On the Obersalzberg, not far from the Documentation Centre, is a forgotten Nazi-era ruin. It was the building where Hitler wrote Part 2 of his book 'Mein Kampf' - today, few people visit this lonely and isolated site, the site of the Kampfhäusl, or 'Struggle House'.
Dr. Mark Felton FRHistS, FRSA, is a well-known British historian, the author of 22 non-fiction books, including bestsellers 'Zero Night' and 'Castle of the Eagles', both currently being developed into movies in Hollywood. In addition to writing, Mark also appears regularly in television documentaries around the world, including on The History Channel, Netflix, National Geographic, Quest, American Heroes Channel and RMC Decouverte. His books have formed the background to several TV and radio documentaries. More information about Mark can be found at: en.wikipedia.o...

I read "Mein Kampf" in high school as a book report project although admittedly I only got through Book 1. Take it from me "Mein Kampf" is so poorly written it was absolute torture reading it, one of the worst if not THE worst book I've ever read, irrespective of the political ideas. I admitted in the report I just couldn't deal with Book 2 and the teacher said "No problem!" I did get an A on the report. Trust me, it was Hitler's oratory that made him a success, NOT "Mein Kampf."

Our family friend in Germany named Leo Aumuller found an autographed Mein Kampf in the landfill in Upper Franconia in the 1970s. It was still in a presentation box. Leo knew how to find things.....he then lent it to a friend who promptly "lost it" or just flatly refused to give it back. Never saw the book again. How could he report it? it was illegal to own probably. Leo is also the one who found an 1870s Colt pistol Euro export in that same landfill. He hung the 6 shooter in his work area in the garage on a nail and thought nothing of it. A gun enthusiast friend of his spotted it while on a visit and bought it for an extreme amount of money. That gun probably ended up in Switzerland for double that.

What shocks me is the condition it is in compared to my visit in 2009! The foundation wall has many stones missing, souvenir hunters of whatever persuasion are carrying them away. What helped me to find the Kampfhaeusl and other sites were maps of the Obersalzberg, from my, now late, Professor Hoffmann (while studying history at McGill University). His work entitled ‘Hitler’s Personal Security’ De Capo Press, 2000, pages 182-185, have all the key buildings and the extensive tunnel systems mapped out.

I have heard other historians say that Hitler did NOT dictate Mein Kampf to Hess, that Hess had terrible typing skills. I would love to have historians get together and clear this up .
@greliusz
@greliusz 9 месяцев назад
this is a high probability, we have files and official letters written by Hess, in which he wrote on a typewriter or by hand, the words and expressions are similar to Mein Kampf. A man who graduated from high school and has an education. Hitler had a fiery talk, but he couldn't write. He's lazy and messy, the whole psychological thing is clear. Officially, according to Nazi-era, Hitler wrote it. He took royalties for the publication, but Hitler himself didn't know how to handle the matter either - Hess was the secretary and he provided him with money and privileges. He dealt with what he needed until 1940. He wrote, presented the document and Hitler simply signed. Same thing with Martin Borman from 1940-45. Therefore, there are suspicions that mein kampf was not Hitler's author. He only suggested ideas, but he couldn't write. If you know German, read Hitler letters to his sisters and mother, you will understand.

@7:46 is the Platterhoff before it's renovation to become the larger facility it would eventually become. The Guest house did not have the space to the left to have such a wing. The hill drops off steeply to the left (west) and to the right was a hill (now a new museum). Visited the site as a US Army Private in 95 as part of a USO single soldier retreat. We were lodged at the General Walker (platerhoff). The guest house in 95 was basically just a shell from the 2 floor down. the 2nd floor was mostly intact. There was a half ass chain link fence around the building but it was mostly full of holes and pushed over. The Ground floor bathroom had green tiles and the 2nd floor bathroom had light blue tiles. I still have blue and green tiles in storage. The "struggle house" was across the road from the hotel and up a small dirt parth in 95. You still could make out where Hitler was sitting by lining up the rocks. They seem to have been moved/ removed since 95. Not far aways from the "struggle house" is/ was part of the foundation to the large meeting hall. The roof collapsed not long after its completion due to snow. The General Walker gift shop sold a really nice book on the history of the Obersalzberg. Lots of pictures and maps.

