HMV 101 type Gramophone. Well, what do you do on a cold dark wet November day? Well, when an HMV Gramophone is left on your doorstep for free a few weeks previous, you try to get it going! I do so love these portable HMV Gramophones. Let see if we can get this one going again after spending 40 + years in a loft.

I loved your video … great information. Now just one point of reference. A “gramophone” was the product name for machines made by Columbia. What you demonstrated here is a “victrola” the name established by the Victor Company. Edison used the term “phonograph.”

You are quite right! We here in the UK use the term gramophone much too freely maybe basically any spring wound machine that played 78 rpm records was called a gramophone here! Even my grandparents used to call their 1940s all-electric radiogram a gramophone as it played 78 rpm records! Hence it has stuck with me over the years so I thank you and stand corrected on this! I'm so glad you like me fiddling about with these HMV models in the video. Thanks for your super comment Kev.

Since it doesn’t have the auto start/stop it would date from 1927-1929. (The final 101 model from 1929-1931 added it.)

Many thanks for that like I say I'm no expert on these HMV's so that interesting thanks more a vintage radio / tv man myself. but I do love them. thanks, Kev.

And based on the design of the decal inside the lid I'm inclined to think it's from 1927 or 1928.

It's the best video i found about the gramophone so far...If possible i would really love if you could help me with a question about mine. Is there someway you could help me with a problem i'm having? I live in Brazil and i'm struggling to find someone to fix my gramophone, but if could give me an insight about what the problem might be, it would be amazing!

Hi. Thanks for your great video. I recently got one of these gramaphones which I love it. It works fine for 78 rpm records, but not for 33 rpm ones. I tried and it seems the speed changes. Do you think the problem is because of the needls that I use?or it is because of something else? Thanks a lot!

Never ever try to play a 33rmp or 45 rpm vinyl record on one of these machines! These are only designed for old Shelac 78rpm records with a steel needle you will just wreck your records if you try a more modern vinyl record as like a 33rpm or a 45 rpm. This machine can only play Shelac's old 78RPM Records ONLY! Hope that helps K.

I do not think the issue is with the spring, I do not think a spring is capable of sending an irregular pulse through the gears! The issue is with your governor. That also tells us why you cannot get the speed up. Mal-adjusted governors are much more evident in cylinder players because they lack the "dampening" effect of the heavy turntable platter. But that , I assure you, is where you will find your problem.

Great video! My dad was from Buckinghamshire and brought his over when he moved to the states in '79. Was wondering if you had any info on replacing the diaphragm. My player works pretty well, but the glass/mica is cracked. Thanks!

Sorry for the very late reply to your kind comment in the UK, you used to be able to buy new Mica on ebay for the HMV gramophones. Worth a look on there for sure. Thanks for your kind comment Kev.

beautiful machine, where do you find your new parts like a new spring? I found a really cheap Gramophone on eBay (cheap to seller, but with shipping I'm paying over $300 for one whose condition is questionable at best.) and want to be prepared for any replacement parts I might need.

Great video 😁 I recently found the model with the auto start/stop but it needs a replacement needle. Do you know what needles I would have to buy? Thanks!
@BramleyProductions
@BramleyProductions 2 года назад
Hi, thanks for your kind comment. You can buy Gramophone needles still today. I have brought the steel Gramophone Needles from ebay. They come in Soft Tone, Medium Tone, and Loud Tone. The difference is in the thickness of the needle. Remember, with the cheap steel needles; you really need to put a new one in for every side of the 78RPM Shellac record you play. You can also buy Bronze tone or Gold needles. Some of these will play a few records before they need to be changed. Hope that helps. These models and types are a super HMV Gramophone for sure. and still, work so well. Just search Steel gramophone needles on line and you are bound to turn some up. Thanks again Kev.

@@BramleyProductions Thanks for your quick reply! Turns out I actually found some hidden in the little draw! However, the little screw that holds the needle in place is missing. Not quite sure what to search to find a replacement if you had any suggestions? Thanks!

@@georgiamcclymont98 Hi there again I have seen HMV Soundbox Needle screws turn up on ebay while you are searching you might find any small knurled nut with the right thread might do as a temporary just very gentle try it. Also, they sometimes fall out and get stuck in the tin horn that goes around the base of the cabinet worth having a very gentle tilt and shake to see if it has fallen off and hence gone into the horn part but like I say they do turn up on ebay it should say on the backplate of you soundbox what number it is HMV 4 or HMV 5b say I think that needle screw fits them all. Kev.

@@BramleyProductions ........ Since I got it in approx 2016, I’ve been ‘ripped-off’ with ‘so-called’ electronics specialist, cost me a lot of money. (If I could meet them down a dark alleyway !!!!!!! ) I’ve got a Decca 103, there is something wrong with the electrics, I know. As when on-off switch is turned off......... it’s still on. Apart from that, it was working.... but now when I play the deck, I can faintly hear music but no actual sound....... which I’m guessing is an electric problem. Also got a Decca 100 and that’s got a mechanical auto changer problem
