The King is now a hold over symbol of the monarchy. They do not get involved in the politics of governing the people like they used to. They have a Prime Minister to take care of the peons.

So what, he made an effort. Churchill's French was bad but they appreciated the effort; and he had many good friends among the French and from all walks of life.

And we all know how he managed to get to Cambridge(Trinity College) despite achieving such mediocre 'A' Level results. Note that Trinity College is right next to my own alma mater St.John's College and that I - a mere 'commoner' and 'oik' - unlike your beloved pampered and utterly superfluous royal relic and ridiculous Right Charlie - had to make a genuinely gargantuan effort to get to Cambridge and to escape from the council estate where I and my three sisters and brother had grown up in poverty after our father died young. And two of my sisters also made a superhuman effort to win places at Oxford (as in University) with my third sister heading to King's College London. And we all had the extraordinarily selfless efforts and tireless servant-less devotion of our extremely resourceful mother to thank for much of that success - not only did she also make a superhuman effort to feed us, clothe us and quietly get us to believe we could achieve anything in life - she also for decades had to get on her trusty old bicycle and cycle to work and back five evenings a week after shopping for, cooking and preparing our evening meals for us - with many of the ingredients(eg. mountains of vegetables/fruit) grown via her magically green fingers in our small council house back garden. Again - all with no servants to do the work and make the effort for her. Oh - and she also effortlessly taught my sister Moira to play the piano and sing as stupendously as she could. Yet you say that at least he, HRH - His Royal Haughtiness/Hopelessness - "made an effort" ? Gimme a break.. Paul G

His pronunciation of German is pretty diabolical for someone who's supposed to be so well educated and supposedly highly intelligent - neither of these attributes were apparent in his speech.

Given his German family background King Charles' German is surprisingly halting. He is not fluent, he is reading from a script.

@@freeman8128 The family stopped conversing in German more than a century ago. He learned it as a foreign language, much like Boris Johnson's French and Macron's English. Good command, but cannot be mistaken as a native. The vast majority of UK people cannot speak any other language. Many of them cannot speak their own language all that well.

The whole end of the video is pure fire, but that line brilliantly incorporates the likely view of the conservative officer class towards the end of the war in a nutshell. They started out seeing Hitler as their salvation and in the end they allowed themselves to become the useful idiots to a genocidal extremist and his gang of thugs. In one way the view is correct, because had Germany maintained its Monarchical system somehow, they would have been far less inclined to undermine a system they saw as their own, unlike with Weimar. This would have reduced the opportunity for Hitler's NSDAP to come to power, though anything could happen in an alternative scenario.
