I can tell you, too, from flint knapping for years, obsidian when it breaks like that, rarely ever breaks cleanly. There's always little bits and flakes that can snap off afterwards, so if that obsidian fractures into the wound, every time you move that affected muscle, you're going to have obsidian shards cutting fresh tears in the muscle fibres. And that stuff is sharp enough to go deep into skin and muscle without a lot of force.

Obsidian can be flaked off into ultra sharp shards, to be hit with this fast, would completely cut through all the layers of skin and the elasticity in your skin would cause the wounds to open up as far as they possibly can. Hi, Meso-American historian (I am currently an undergraduate in anthropology focusing in pre-Colombian America) here, like 80% of what is said here is just not true. I really wish they brought a historian on here, there's so much off. Just a few things: It was not used to wound to bring people back to "sacrifice". In war you are looking to kill. It would be used after a thrown spear. It would be used one handed more often, with a shield in the other hand. Seriously shields cover like 90% of the art. The man swinging it is also swinging it like a baseball bat. You would be trained to swing down from the shoulder near the neck to the chest. Lastly, whenever you see a "t" and an "l" together, pronounce it like a "ch" but blow air through your cheeks with your teeth closed.

Even then, the chances of dying to it was still pretty high. It took skill to kill with this weapon, but it took more skill to bring a person alive after a fight. The goal is to bring/capture enemies, which in their eyes was their form of attaining glory and prestige, not by killing. It was preferred to bring them alive instead of dead. Said prisoner is to be sacrificed, which is the reason for taking hostages.

@@EmilioReyes_97 Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but just because there aren't any records doesn't mean we can't easily assume some things about the body mechanics involved. The Aztecs were smart. They definitely would have tried hard to learn to use these things in the most effective way possible. It looks like there may be some debate as to whether or not this weapon was two-handed. I'd say if they used any kind of shield then it's unlikely these would NOT have been two handed. Assuming that it was two-handed, though, there are some techniques for cutting with two-handed weapons that span across multiple cultures. The biggest one that seems to be absent in this video is the use of body mechanics an the energy you can make use of from them. This guy's first cut is really awkward. He is holding it high above the left side of his body to get lots of energy behind it, which is fine. He has his right foot forward which is fine when you have the weapon on your left when starting a strike. The problem is he just steps forward with the right foot. You can see how the body mechanics of his cut make his torso "want" to twist a bit and follow through, but because he didn't have his feet right, his hips are constrained from twisting anymore in the desired direction. I can't site you a huge litany of cultures and texts, but for sure at last in kenjutsu and European long sword techniques that are documented, there is this idea that you should pivot in the direction of the strike. Here's a better way to do this guy's first cut, for example: Start with the weapon up above your left shoulder and back a bit. Point the right foot at the target. As you start to deliver the cut, use your hands and arms to focus more on edge alignment than strength. Allow your body to twist into the cut and allow the weapon to "pull" you through as you bring your back foot (left foot) around. Strike the target just before your left foot hits the ground. Once the foot hits the ground, a good deal of the energy you had from the pivoting is gone, but if you strike just before your foot hits, a good deal of that energy gets transferred into the target.

neko.P swizzle okay so this type of war they practiced was only with one other group of people in central Mexico. There was a triple alliance in which the Aztecs and two other neighboring tribes formed. This was to fight the Tlaxcalans in the east. Which is now modern day Puebla. They had an empire rivaling the Aztecs, so they had an agreement of taking minimal troops into battle to see who can take the most for their god. The other type of war the Aztecs used was conquest. This is known since they had contacts with northern nomadic tribes, and evidence of maya and Aztec interaction.

They used it wrong on this but it's okay we can only guess what the Aztec fighting system was like. But just Buy looking at pictures and listening to Spanish testimonies of the way they used this weapon we can see kinda how they used it. One main thing that caught my attention was that the maquiatle had a hole at the end of the handle and it was used for a laniard so we can see by this that it was used similar to how we use machetes today so in other words they would use a flicking motion to strike the victim this would minimize the risk of hurting your weapon and maximize your chances of being able to strike again. in other words they would go for several chops rather then just one. It was a chopper type weapon. Also it is important to note that a lot of these natives replaced the maquiatle with a machete after time went By this shows how similar the functions of the two were to them.

see the thing is, this weapon was designed to break off those shards into the person. after those glass shards are stuck inside the person, they will continue to cut whenever the person moves, causing more and more damage. also, obsidian was EVERYWHERE back then. it was easy for them to replace these blades, even on the battlefield. this is not a chopping weapon, it's a slasher. you're meant to slash at the person, then drag the blade through instead of pulling it out to maximize damage. it's also worth noting that this isn't the only weapon the jaguar carried into battle, they had plenty of other weapons to fall back on if they did run out of obsidian on their blades, they aren't foolish enough to only take 1 weapon into a fight, no one is.

The maquahuitl used by the Mexica jaguar and eagle warriors was reported to have been capable of disemboweling and beheading horses with a single swing. The blades had to be chipped off an obsidian rock at very particular angles to surpass steel, in terms of sharpness. It should also be acknowledged to take the density of the wood into consideration, but I saw no mention of this.

It was only after a few months have passed after the European contact where the Mexicas were devastated by the viruses (it's stimated that 1/3 of the population had die an a lot of the remaining were sick) brought by them that the Spanish (even tho only 1% of the army was Spanish) were able to win

you gotta remember that before the spainish came, steel didn't really exist in the americas. so all they were dealing with was soft fleshy targets with the occasional leather or padded armor. and to fight those, obsidian is probably one of the best blades you could make. Obsidian can be sharper and more precise than surgical steel, the stuff we use in scalpels. the only reason we don't use it in medicine is cuz it can break off and cause issues. which is a selling point of this weapon. he just used it very very wrong
