I picked up an old Ford Model T spark gap generator at the Electronics Flea Market. It's built into a beautiful wooden lacquered box. It makes a pretty antique display piece. I paid something like $20 in 2014.
These originally ran on 6 volts. In this case I'm running it on 12. On the left side out of view there is an electrical switch contact connecting the input voltage to an internal coil. This builds up a magnetic field. The magnetism pulls the switch open causing the field to collapse. When this happens, a neighboring high-winding coil turns it into a much higher voltage. This repeats as fast as the switch can move, creating a continuous spark.
