Bad lesson, play for fun. I love grinding and playing for skill in osu but if ur at the stage where you've hit a skill wall you'll get frustrated playing more difficult stuff with the expectation that your skill is increasing. If you wanna play difficult stuff play it because its fun because expecting to play it and immediately improve can lead to the same feeling you have while rank grinding

maintaining your rank means you are actually getting better at the same rate as the people around you. it does not mean you are not improving. just not faster, nor slower than others. also rank =! skill. there will always be better players below your rank and worse players above your rank. as long as you enjoy game everything should be fine. :+1:

Amazing video + you had the courage to speak up about an internal struggle which is not mentioned a lot. Playing for fun and finding your own style, through you own mixed skins, peripherals or even grip is something you learn with time and playing with that mindset is a lot healthier than looking at artificial numbers that barely represent the way you play the game.

@@SaowAngel fun fact since you aren't losing rank it means you are not at a skill war your just improving at the same rate as others (which is commonly confused with skill wall) there's also really slowly losing rank which means your simply improving but really slowly it's hard to tell improving really slowly to a skill wall but after a while if your able to advance stars it should mean your progress is simply just slowed down then theres a skill wall which means no improvement whatsoever while yes you might get mini bursts there will otherwise be no improvement (however this is all I know from doing reserach and leraning new things about how stuff like skill walls work otherwise i've basically only started ive researched more about osu than i have ever played osu though my playtime is definetly catching up to my research time, with all that considered take my word with a grain of salt)

@@deleted-testmostly the very even placement of bricks, the very even application of mortar, and cleanliness of the bricks on most building sites, any walls you may build will later be plastered so most masons tend to prioritize speed over precision, which ends up with walls that dont necessarily look the best before plastering (dont misunderstand, it still serves its purpose of being a wall all the same) walls like this tend to take much longer to build as they require much more care put into them as to keep it looking good

Simple and easy fix: play more outside your confort zone. Osu is basically a simpler version of bodybuilding, you warm up with light weights (low star maps) then you use "normal" weights (maps that are fcable or 1 missable) then at last heavy weights with decent form (basically try and go for passes and if you dont want to do that just play maps that you can sub 20 miss (ofc depends on map)) Also please stop caring about acc so hard 99% isnt everything in this game you dont have to get it on every map 95 is okay as well. This is what ive been doing for 2 years now and i sky rocketed in skill also abuse osu trainer or mcosu

I struggled with ranking for a time and it frustrated me a lot because I wanted to reach 80k by a certain point and seeing how I was moving up the rankings it looked doable in a short amount of time. I ended up only focusing on rank and that led to a big loss of passion for the game and simply missing a note on a minute long map would put my whole setup at risk. It wasn’t until I took a break, dabbled in mania, went out with friends, took time to reflect on why I love the game to begin with, that my passion returned for the game. Osu isn’t meant to be played for rank. The point of the game from its beginnings was always to have fun. Rank is just an added bonus so people have more to look at. Sometimes it’s best to just forget about the scores and just play for the sake of playing a game you really enjoy and not stress over things that in time will come to you. Anyways W video really cool editing plus made a cameo in vc pog

As someone who was stuck on a wall for more than 5 months, I think I've actually improved significantly. The second I started playing for both fun and skill, sessions felt less mentally taxing & heavy. Right now my goal is to play difficult maps that have my favorite songs, like tech, long streams, consistency, etc. My rank has stayed around the same at 35k, but I've been able to expand my skill all around the board, which I think will help in the long run.

very entertaining and informative video, I remember being on both sides of the mindset spectrum you mentioned actually since at like 2022-2021 I was hardstuck on like 50k then I got a random popoff which made me ahead of everyone of my friends at 9k so I had like the superior mindset which as you mentioned is toxic, but yeah the main takeaway from all this is that maybe some people is just meant to be where they are in skill which may sound bad but at the end of the day it is a video game and it is meant to be played for fun and it dosent really matter if you are good at it or not (and I learned that the hard way D:) , and besides popoffs and skillboosts are random and can happen at any time so you never know :DD. but yeah again great video I enjoyed watching it and you portrayed the main points really nicely and I also respect the story aspect you put in aswell!!!

