Normally not my kind of discussions, but now I do. When doing such a video, about 'hitting the tone', maybe learn a bit more about the artists gear and sound. Then your video would get more likes i guess. Very important for this song, Fender Strat in 2nd position into dotted 8th modulated delay into a Vox and played with a Herdim pick, as @dinik71 said 😉 On the other hand, thanks for Edge's attention 🤘👍
Edge wrote the song for the larger venues the band was playing at, so he wanted a HUGE song… but the track was so complicated to record that half the studio time they had for “The Joshua Tree” was spent working on just this track! (Adam Clayton explained that the Edge recorded a four-track demo in his house that he thought “was the best song ever written”, but the rest of the band thought was “in another language” that they really had a hard time translating.) Brian Eno was so aggravated by this one song he conspired to “accidentally” erase the reel of tape with weeks of work on it (all the individual instruments had been re-recorded so many times “Take 1” of this song doesn’t exist.) He had the tape in the reel-to-reel ready to go when an assistant bringing in tea caught him, realized what he was doing, dropped the tea and physically restrained him!!! Still it took until the night before the entire album had to go out to the record plant, and Edge was still like, “Wait? Can I record a backing vocal?” Everyone shouted him down! (He does get to sing one on live versions).
I found out that a huge part of the Edges sound is the pick. If you use a pick with grip on it and play with the gripped part, you're getting way closer...and I use a marshall sv20 as well (but for this song the Korg SDD-3000 Delay)
Thanks Guil! Edge is one of those guitarist that baffles me, the dotted 8th delay setting helps clarify a lot! ( I am used to mostly creating rolling thunder on bass so subtleties like this are part of what baffles me I guess)
Uh… The Edge used mainly AC30 his entire career and the main delay on the Joshua Tree album is the Korg SDD-3000…. The particular sound for WTSHNN is given to the fact that The Edge positioned his amp in an entrance area of a hall of the studio. And he plays his Dunlop pick in reverse position with the rough area scraping the strings.
Would love to see a Hit the tone of I'm the Mountain by Stoned Jesus and Funeralopolis by Electric Wizard. Time to bring some stoner/doom to this series. Thanks for another amazing video! Greeting from Brasil.
You’re missing one important thing of this particular song !! The edge used a rough pick to get that rough picking sound !! Great demonstration of the greatest song ever been written and yes when the keyboards starts and the guitar comes in wow a great part of the concert and the atmosphere is probably the most famous uplifting song ever been performed by anyone !!! 😀
With the title "Hit the Tone" when it comes to The Edge, I fully expected everything to be spot on. The delay effect was passable, PRS over a strat is passable (barely), BUT the fact you arent using a HERDIM PICK is a epic fail of achieving the "scraping" effect he's known for. If you title it "Hit the Tone", do better, cheers.
Take a look at most solos without distortion and chorus, most are pretty simple. I remember when I was a kid I thought Metallica had some crazy complicated solos. Yeah their not.
This series is more or less about teaching songs or riffs. It’s not about using the exact vintage gear to recreate the sound as it was recorded in the studio. We know… Tele, Vox AC30, and the Herdim picks. You *can* go nuts at your local vintage shop if you want. Just play your guitar. Who cares.
Fantastic video! Think a hit the tone episode on 2000 Light Years Away by Green Day would be fun. I know Green Day has had their spotlight already, but their earlier albums have a tone that I rarely hear (specifically the Kerplunk album) and it would be great to see someone replicate it. :)
