I've found Gil Ash's teaching to be right on the money. I especially like how he has developed the thought processes dealing with the kinetics of target movement and how the brain processes the data that comes from watching the target in motion. It should be clear to most that if the eyes are not focused on the target, and a small piece of the target at that, the brain input and output will be focused somewhere other than on the target. The three tips he gives here are crucial to breaking targets: Good and consistent gun mount, consistent movement or swing and keeping your eye on the target behind (or to the side of) the barrel. There are a lot of really good instructors out there in RU-vid land such as Gil, Don Currie, Ben Husthwaite and many others. Listen to them and try on what they teach. Everything will not necessarily work for you, but if you don't try it, how do you know it won't or will work. Like my old Mamma used to say, "Learn from other's mistakes. You don't have time to make them all yourself." Good shooting.

Having a good recoil pad on the gun helps as well. Before I got the recoil eraser, I never really liked shooting a 12 gauge very much. But now I like shooting it so much over my 20 gauge it’s my preferred firearm of choice for upland bird hunting and sporting clays. If you have a gun you can’t even shoot comfortably you will more than likely miss a lot of your targets.

Thanks for this. Going to trap shooting today. Will try this technique. My mistake was not hitting the next point, I kept trying to hit where the bird was.

Can someone help me out here. Is shotgun stock shims for drop pointless? Should I be focusing on muscle memory and the target as opposed to my pattern and point of aim?

I am a pretty good shot but have been able to shoot the target faster I would guess that that is because I have practiced enough to allow my brain to do that am I correct?

One thing I have noticed. All the videos I have watched, everyone is shooting double barrels. No one is using a pump or auto. Does anybody know why? Back in the late 70's I had a S&W 12 gauge pump with a 36" full choke. I never shot in organized matches. I have had my brother operate the thrower. I never knew what he was loading (singles, doubles or triples) or which way they were going till he pulled the cord.. 95% of the time I would shoot a box of shells and never miss a clay target. Back then I loved doubles and triples over singles.. That was 40? something years ago. I have just got back into shotgunning here lately. I don't remember a 12 gauge kicking that hard, but it does now. I'm thinking about going to a 20 or 28 gauge.

Go for an easy field like a beginner sporting field with easy slow or falling targets shoot with both your eyes open u wilm eventually get the feel of it when you break some clays and do lots of mounts at home.If you mount your gun out of 200 mounts 199 should be exactly the same

Do trap shooting has any relation with height which is common to see in other sports?

I personally have not been shooting skeet competitively that long(2-3 yrs) however I know that what he is saying is correct. I also know if you're someone who consistently shoots 21 and above on a single round that the rest is mental and making sure that every shot you take has to be in the same spot mentally.(for me I struggled getting over 20 clays for a while, then I made minor adjustments and got to the 22-23 hump and from there it was the mental game I played and what got me over it was my preparation and mental ritual before every shot to get me shooting my first 25 straight. I'm not quite at the 50 or 75 or 100 straight but i'm close and minor mentality and physical adjustments will get me there and you all can/will/already have gotten there). Have a great day!

Noah Lowe since I’ve posted that comment, I’ve gone skeet shooting about 4-5 times with my 18.5” hole defense shotgun and it works, it’s better for the closer clays

Elijah Zola same, i recently got into it with my 18.5" shotty too. It works good, and skeet shooting is fun as hell