I get you man, I felt this when I was 100k, I felt it when I hit 50k and I'm feeling it now at 20k. I think its important for people to realize just because you put 1k hours in the game doesn't mean you're gonna be a 4 digit or whatever is expected of you at that time range. To put it in perspective, even your rank 80k is still top 80k in a game that millions of people have played, its a rank that a majority of the community have never and will never achieve. If ranking up was as easy as just play the game for 1k hours someone in 80k skill range would be in the 100-200k+ range cause anyone can just play the game a lot.

This managed to stumble into my recommended as I sometimes view osu! content but barely play at all. What's interesting is that phase of yours in which you tried out several playstyles happened to me as well, except much, much later into my career during which I neared 3 digit. This was back in around 2020. I was trying out areas frantically in the hopes of getting closer to that Remote Control DT and Ascension to Heaven score, but this had the opposite effect. Got tilted too much and regressed in skill as soon as life priorities took over. Still a bit salty about it today, but not as much now. I wouldn't want to be in a top player's shoes anyway, being older now. Basically, your story as a high 5 digit shares some similarities with mine. Just goes to show that we weren't all that different as players, despite the several magnitudes of difference in skill.

i really can feel you, i came back to the game after a few breaks (long years of breaks actually) and i can't even play the whole song of my top play (it was 245pp dt play) then i just pushed harder my speed to get more consistency (pushing 200 -220-240-260bpm gradually) getting less fingerlocks and then a few months it gave me such nice improvements, even i beat my top plays, but getting constantly that mood it ruins your head and sooner or later it'll be bad, trying to get something that requires time and patience, but i'm already hitting a new wall called 300pp barrier, i chocked a lot of 300pp plays and i'm still waiting that copium to push me forward to try improve my skills. but i ended it with the same thought as you too, if it's doesn't come the time to get my first 300pp then i'll getting fun in that time and it's the best option that you could get.

I felt this in my core. I was hardstuck the same skill level and rank for some months. I switched to full area and decreased day by day until I found my "perfect area" and finally broke through the wall. For me personally, it was mainly mentality that held me back. You'll break through eventually! Instead of "play more" try playing with a purpose or a list of small goals.

osu! is an interesting outlet to put yourself into. I've struggled a whole hell of a lot with this game. I used to want to hit arbitrary numbered ranks such as 3 digit and beyond. Once I got a past the 5 digit mark, reaching 4 digit/top 10,000, I realized that I didn't even feel happy. It was one of the first endeavors I put almost everything I could into. That feeling of not being happy was more a subtle relief. That was when I felt lost with the game and in turn in life. I since play the game for fun whenever I get an urge, not letting myself get all too invested with where I am or should be. A process that still has lingering remnants, memories of the frustration, and inner struggle to improve. I don't necessarily regret it though. I learned a lot of lessons from this game and intend to play it even more for fun from time to time. Here are some things I feel I have learnt: If you want to improve in the game, the best way, in my opinion, is to slowly work your way up. With occasionally trying to limit test to push yourself to give a boost long term if you treat it right. Trying to do hard things, such as AR11 and other difficult tasks, will give you a new found sense of speed and cursor placement. Working on various skill sets in tandem is better than individual for the most part. Solely focusing on streams will often burn you out; working on jumps will burn you out; and so forth. I think the idea of improvement is an overvalued one. Having fun is truly the no.1 greatest thing in any endeavor. If you find enjoyment in the process of learning, and gaining improvement that way, osu! is a game that doesn't quite reward that. It's a game of mechanical improvement at its forefront, unless you have a fundamental struggle such as really, really bad technique. It is rarely you will find improvement through actively looking out to learn more. It is still a worthwhile effort if you enjoy all that though. Just know that the best way to get better is to play when you feel like it and enjoy the time you spend.

