In this video, top coach Craig Bryant, explains how to hit winners with the backhand punch shot.
The backhand punch is a powerful attacking shot, which you can use when the ball pops up a little high. Using your forearm and wrist to snap through the back of the ball, you can hit an aggressive attack which is hard to return.
Craig explains the technique, how much power to use, where to aim your shot and how to practice.
It's another very good shot to add to your attacking arsenal.

Good addition to block - adding punch (instead of just hard block) when you get a slightly higher ball. We're starting to play a lot more here in NC in the States. By the way, I put the red Joola rubber sheet on a Andro Gauzy blade and I love it - thanks again for that rubber sheet.

In the 1980s 90s most players used this shot as backhand topspin was rare to see. Waldner did the best . He could even put backspin in this shot. You can see now moregrad use it with backspin.

Great channel, learned a ton. One question/remark. To me it often seems as if the explanation is different from what I actually see. In this case it looks like Craig hits the ball with the lower part of the bat, and then uses a rotation of his wrist to give it speed. But that is not how he explains it... Love to hear your thoughts on it, tnx.
@CarloRoosen
@CarloRoosen 3 года назад
would be great to see a close-up slow-mo too, (recorded in high speed - slowing down a YT video does not reveal the tiny motions)
@craigyb22
@craigyb22 3 года назад
@@CarloRoosen Hi Carlo, all rackets have a ‘sweet spot’ and by focusing on hitting the centre of the racket you’ll have a better chance of connecting with the sweet spot. If you bounce a ball up and down on your racket and allow the ball to slowly work towards the edge, you’ll get to a point where you don’t feel the ball as much as when it’s in the centre. It’s always going to be tough to hit dead centre in such a quick sport but it’s a good mental approach to have for most shots. Hope that helps and thanks for the question.
@ShaneLindsayDr
@ShaneLindsayDr 3 года назад
As I understand it, the racket has a sweet spot as Craig explains, but as a racket rotates the tip of the racket will have higher racket head speed than the base of the racket, so you will get more power/spin if the ball is contacted there. This is utilised on the serve in particular, where predictability is high. In a rally, there is more uncertainty, and higher risk hitting near the edge. If you aim to hit near the edge, and miscalculate, you could miss entirely. If you aim for the middle, and miscalculate, the consequences aren't as bad. Pro's are able to hit the ball more consistently where they want to, even in rallys, but for coaching, Craig's advice to aim to hit the middle seems sound.

I was figuring out how it would work in penholders... It could be done with the forehand rubber due to the mechanism of the stroke... And it could be similar, but it can't be called backhand punch... Or in penholders this doesn't exist, does it? Tom, can we ever see a coach teaching these advanced techniques for penholders? That would be very helpful and interesting for many players too.
@5pp000
@5pp000 Год назад
Most penholders don't seem to develop this shot, but I once saw one who was good at it, so I know it's possible. I think the technique is not too different, except that of course, the wrist has to be very pronated to produce the required closed bat angle.

Thanks a lot for this great tutorial. But I got a question. Craig told us at 3:11, to hit the ball at the center of the racket. But I can see, that he hits the ball at the upper side of the rubber. Is this correct? I think at the upperside you`ll get more power into the shots, because of the whip effect. Or not?

Hi Tom.I love your videos It helped me a lot.Id like to ask you one question about the serves:is ghost serve illegal? If its not,is it considered in somehow dishonest? Ive heard that sometimes.For me is a non sense as ive never read a tt rule against this serve.Can I do the ghost serve and get the ball back in one bounce without being punished with the flames of hell? thanks Tom!!
@TomLodziak
@TomLodziak 3 года назад
It is perfectly legal, but actually very difficult to do in match. In 14 years of amateur table tennis, I have never seen a player execute it successfully. The ball always seems to move too far or too high and the opponent can reach it before it bounces back. But certainly give it a go!

@@TomLodziak thanks Tom!.Im working on it.Im started playing from 8 to 13.Now Im amateur player.Yes, its true is not easy in match for me because the level of concentration for this serve is very high.And when your heart is working fast is not so easy.I m sending you a link .ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2IhbfO8P834.html

Great video! It works well with top spin, but you didn’t demonstrate how to punch an under spin ball.
@TomLodziak
@TomLodziak 2 года назад
It is harder to do with backspin. If the ball is low with backspin, then the punch is unlikely to work. The ball will probably go into the net. For these balls you need to topspin. If it is high backspin, you may be able to punch, but you probably need to swing a little more up.
@jasv49
@jasv49 7 месяцев назад
because you don't just hit backspin balls flat (unless they are very high), that's what the topspin loop is for

Looks like a flick to me. I like to leave the wrist out of the equation totally, but I guess thats just the level I am at right now. Plus I am able to generate more force than the regular table tennis player I guess because this requires a lot of power from the chest.
