Tips for Better Wing & Clay Shooting - Lead

Many shooters we encounter have trouble grasping the concept of lead needed to hit a moving target. There are different types of lead and they all have their place in wingshooting. Let’s go through the 3 main types of lead to help you get a better understanding of how you can establish lead with a shotgun.
Swing Through or Pull-Through
The shooter mounts with the gun behind the target, then accelerates the gun through the target, pulling the trigger when the right amount of lead is achieved.
Pull Ahead
The shooter mounts the gun on the target, then accelerates the gun forward of the target, pulling the trigger when the right amount of lead is achieved.
Sustained Lead
The shooter mounts the gun ahead of the target, matching the target speed, pulling the trigger when the right amount of lead is achieved.
One thing that is important no matter which type of lead that you choose is follow through. Follow through is the continuation of your swing after pulling the trigger. Follow through ensures you don’t stop the gun as you fire. If you do stop the gun as you fire it will reduce your lead and result in a miss behind the bird.
The other big question I know a lot of you have is, when do I know I have the right amount of lead? That is a great question. When you throw a ball to someone that is moving, how do you know where to throw it? Or when you are catching a ball how do you know exactly where your hands should be and when you should close them? There is really two answers, one, your eyes see and then your brain calculates the speed, distance, and direction of travel and then you hands and body respond to the data to move where they need to. We have that natural ability in us, but of course, just like any sport or activity; it needs to be practiced to increase the skill level.
We know that is can be very frustrating to get out and practice and keep missing targets without knowing where you are missing. There are a few great options to help with this. First, grab someone that is an experienced shooter to come with your. An experienced shooter should be able to help you see where you are missing. You can always hire a shotgun instructor or coach. A qualified instructor will cost you some money but will save you a lot of frustration. I also want to mention one other too. Winchester has developed the AA Traacker round that allows you to see where you are shooting. Instead of shooting round after round guessing and getting frustrated use the AA Traacker round.

I was shooting skeet one day at a local sporting club. I was missing behind behind behind over and over and it was definitely a problem for me in skeet shooting in general. An older guy in my group that was very experienced told me to intentionally miss the target in the front. He told me to lead ahead just to where I thought I’d miss ahead. I pulled ahead and kablammo that bird shattered. I then realized that I needed so much more lead than I had thought. This is a great way to learn how much you need to lead. Miss ahead and then back it off if you need to.

Same thing happened to me yesterday. Iv never shot skeet before. Only shot trap. I was shooting and missing behind every shot. He told me aim further ahead than i think and i finally hit it.

This is the best video on lead I have seen. Listen to this man if you are a novice shooter who doesn't understand lead. Lead is not a feet and inches proposition. Rather it is a yes/no proposition and when you reach yes your mind will pull the trigger with no conscious input from you.

AKA Wireguy it is a good video for people that don't shoot at all. But for an intermediate shooter that's shot a couple hundred clays it really didn't provide any useful info

You are right! You can't make a short video that is good for all levels of shooting. If you are an experienced shooter, know the types of leads and how they are achieved, this video won't be a big help. We are currently working on creating some really awesome content for the different levels of shooters. Stay tuned. SG

I've shot a lot of skeet, and I have to say I hit best when I come up to the moving target from behind, swing through the target smoothly, and pretty much pull the trigger just after my barrel swings past the target and is ahead of it. When the target is passing me at right angles, I hesitate a bit longer to fire after the barrel swings past the target. In many cases, it actually feels like I'm firing when the barrel is aimed at or just ahead of the target with little actual "lead".

...one of the best videos on technique for consistently hitting clays. But beware, even experienced shooters struggle to see where you're missing, especially if they're not stood directly behind you....also, the amount of perceived lead will vary depending on how fast your swing is. My lead picture is short because I accelerate the gun quickly, station 3 on the skeet range looks like about 18" of lead to me where as I've heard "around 3 feet" on so many videos...
@joaquinvalente8796
@joaquinvalente8796 Год назад
When I shoot skeet stations 3,4,5, I only lead 18” and break them all .
@RetrieverTrainingAlone

Excellent! For crossing shots, I shoot best with sustained lead, matching the target speed. I think I shoot sustained lead best because the target visually appears much slower with sustained lead. For incoming overhead shots, I shoot pull through the best...butt, belly, beak, bang where the incoming overhead target is about 45 degrees . For crossers more weight on front foot, for incoming overheads more weight on back foot.

