocks in WWI is pretty common as you would have thought. In fact it happened in the Asonzo often enough when the Italians ran out of ammo. However, that's not the point. We're not talking about taking a knife to a gunfight. What we're talking how they could pull a gun that's not used for 50 over years and still stuck it into service, nothing to do with what they fought with in the field. If you want to talk about rock slinging on the battlefield, go to Indy's channel. This is the wrong place for you.

just a thought: all war parties used armour plates which they installed at observation posts that could be reached by small arms fire. As far as I know, german snipers used large calibre hunting guns to hit enemy observers crouching behind those plates. Maybe the french were looking for some weapon to do the same work. I don't know how strong the locking system is, but the single shot configuration wouldn't be much of an issue for that kind of task and the stock seems to be solid enough. one would probably just need a heavier barrel and - well - sights. what do you think?

No, the breech is too weak for regular 8mm let alone anything hot loaded.

Found information on the number of rifles bought by Chile during the 1879 War of the Pacific and their price, it may be of interest: Comblain II 18.206 rifles at £ 3,51 each Gras 22.808 rifles at £ 2,48 each Beaumont 9.964 rifles at £ 1,72 each Kropatschek 1.952 rifles at £ 3,40 each Winchester 4.868 carbines at £ 3.58 each These are war contraband prices of course.

Funny how 40 year old technology was considered long obsolete in 1914 while today, we are still using 60+ year old technology. :) Another great episode. I learn so much about all these old firearms. I also tend to want to spend a lot of money too though! Hehehe...

Well it is understandable, not many people know about that conflict and the weapons used in it, information about it is scarce online even in spanish. Other guns used during that war, that I know of, were the Mannlicher and some winchester models, but the Gras was the most widely used firearm. Btw I love your channel, probably my favorite gun channel, so informative, keep up with the good work.

Great video and interesting guns. I can't imagine picking up my entire collection and moving it on short notice, that must have been a pain! I do have one question because you've obviously researched this more than I have - my understanding was that the Tabatiere was produced after the Chassepot was adopted to make some use out of their stocks of muzzleloaders, and actually saw the majority of production around the Franco-Prussian War. To be fair, this comes from the internet and not books, is it wrong?
@Candrsenal
@Candrsenal 7 лет назад
The book listed placed it as the precursor but it had no focus on the Tabatiere specifically. I can double check elsewhere.

Is 8mm lebel that weak or is the bolt on this gun that strong? Able to handle smokeless powder with it only locking on the bolt itself sounds crazy. I would be scared to shoot if i didn’t know it’s history to understand it still worked

I know, I'm answering to a 8 month old comment, but anyway.... I would like to see that too, because I realy can't see how it would work. There's just no way you can get a cartridge into that chamber any other way then by hand. The only thing I can think of would by a new design, using a striker instead of a hammer, rotating the whole breach action 180° and fitting some realy weird and awkward tube magazine in the butt stock feeding through a holowed-out grip, as well as some awkward back-and-sideways ejection port...
