In this episode: Long talk about 'North by Northwest', then Hitchcock try to do recreate scenes from 'the 400 Blows'. At the end, introduction to 'Psycho', developped in the next episode.
Introduction:
Hitchcock and Truffaut are going back on "North by Northwest", one of the director's Masterpiece shot in 1959.
Once again the discussion is purely about 'mise-en-scène': directing. Actors' direction, cutting, use of space and time, editing... are the key elements with which Hitchcock directs his movies and controls audience emotions.
The conversation bewteen Hitch and Truffaut then deviates on "The 400 Blows". Truffaut explains he how he was inspired by Hitchcock to shoot a scene from his film.
Hitchcock asks for details about the scene and remakes it his way.
Pure moment of complicity between directors that wasn't on the book about those interviews.

Hitchcock had very little faith in his female actresses and here he lambastes almost all of his leading ladies. The "heartache and pain" of trying to make them look sophisticated. He was "forced" to have Hedren go right into "Marnie" lest she lose what she had gained in the "Birds". "They don't learn", he says, even after a whole picture. "The effort was completely wasted". Fascinating disclosure.

Unfortunately there is not a proper discussion on 'To Catch a Thief', basically Truffaut is selecting the films he wants to discuss, and this wasn't one of them. In episode 21 they go directly from 'Rear Window' to 'The Wrong Man', forgetting 'To Catch a Thief', 'The Trouble with Harry' & 'The Man who Knew too Much 2'

He talks about it in the book. The thing is that not all recordings have been made public. Only 12 of the 25 hours.

I speak a little French. I love the fact Hitch completely ignores Truffaut's description of the second scene. He helped him with the first one and gave up when he heard how bad Francois is at describing his own scenes as if he wasn't the guy who directed the film. No storyboards, unprepared, very bad story telling and very confusing too. Truffaut and the French arrogance. Way over estimated little man....

sophalino brown “The 400 Blows” is still a great film, though.

sophalino : why do you think Hitchcock accepted the very long interview (many days) with Truffaut?

It's surprising that someone so perceptive as Truffaut didn't ask why Hitchcock was so snyde and disrespectful toward a colleague who had starred in two of his films. Hitchcock could, at least, have had the good manners to use her name ... Tippi Hedren.