Funnyy I've had a pretty similar experience, and when it comes to playtime vs skill, I've got it pretty bad (over half my playtime is offline, I've got a total of around 2000, and I'm around 85k). I've always tried to compensate for my slow mechanical improvement rate by just playing a ton, but the past couple years have been especially slow no matter what. I can still be proud with how far I've gotten since I have a movement disorder, but I can't help comparing myself to everyone else despite the difference in situations. But the game is still fun, and my friends still cheer me on even though they're much better, so I'll keep going for now :)

Haha, we've all been there. I was stuck for 2 years at one point before finally setting a new top play. IMO it was because I started to play less for pp and more for fun. During that time I also started to actively try and improve in some skillsets by playing them more rather than just trying to set top plays on comfortable maps. In the end, how everyone improves differs, and what matters is having a growth mindset and not giving up. it's also worth noting that decay is a real thing and it hits hard. You might have been stuck at 80k for years but that doesn't mean you didn't improve. At the very least, you didn't deteriorate in skill, which is sadly pretty common. Anyways, glad you came to terms with it. Like you said, as long as you're having fun :D

ive never rly cared about rank but being skill walled in osu is probably still the most depressing feeling in gaming because i just want to play the good songs but the good songs are usually 6,7,8,9 stars and its just so frustrating... the game is still fun but i had to just accept the reality and prioritise my mental health lol now i play like once a month, pretty much no progress, treating it as a casual game that i play solely for fun without any intent of getting better. also helps that i found something else to replace osu as my tryhard serious game that fits me better which is celeste! (and many other games tbh theres so many things u can do in a lot of games)
@falapadieu
@falapadieu Год назад
As an osu! player with inferiority for my middle name, this video is oddly uplifting. Players are as different in skill progression as they are different as individuals, so the one thing that matters is your own improvement and that you're enjoying the game. I've been a 6-digit for 4 years now, with almost all of my current best plays set back in 2020 so it feels like I'm stagnating despite all efforts to improve. But seeing these subtle improvements in my playstyle over time, and suddenly pulling a new record (in the last 3 years, 40pp higher no less) the other day, maybe I wasn't really stagnating. I just suck at improving so it took that long. Well... I still love the game even now, despite the "stagnation" and regardless of all that craziness. So I guess the effort meant something. And that's cool. Nevertheless, the path to _git gud_ is a long one, on which we shall continue.

I've had multiple skill wall breakthroughs and I'll just say it's all in the mindset. How you approach your mistakes. You need to Identify them, experiment, adapt, and overcome them. There are useful programs already like replay analyzers to help you out. Work smarter not just harder

This video is so relatable, because I’m experiencin similar thing To be exact, I have that similar feeling when playing Arcaea, I spent everyday playing it, practicing it and yet I can’t see results, others who play 2 times even 3 times less than me are all getting towards 13.00 while I stuck at 12.75, it definitely makes me feel worthless sometimes and even tho I know I’m already pretty good and I’m not actually worthless, I can’t really control myself to not think about it, it’s really common for me to lose all confidence and motivation for a whole night. I don’t get these feelings when playing other rhythm games because I can clearly see progress.

Yooo great video! As someone who has been stuck for almost 2 years without a new top play (until recently). I understand how demoralizing it is at times to see others improve and pass you. Regardless, I found that playing fun, and challenging maps which pushed my limits in different skill sets helped me more in the long run than pushing for performance points and playing the same farm maps all the time for rank. TL;DR: have fun when pushing skill cap :3

For me, what made me improve past the 80K was forcing myself to play 6.6 - 7 star maps, it's been 3 months and i am 50k now and very close to my 7* FC and a few more 300pp plays

i also had a similar issue as you, even though my play hour is 5 times lower than yours i feel like ill never be able to get out from 6 digit. I love playing any kind of rythm games so i play every modes in osu. after playing some time i realised osu!taiko was much more enjoyable and appealing to me. and now im almost #6000 global and #20 in my country with half play time. but i do hope ill manage to become 5 digit in osu!str some time later.

I've been there and still am, in 2019 I reached my peak rank of 7,000 and thought I was gonna keep improving untill I couldn't get any more decent 340+PP plays and felt frustrated cuz of that. Tried changing my sensitivity, my play style, different keys etc and nothing seemed to work, then I gave up, after 3/4 years of basicly innactivity (just occasionally playing here and there) I tried to come back to osu! and it worked! I topped my best score 7 times and got way more 340+PP plays which put me from 26k up to 15k which is today (total of 900 Raw PP), all in around 10 days of playing. I was surprised but still I feel like I should have a 400PP play already and unfortunatelly what I got is a First Storm FC for 395PP and a literall 1 miss and a play with 1 sliderbreak on 7 star ghost rule which could have been easily my first 400. The point being is that sometimes it's ok to take big breaks maybe not so big as mine for you to have somewhat of a mental reset I would say. But anyway do what you enjoy most and ignore rank it really doesn't matter, there are people in the range of 50k+ that are way better than me. Just enjoy the game :) (heres my profile in case you guys are curious haha :D osu.ppy.sh/users/6772929

