I’ve seen exactly this happen to a super yacht. It’s much harder than anyone thinks to react when controls reverse.See “the backwards bicycle”,where someone attempts to learn how to ride a bike with the steering reversed.Still,this incident has made us a global laughing stock I’m afraid.

According to my friend who serves on board HMS Bangor this was caused by BAE systems fitting a solenoid the wrong way round on the other vessel. The captain ordered full ahead but got full reverse instead.......... As he put it " Oh well, Shore leave is shore leave! "

I have actually seen this happen to competent captains A,and bridge staff- software glitch in control system. Has happened on both naval ships and super yachts. But don’t know if that is cause here.

The senior does like being in the public eye when this happens.

Somewhere a contractor is shitting himself knowing that he wired the controls up wrong after that maintenance period and, not far away, is his supervisor thinking he should have double check his work.

Remember lads always keep lookouts posted! I guess even if it's a bright sunny day with calm water. I'd honestly like to know how this happened! Had it been completely foggy I'd be more understanding. Ship handaling is an art & not as easy as some think from a lic. Captain's perspective this was avoidable however as long as pencils come with erasers, accidents will happen. Hopefully only injuries were to egos & pride!

Followed by the likes of the Navigation Officer a new version of Sub Lieutenant Phillips, then screaming out after reserving into the other Mine Warfare Vessel, "Corrrrr", "Ooh, nasty...", "Oh lumme!", The Navy Lark, an old BBC's half-hour radio 2 sitcom (244 episodes including 5 specials, over 15 series), about life aboard a British Royal Navy frigate named HMS Troutbridge (a play on HMS Troubridge, a Royal Navy destroyer) based in HMNB Portsmouth. The show starred Leslie Phillips as Sub-Lieutenant (Sub Lt) Phillips, along with Jon Pertwee as scheming Chief Petty Officer (CPO) Pertwee, plus Stephen Murray as bemused Lieutenant / later Lieutenant Commander Murray ("Number One") and Ronnie Barker as Able Seaman "Fatso" Johnson too. HMS Chiddingfold was one of the ships promised to Ukraine, wasn't it? Looks like due to this "accident" Uk will be unable to hand over promised ships now, totally an accident, not that they could get through Bosphore anyway.
