Here’s yet another Dirty Rat AMV I just couldn’t resist doing. This is based on an idea I got a while back, but significantly altered. After finishing my Batfink music videos, I realized that there were enough villains that I could easily do a video for Dirty Rat if I wanted to. I looked back on the idea recently and thought about using Batfink villains, then out of nowhere I got the brilliant idea to use villains from other cartoons made during the same decade but focusing on Hugo as he is my favorite 60s cartoon villain. I’ve always had a soft spot for 60s animation. Something about their art styles always appealed to me. Once upon a time I thought things like Rocky and Bullwinkle or Yogi Bear and the Hanna-Barbera crew were the first cartoons ever made so I had respect for them. Even when I found out that wasn’t the case I still had respect for them because without them showing that animation has a place on television we wouldn’t have gotten the awesome cartoons of the 80s all the way through the 2010s. There are even some that I didn’t see as a kid but still enjoyed as an adult, and one I even loved. For a long time I was only familiar with George of the Jungle through the live-action movie, which is one of my favorite movies I have seen in theaters. I had no idea it was based on a cartoon, I was like “This has to be the best live-action movie based on a cartoon ever.” The cartoon turned out to be okay, it's not bad but it's not as funny as the movie. It's still one of my favorite 60s cartoons because of the supporting segments. Tom Slick is about a racer, and it's not only better than Wacky Races it even predates it by a year. But my favorite is Super Chicken, about a chicken who fights crime with his cowardly lion sidekick Fred. It has one of my favorite catchphrases ever, when Fred gets scared he is reminded "You knew the job was dangerous when you signed up for it." Both segments are great fun, and more than make up for the George portion of the show. You can see my bias for them as I featured 5 villains each from those 2 in this video.
But as much as I focused on them, I knew that I had to spotlight a few other series. I liked Underdog even if it was never a favorite but it had some great villains. As much as I liked the 2 main recurring villains, I also really liked the one shots with my favorite being Overcat. I had to include Dick Dastardly and Muttley as well as Dr. Zin because they represent two of my favorite Hanna-Barbera cartoons. I also threw in a show I never heard of until the internet called Super 6, which while a very mixed bag at its best is a very enjoyable super hero series. I checked it out because the hero Super Scuba had a mermaid sidekick, and I was not disappointed as they were the best characters but I loved some of the other episodes. I really hope that someday this series gets a revival because there is much potential. I even included my favorite George of the Jungle villain Dr. Chicago. One of the weaknesses about it is that most of the villains aren't memorable but he was fun. And just to bring in more variety I decided to use my favorite examples of television animation from the 50s and 70s as well. For the 50s Rocky and Bullwinkle is without a question the best as I feel that it's the cartoon that proved television animation can be just as respected as theatrical ones. For the 70s, good television animation was so scarce I decided to use my 2 favorite installments of Chuck Jones' Kipling trilogy. All in all this is easily one of my better and most-packed AMVs.