As a player who is steadily declining since 2019 despite of active playing (60k to 110k with 1.1k hours), I relate to this video a bit too much. The only difference being I had a "play for fun" phase before the practice skillset phase, and the game I switched to is a tablet game. There's a lot more resource to figure out what went wrong in your skillset that might cause a skill wall nowadays, I legit had no idea what went wrong, so I just force myself to play for fun by playing offline so I won't feel terrible for constantly shit missing at maps that's supposedly within my skill range. Hey at least I finally broke my skill wall a little bit recently, which is reading, and hit another new one, nerve control. I'm just happy that I'm seeing progress. Also went from a jump one trick to a stream player that shit miss at the easiest jump lol.

As a seasoned skill walled player, here's some advice that works for me, and may or may not work for you: reading: probably the most important skill set, as it is easily overlooked. If you can't see how you missed (over aim/under aim etc.), it's most likely a reading problem. Try to focus on every note if possible, especially on jumps. streaming: try to be as relax as possible. My streaming speed takes a big hit whenever i tense up. Also sitting posture matters, if my wrist is above elbow, both speed and stamina takes a big hit aiming: try different sens/area. I'm a mouse player but it's probably still applies for tablet. Even if it doesn't works out and you switched to the original settings, the experience still helps. Lower sens/larger area helps with big jumps, higher sens/smaller area helps with precision. Mindset: I can't say much other than "play for fun". If you're not having fun in some way (either from gaining ranks/skill, or enjoying the songs/maps etc.), you won't be playing the game for long. I've never force myself to do anything i don't like and that's why I'm still enjoying the game after 6 years Also know that most of your practice and experience will eventually helps you, sometimes unexpectedly. My low/high sens phase helps, at stated in aiming, "play for fun" phase helps me with high star & tech maps, and also aim control, speed practice improved my stamina, long stream somehow improved after switching back from ring index to middle index, learning nomod improved my HD reading as a HD onetrick, even playing other rhythm game solidify that reading is my biggest issue, so don't be discourage to try out new stuff. Edit: Also, take every advice with a grain of salt (including this one), something might works for other players, but not for you (even if they're a top player). If you don't feel it's working for you then just stop.

Playing consistently everyday is what fixed my skill wall. Playing at least an hour a day helps(an hour of PLAYING, not leaving the game open. I'd add up the time of the maps I played and made sure it all added up to at least an hour)

That's fully me. I registered 6 years ago, but truly i was started the osu in 2018 March. From 2018 March to the end in 2018 i was rapidly flying up in the ranking. In 2019 i stucked at 75k rank, i played on a potato pc and membrane keyboard and i was blamed my setup as my "stuckwall". After in 2020 i started working and i was had enough money to buy a newer pc, 144hz monitor and a mechanical keyboard. After these i ranked up again to 50k and slowly 45k rank, but after that my peak is just 40k in rankings. I played a lot of, atm i have 144k playcount and 1800 hours almost, and my rank is at 48k kek.

I am on a pretty similar situation around 25k for few months now, so I know how it feels, it's just pain that no one knows how to overcome. I kinda had the same reasons for ranking up as I also played in IVC1 ^-^ I guess good luck on your journey, may the wall crumble and lwt you pass! I know how this feels, I've been deranking in osu mania for a very long time. I just eventually gave up on trying to get my rank up, now I just play for fun, also trying to get better at 7 key. My goal originally was to get to rank 4999, but when I got close I found myself losing all motivation and now I'm all the way down to rank 6,542. Maybe I'll get there one day

ive hit so many 'skill walls' that im a professional demolitionist. i got stuck at rank 150k for 5 months. it took me 3 months to get my first 100pp then after that almost 1 1/2 years to get my first 200. got stuck at rank 80k for 6 months. then most recently i got stuck at 50k for almost a year and im just now increasing in rank again and getting my first 300 and my top play on through the fire and the flames 4xmiss for 350pp. all i can say is do whatever you feel like. play when you want to, take a break when you want to. dont feel forced to keep playing because after all it is just a game.
