It’s always been popular where I’m from. Maine is a cold ass state with a small economy so gas is not always affordable here for heating homes. It is interesting to see that trend increase. Hopefully this is the beginning of a shift away from oil and gas.

@@assamass Average salary only indicates total amount of money earned by all people on average, not the amount that people earn individualy. On its own it doesn't adequately represent the situation. In reality if you don't have highest education you probably won't find any job where salary is above 650 euro. And even doctors and teachers who earn a lot of money in other EU countries, only get around 750 euro in Latvia. Not to mention pension for senior citizens in Latvia is 380-400 for most people, and disabled people only get up to 200 euro. I just gave you few examples of massive groups of people that don't earn no where near 1000 euro a month. And yes I know pension is not salary, but it serves the same purpose - keeping people alive. My point is that it is better to look at how much people earn in different age groups, education levels and field of work. It will paint way more accurate picture.

Yes but you have money unlike your neighbors bellow you. In Latvia I earn 500 euro month for full time job, and it costs 350 euro to survive (only food and bills) in summer. In winter surviving cost jumps up to 450-500 euro before current gas situation. Yes it is a lot warmer in Latvia, but the issue is not that EU will have no gas. The issue is the price we will have to pay keep ourselves alive.

@@neko_my_cat I'm with you and there are many people who are intensely burdened by the current economical situation. IMO how wages developed during the last few decades is an absolute farce, since these were always increased below the rate of inflation in most of Europe, leading to an effective YOY loss(!) in spending power. (i.e. before the 90s, one household income could buy a house without taking a loan; nowadays, two such incomes plus a loan are barely enough anymore or just completely out of reach in many people's circumstances of living) Add an acute crisis to that, and you get the current situation, which not only worsened the problem, but also revealed the cumulative effects of things declining for a good while now. Possible reasons for this would be political failure/misgovernment, and new systemic issues being created, while worsening existing ones due to deregulation, lobbying and unfavorable changes in rules and laws. Some of those changes were directly against the interests of the average working class person and involve reducing their protection against exploitation and cutting down the welfare state, which was supposed to provide a security net and avoid existential dread by not letting the living conditions drop below a certain threshold, aswell as make sure that financial issues don't dictate one's life if he's already living in comparatively humble conditions. Most social and societal achievements of the last century were fought for very hard and a lot of people had to be mobilized and motivated to stand up for that cause. I highly recommend organizing regular, peaceful demonstrations and even creating a citizens' movement in order to create political pressure. Getting more people to join the workers' unions would be helpful aswell. What could also be interesting, is looking into the core goals and their reasoning in the philosophy behind socialism or social democracy, because those are what inspired the aforementioned (and now unfortunately gutted) achievements in the first place. People saying things like "but then it will be like in Venezuela, the Sovjet Union or China and you won't be allowed to own anything" don't have a clue and bring up such false deadbeat arguments in order to prevent any serious amount of thinking or discussion coming up regarding this topic. I.e. socialism doesn't actually demand a centralist autoritarian/dictatorship government, nor a planned economy. Having the workers own the means of production in equal shares (democratic workplace structure! no more ridiculously big wages for only the company leadership, more for everyone else), aswell as making sure that the state provides all basic necessities (food, water, medical care, education, housing) for those who otherwise wouldn't have access to them are the most important core goals. Not only does it acknowledge many of the structural issues we're being subjected to, but it also proposes solutions by adressing their causes in a calculated way - those things are something that happens only seldomly, if at all in modern politics anymore, but need to return… Sorry for that wall of text, I needed to rant a bit lol.

The electricity market in Europe is so messed up. We produce not enough so we import driving prices up meanwhile we still operate gigantic coal powerplants because Nuclear Energy is "scary" and it will take until 2100 for us to actually build one. On top of that EVERYTHING is in the hands of private companies to they are in it for profit.

Germany previously relied on a mixture of coal and nuclear to supply base load energy. Decisions were made to transition the German grid away from nuclear towards LNG over a number of years by politicians who ended up working for or on the pay-roll of Russian Gas companies. I watch with glee as the German establishment try to pretend they haven't been taking dirty Russian gas money on the downlow for decades now.

Absolutely, the silence of the German government speaks volumes. And the pressure from the public to open NS 2 magically disappeared.

The thing is. The coldest part of European winters has consistently been pushed further back in the season. Having other comparably warm decembers, but then snapping into true cold weather in january and february.

@@RK-cj4octhis is an issue didn't happen here for the last couple years, you can consider today is november, but temperature here is still 27 degree c, one of the reason is underwater volcanic activities near taiwan and japan kind of "cooking" the sea, float stones already trouble fishing fleets here and neighbor countries for few years.
