Sometimes small corners of the map can have outsized effects on the surrounding world. Hong Kong is undoubtedly one of History's greatest examples of big things coming from small beginnings. If you're curious about Hong Kong's current political situation, there's no better place to start than at the beginning.

@@hermanlai6035 A quick explanation: seeing as mainland china has this almost knee-jerk reaction to anything that even resembles criticism against the Communist Party, anyone stuck in there needed ways to talk about Xi Jinping that wouldn't immediately raise alarm bells. There was a photo of Xi and Obama walking during political talks, it got compared to a picture of Pooh and Tigger walking with nearly the same positioning... And that's the story of how Winnie the Pooh became censored in Mainland China. Because apparently Emperor Xi cannot tolerate even juxtaposition.

Macanese here, I think the reason for that is because unless you’re into gambling (or investment of that)or history, or maybe you’re from Portugal or in the region, the tiny tiny city isn’t all that well known around world. When I told people I come from Macau, the most likely respond is “I haven’t heard of it or where is that”. Furthermore locals here don’t even care about its history, and most documents are either in Portuguese where most of the local don’t understand or in Chinese where others people don’t understand, not to mention those documents are hard to find online too.

The Chinese government can and does commandeer property and assets at will. Lack of regulation does not make a system MORE capitalist. What is more, Communism isn't JUST Socialism. It's the politicisation of human life. Every aspect of life in China belongs to the state, and is essentially on lease to the population with the government free to retract access to it at any time for any reason. Speech? Money? Property? Socialisation? Transportation? Healthcare? Freedom? None of these things belong to the Chinese individual, they all belong to the Chinese state, headed by The Party, which means everything in China belongs to a handful of totalitarian ideological oligarchs. To say an entire generation identified as Japanese is an overstatement. Not all Taiwanese people were Lee Deng Hui lol. I think it surprises many people to know just how much influence China's had on the west that their governments will never admit to. Even growing up I wasn't allowed to know that tea wasn't from Britain until it became a little too obvious that tea was only able to be imported to the country from China "of all places" and for some reason Britain needed to war with that country just to secure those tea imports. But even then I was taught that "black" tea was somehow some kind of evolution of the type of teas that the orientals drank.

Singapore would be an interesting topic because it's also (effectively), a one party city state where political dissenters are destroyed. Historian here, thoroughly rejecting the so-called 20 year rule. I wrote my senior thesis on Vladimir Putin. You just gotta go with the most supported facts, and include the contesting opinions. As history becomes increasingly studied, it'll become hard to find subjects that nobody has already done to death. Plus, I would argue that in this Digital Age, history moves more quickly.

This may be apocryphal but one of my favourite stories of symbolism is about the opium war and dragons. During the war, a brand new iron-clad steam powered British war ship, clashed with several Chinese ships and won handily. The symbolism involved is the flags. The British ship flew the St George's cross (as well as the Union Jack). Whereas, the Chinese ships flew under the banner of a dragon. For those unfamiliar with St George, he's famous for allegedly slaying a dragon.

I don’t think you know what 50 cent army means. For example, people keep calling me 50 cent when I simply find places where most people lean toward one side and I go in to support the other. No, 50 cent army is people who are paid to create multiple accounts and reply to posts or videos in favour of their employee. A couple years back the going rate was 0.5yuan/comment. Hence the name. They aren’t always political either. When it was first exposed, they were mainly doing promotional works for products. As far as I’m aware, they still are. It’s just that westerners hear about people doing entrepreneurial work in China and decided to twist it toward secret police because they can’t imagine Chinese people being capitalist and explore into marketing strategy.
