Hitch install on a 2021 Lexus RX 450h F Sport

I just bought a brand new 2021 Lexus RX 450h F Sport Black Line Special edition and as soon as I got it home I began the install of a Curt hitch. I haven't seen any videos specific to the F Sport which is a little different so I explain that in this video.

The RX450H factory tow-prep package is Lexus option "TO". It has 3 components: (i) upgraded radiator fans; (ii) adds a transmission oil cooler; and (iii) adds a trailer light wiring plug (brake, turn and running lights) up under the left rear side. Using a hitch for a bike rack or platform carrier is one thing. But without option "TO" pulling a trailer (without the upgraded radiator fans and transmission oil cooler) is an entirely different matter. Without option "TO" pull a trailer at your own risk. That is likely why some dealers may be reluctant to install a hitch on models without factory tow-prep option "TO".

Sorry to say bro but Lexus does not supply that exterior color with a red interior. Please remember Lexus is boring in its offerings but still can't beat the reliability, lol

The electrical towing connector on my 2021 RX350 F-Sport is totally inactive. The problem is not in your trailer. Lexus dealer said a trailer hitch cannot be installed on that car. I think that is why the connector doesn't provide voltage for lights.You will have to wire it directly the the brake/turn lights.There are non-invasive clip on kits that allow you to do this without cutting the wires (Tekonsha Modulite ZCI Trailer Light Power Module).

I ended up finding the proper connector from etrailers.com. It was a direct plug-n-play. If you’re interested I’ll go find the link.

From my understanding, you will need to buy a towing module box to have the power run to the trailer plug. It's located to the right side of the trunk where you will need to remove the plastic cover. You can call U-haul to get the plug or Google.

Not sure if you solved the wiring issue but the Lexus might need the hitch module and the location for the install is on the right side of the trunk under the small storage box there is a vinyl cover over the plug, plug it in and it should supply power to the hitch wiring. Check out the hitch install from U Haul video and at the end they show you exactly where the locatiion will be for the module.

Great video Jon, i bought the 2021 RX 450H F sport with the intention to install the hitch for my bike rack, only to be told by my local dealership hitch is not compatible with the 450H F-Sport. Now my question to you, have you noticed any difference in handling due to removing that swaybar/damper that sits between the frame rails?!?!

Isn’t there a “tow package” on some RX-350’s that require a bigger radiator & bigger cooling fan & engine & transmission cooler. See RU-vid video on trims of 2021 & 2022 Lexus RX 350, on a RU-vid channel called “ Build your own” at the 10:00 time stamp

Awesome video, will be doing a similar install when it warms up! So you did not know that you had the tow package (trans cooler and wiring) installed? I called the dealership and they said that unless I have the tow prep package, they won’t install a hitch receiver. I need to tow two jet skis that weigh in at roughly 1500 pounds combined. Our RXs should easily be able to handle that even without the tow prep package right?

What about putting spacers between the bracket and the frame instead of trimming the plastic?

That is the route I'm pursuing. Made a template (13 x 3") from the hitch that locates the bolt ovals. Looking for a fab shop to to make the spacers from 1/4" galvanized steel. I will still paint them, but want to make sure that they won;t rust. I just can't bring myself to cut the bumper cover.

Follow up. I had a local metal shop fabricate 2 metal spacers from 5/16" mild steel. They are 13.5 x 3.5". I then primed, painted and clear coated them. They encompas the entire flat surface between the hitch and the frame rails where the three oval bolt holes are located. Also bought longer 40 MM grade 10.9 bolts from Fastenail. (original bolts were 30 mm). A trial fit pretty much resolved the bumper bowing. However, it occurres to me that doing this might reduce the towing (or recovery) capacity somewhat by increasing the sheer forces placed on the 6 mounting bolts and the corrisponding nuts in the frame rails. This is probably not a huge issue of you are just attaching a bicycle hitch. But for towing or use as a velicle recovery attachment point, it probably does de-rate the hitch 's capacity some by increasing the lateral sheer forces placed on the 6 bolt attachment points to the frame rails. Life is full of trade offs!

The problem is more than likely in the trailer wiring. All 450h models have the trailer package & it only plugs in one way. I’m going to guess that a ground is not connected or there is a faulty bulb. Do the turn signals work?

Nope, none of the lights on the trailer work ATM. I'm about to go outside with a multimeter and see if there's a current coming off the harness on the car side. Any idea what kind of voltages I should be looking for? I can probably find a wiring diagram.

Did some research. I see that white wire on harness is ground and brown wire should be running lights. Multimeter shows no voltages at all on any pins. I think that I need an additional wiring harness that comes preinstalled with the tow package (my revelation here is that the presence of the tow plug up under the bumper does not mean the tow package is installed). I’ll likely have the dealer install that as I don’t want to go disassembling my brand new car any more than I have already. 😕

Back again. I just bought a 2021 Lexus RX450h F Sport, and because this car does not have a “tow prep” package listed on the window sticker, the dealership will not install the OEM hitch, but they will sell me one (some dealers won’t). I think the OEM hitch tucks in high and tight behind the bumper facia, and that means removing the entire bumper facia to install. The aftermarket hitch looks good, so I will check with Curt or Draw Tite. Question for you: does the rear damper actually have a shock or compression feature, or is it acting more like a torsion bar that compensates for frame flex/twist? Thank you.

I found that the damper is of little use. So when the bar is removed, the hitch is taking its place.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Lexus refused to do it since I don't have the "tow" package (ie the upgraded transmission) despite the fact that I only want it for bikes. If the wiring harness doesn't work, check for power. If there is none, then there may be a module box that needs to be installed (possibly under the right trunk cover? the closest I could find was at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EYpQfaRWR_c.html but that's for an older RX350).

I just don't understand why if you have the money to buy a Lexus RX450 which is very expensive, why wouldn't you pay the 400 bucks install of the hitch ? those crude cuts you made pretty much ruin the install. And the damper has a purpose. Crazy man. This isn't the Tahoe where who cares if you cut it up.

Getting this done by Lexus costs about $1k. And they won't even do it unless your car has the entire tow prep package installed.

Lexus of Bridgewater quoted me $1,500 to install the hitch. So I told them to go ahead and order the parts. I never heard back from them. So I called them several times over the next several weeks. The parts never arrived. I eventually gave up.

I think MJ P is right-they just didn't want to do it. Unfortunately, they wouldn't just tell me that. Instead they lead me on for almost a month.

Am I missing something or when one spends ~$60K for a Lexus, why wouldn’t one pay relatively little more and have the Lexus service department install a genuine Lexus hitch pkg ... and avoid scarfing up your lower rear facia? Just sayin’. Otherwise, good presentation.

Because the hitch alone is $595 and installation is another $200! Or, you can buy the Curt for $188.

@@JG-gw3up Actually, the dealer originally wanted $1.8 - $2.1K to install mine...then when I called back to make the appt, they refused to do it! So I used this video, did NOT cut into my bumper (I bought longer bolts and spacers from Metal Masters in FL) and it's great! Just need to figure out how to get the trailer lights to work for the handful of times I'll need it for a small trailer (versus our bikes).