Thanks, Mark, for posting these. It gives me chills to think what the human race can do to each other. And the horrors this one person's mind orchestrated, and that ppl want to emulate him! And sadly, history does repeat itself! ✌️💚

I visited this spot in 1989. Actually read a few pages of MK while there. Historic, yes. Uplifting, no. Evil can sprout anywhere.

I tried to read it once, having an interest in WWII history. I couldn't get very far. it was tedious, and poorly written, although I did read an English translation.

I read the whole thing but cannot agree more, it was tedious and a chore to get through. I think it took me a year to get it done.@@rdhunkins

@@gwc656g @rdhunkins Yes, exactly! Tedious is the perfect word to describe it; I've heard from so many others too, so I'm glad it's not only me that struggled. I attempted to read it years ago and it's on my bucket list as something I should eventually pick up again just to say I've read it. It's definitely a inner monologue disguised as a book, probably better suited to being a verbal ramble or a speech. Hitler was, after all, known to be far better at articulating his thoughts than he was committing them through writing.

Imagine being Amann, sitting in that tiny cabin for hours on end with Hitler, writing down his words. And then suggesting that 'Mein Kampf' would be a more catchy title than Viereinhalb Jahre (des Kampfes) gegen Lüge, Dummheit und Feigheit, (Four and a Half Years (of Struggle) Against Lies, Stupidity and Cowardice).

Great stuff, again something I had never read about, but wasn't it Hess who corrected mein Kampf ? and does that make him the first grammar Nazi?

Häusel in Austrian dialect can also mean outhouse. Consequently "Kampfhäusel" can also translate to "Struggle outhouse"

I would suggest that it means outbuilding, in the sense of a small building or house separate from the main house, not a latrine specifically. Idiomatically, it could refer to any kind of 'little house' - a work shed, storage barn, spring house, etc.

I am in two minds about this. In one i would say it is history and teaches us about this part of history and in another i say it should be wiped clean from the earth because of the fools who follow this dead ideology who worship at this altar.

These misguided people that still praise Hitler and other murderers are one reason history is so important. These stories must not be forgotten or allowed to be rewritten by those that would bring about such evil again.

The little Italian Napoleon murdered millions of people in northern Europe simply because he wanted to be remembered in history....and it worked. If a leader cares about giving the people a better life...he is totally forgotten by the historians. But if that same leader murders a million people, the historians crawl before him in undying admiration.

There is a detectable fascination with things Hitler and Nazidom. i think the Psychoanalysist Karl Jung put his finger on the source and energy of this obsessive fascination. There are deep archetypes in our common human psyche on which the Nazis instinctively drew. The swastika, the black uniforms, the massed. soldiers and youth groups gathered to adulate one man who speaks to them as the Destiny of the Nation, the deaths head symbol. the made up figure of the eternal Jew... All these were drawn out of the European consciousness and exerted an uncanny influence on millions of people many of whom would probably have been Social Democrats or disinterested in politics altogether. The lesson from history is to renounce the hypnotic power of this magic brew and to study what its appeal is. In America today these same symbols are being fed into another populist demagogue and returning as in a loop system. The lessons about the Nazis need to be learned from history.

Why rocks on the roof? Weird question maybe but where they for? Holding something like a water barrier for the roof or camouflage from the air or hopes of bombs fusing on the rocks not the foundation? A quick google came up with this The rocks worked to hold the shingles on against the wind, and also to hold the snow on for insulation and to break up “roof avalanches” so the snow wouldn't slide off in big sheets.
