History PhD Summer Week in my Life: Archiving in Australia
Hello friends! If you are new here, my name is Katherine and I am a third year PhD candidate studying history at the Ohio State University! I am a social historian of war, and my area of focus is France + Australia during WWI.

As a Chilean, hearing that you're experiencing 32 degrees in july sounds like hell, because my brain preset mode is in °C, but then i realize that you mean °F and it makes much more sense hahah Also, i'm about to apply to phd programs in England and Germany this year (i have a masters from the usa) and would love a video on the process, from contacting professors as sponsors to what to write, what to expect in the process, funding, etc. BTW i'm a sociologist, so my pdh hunting process is focused on development, governance, public policy, etc. Hopefully you have a good rest of archiving process in Australia and find what you need for your dissertation!

Oh my goodness haha yes I should clarify Fahrenheit!! I don't know too much about other disciplines besides history, but I can definitely start working on a video for next month about this! Particularly as application season is getting rolling!

Hi, modern history student here in Canberra. I am currently studying at length records from the first world war. I must say ours are some of the best kept world wide (the British ones a mess). What you are looking for doesn't exist in the way you are looking. Soldiers would get back pay for missed payment and if they were deceased their next of kin would recieve the funds. But there isn't a specific separation allowance per say. Quite often the back payment recieved is down to separation date and there are some cases where this date is disputed and the individual can recieve additional funding based on time. I suggest looking at soldiers who were in Europe until well after the peace. Possibly those who were deployed in Russia during the intervention. Our troops largely were underpaid quite badly during the first two world wars and it was notoriously difficult for family to get blood from the stone that is the government. Edward Humphreys for example died in 1918 and it took until the 1920s for the family to get a photo of the grave.

Thanks for the extra information and the insight into the regional archives! I may be using a different term but the did in fact have separation allowances or allotments to dependents, and additional allotments for those with children. I have found the general government files related to this scheme, just not any correspondence! I will look into local archives for my next trip for sure though!!

Also if you are looking at specific units or localities, quite often they will have a much more in depth archive. For example, Maryborough in Queensland has a treasure trove of documents and letters for the region. They'll generally share free of charge
