I'd probably use some compression as well. Frusciante may not use a compression pedal, but the recording is so strongly compressed that adding a pedal to the guitar chain may get you closer to the recorded sound.

Great video but everyone frets their D note on the 5th string whereas it’s actually the open D string that is played. That is how it was recorded

I’m pretty sure that you’re the only one who is teaching this correctly on RU-vid. Great job showing how Frusciante actually plays this. It’s based on SRV’s Texas shuffle technique.

Its close but he plays the main riff on 5th fret D where as Frusciante plays it on open string D which i find easier actually. I always feel like guys are making it a little more difficult with the 5 fret D over the open D

You could pick the Alexander Silver Jubilee pedal too if you don't have a Marshall Amp.

I've been practicing that muting technique for a while now, coming from a metal background it's really diffrent and difficult to get into. I heard Frusciante plays it by muting the E-string with his thumb, but that's completely impossible for me, so I'm also taking your approach. Good video even though I already knew how to play it, I was still playing along though :D

Idk if its only me. Its makes that thumb part easier to play if you learn or play a lot of Hendrix stuff like some chords. He dont do a lot of barre chords, he use the thumb thing instead

Guillaume, my man, you're playing it too clean, the syncopation is just too perfect and that's just not THE way to play this, go a bit more aggressive and punkier, sloppier and you'll get it.

Didn't even know this technique existed. I get the effect of it, but the muting seems more complicating. On the other hand, just fully striking is a simplification.

@@pierrengan7331 it's one of my favorite songs, so I had a lot of motivation to learn it i guess, and even then it still took me a few days before it sounded good. Eventually you'll figure out the muting and it'll be easy