As a shotgun instructor ( trap , skeet and sporting clays ) I find it difficult to convince new shooters to lead station 4 and 5 enough, they just don’t believe there is that much lead at 22 and 21 yds. And the tracker wads are a great teaching ade!

@KolyaNickD

A lot of talk about instinctive lead. This is true for closer shots but on long shots it's almost the opposite - you need to be pointing right into the empty space in front with an almost measured lead and it will indeed feel wrong at first. Another thing, on a fast crossed with a long track - trail behind it until you want to take your shot THEN swing through... this gives much more control and the faster swing can cut your lead right down.

One way I kinda learnt how to lead a target was grasping the concept of "Airshooting" in an awesome free to play shooter game called Team Fortress 2. Airshooting (or airshotting as a lot of players call it) Is shooting any target that is in the air and moving with a projectile like that different classes have and hitting the target in the air. (I.E. the soldier's rockets) What is critical in hitting an airshot is knowing the speed of the projectile, which if the game is played for long enough will become second nature. The next critical thing is the path that said projectile will take. The most common projectile used to airshot a player is the "rocket" Fired by the soldier class, after that it is the "pill" or "Grenade" Fired by the demoman class (Demo for short) and after that it would be the baseball from the scout's sandman item. The sandman (Which has a baseball the scout can launch) Shoots very differently from the rocket launcher due to the sandman's ball having a curve in it's shot where the soldier's rocket are straight and don't change their path. the hardest part in all of this is figuring out whether or not your target will air strafe. (Airstrafes or airstrafing is done by holding a and looking left or holding d and looking right, this allows a player to change their direction in the air which means that not only can players dodge rockets, pills etc. on the ground by moving away from their path, but also in the air) Sorry if this is long, but this is what got me into the idea of "leading".

@gouldshooting
@gouldshooting 7 лет назад
The barrel clamp that is attached to our magazine tube extensions does not have a stud for attaching a sling . We are using all Nordic Components magazine tube extensions and accessories. If you are talking about the standard forend for your gun you should be able to order one from a local dealer that has a swivel stud in it.
@nicholaspoma9086
@nicholaspoma9086 7 лет назад
Thanks! I found one with a swivel stud but I ended up not liking it because when the sling attached it wears on the barrel and mag tube. I might reinstall with some sort of rubber or leather pad to prevent this. I use the gun for clay only so the sling isn't high priority but I'll let ya know what I come up with. great video and thanks for the reply!

I know of a few World Champions who have admitted to removing the bead..it helps when you're learning to mount the gun to get consistency but otherwise it can be a distraction, especially to beginners who try to "aim" and measure lead with it...

this is what i dont understand (i am new to the sport by the way), if your eyes are supposed to remain on the target the entire time, how do you know how far your barrel is leading by/how do you know where youre pointing? i was told never to look at the barrel and to always remain on the target. confused!
@patchess5488
@patchess5488 9 лет назад
Agood thing to do is unfocus your eyes from the gunsight and focus them on the target so the sight should be blurry when you are ready to take the shot youll notice you naturally feel where the gun is pointing
@petterbjrvik4089
@petterbjrvik4089 8 лет назад
What many forget is that a proper and consistent mount of the gun is the first thing you need to work on. If you mount the gun the same way every time you don't have to "look at where the gun is pointing", your body points the gun for you. For this to work, the gun has to fit you properly.

From my gaming experience, it's the same as learning how to airshot in a game called Team Fortress 2. Seeing the crosshair and the other player in the air is something that can be critical and you need to have a consistent mouse sensitivity in order to know where the crosshair is or will be. Another thing that players do is instead of using the default white crosshair they use a bright green, bright pink or any crosshair that definitely stands out to the background so that when they know how fast their target is travelling, they just need to use their peripheral view to put the crosshair into place.

No no no no no no......your swing through is false! you have to swing smoothly but rapidly through the target and skeeze the triger at the target in the movment. The lead is authomatic then. all this under 30 yards. For the long case the pull away method is better.
