In terms of insight and promoting films for your audience to buy, this is one of your best videos, pal 👍 The HMV premium label is a nice little UK set. My first buy was their release of The Shining as it has the extended cut, which I hadn't seen until that blu ray 👍

Enjoyed this video. I flogged a few unwanted films on eBay over the weekend and have now put some of the cash towards a selection of these. Went for two of your recommendations in Jeremiah Johnson and Casablanca (I am that person that's never seen it) as well as a much needed upgrade of Full Metal Jacket and The Yakuza. This will be my first time dipping into the HMV collection so I'm looking forward to them arriving now. Keep up the good work because you've got a new viewer in me.

Nice one Eliot. I picked up a bunch of HMV Premium Collections a while ago running through the crime movies they had for #34-37 so great to hear you recommend Point Blank and White Heat too. I don’t know why it was released so early in the collection but Gremlins 2 is #10 and still a laugh riot in my book!

Barry Lyndon is one of my Favs of all time too and my favourite Kubrick. Recently bought a Multiregion 4K Blu Ray player and The Criterion Collection Barry Lyndon. Keep up the superb vids👍🏼

These releases look great. Can't beat those prices. Back in the 90s I spent about $40 ea. for Point Blank, Casablanca and White Heat on laserdisc. I found a couple blu-ray imports at a thrift shop yesterday. Now I just need an all region player. :)

I had most of the ones I wanted but managed to get the two Hammer Dracula films in the promo. ‘Demon seed’ with Julie Christie seems to be out of stock everywhere - not sure if it even made it into the 2 for £15 as seemed to be out of stock before the promo even started

Fantastic to see you do some premium collection recommendations. Great shout for the wrong man a fantastic film. Question for you is there any different between the premium Barry Lyndon and the original boxset release? Keep the vids coming mate enjoying all the content.

Barry Lyndon and McCabe & Mrs Miller are two of my favourites! I also picked up Gun Crazy, On Dangerous Ground, and 2 I've never seen before, Demon Seed & Village of the Damned. There are so many others i wanted but you have to draw the line somewhere!

My collection in addition to some of the ones you mentioned are Donnie Brasco, Chinatown, Public Enemy, Little Caesar, The Maltese Falcon, The Big Sleep, To Have and Have Not, Out of the Past, On Dangerous Ground, Bad Day at Black Rock and The Haunting. I would have liked to have seen some of these titles in the list.

Some great recomendations. They are difficult to optain here in Denmark. I have a couple. House of Wax The Haunting The Thing From Another World Village of the Damned Dracula AD 1972 The Satanic Rites of Dracula I could easily buy alot more 😀 In regards to The Wrong Man, I agree with you Elliott, a underrated Hitchcock film. I think alot of people go to North By Northwest when it comes to Hitchcocks "falsely accused" films, which I can understand because it is an amazing film, but you should not cheat yourself off The Wrong Man. The other Hitchcock films in the collection are great aswell and I highly recommend them.

Picked up Treasure of Sierra Madre and Badlands. I wanted to get more but I'm saving my money for a big criterion haul!

For whatever reason, The Wrong Man is one of just a few American Hitchcock films I haven't seen. Now I gotta see it.

Hi Elliot, I have a few titles from the HMV Premium Collection and have been very happy with them, as I think you mentioned we go seem to get a lot of the Warner Archive stuff, although some of the recent announcements seem to indicate we are also getting the new Paramount Presents titles too, i.e. Fatal Attraction and Pretty in Pink etc. My only quibble is that they don’t specify anything about the transfer used, and yesterday I picked up Robin and Marian and it seems to be using an old master rather than the recent Sony one used for the US release? Anyway, keep up the good work!! Dean

Hi! All the movies that you show fascinate me (except Mrs. Miniver, but I'll try to get it). And yes, I really love Barry Lyndon too, although in my case it is not my favorite movie of all time, but it is from Kubrick's filmography.

Great video! Martin Scorsese studied The Wrong Man for Taxi Driver and you can tell, beyond the fact that both films were scored by Bernard Herrmann.

I had been put off from the HMV premium collection because of the price previously, and so only had one in my collection- which was Night Moves with Gene Hackman, as I am a massive fan of Hackman. This sale has meant I can finally add to my single collection, and so far I have brought 6 - those being Scarecrow, The last picture show, Barry Lyndon, 1984, Harper and The drowning pool. I’m very much looking forward to watching them and perhaps getting point blank and white heat after hearing your thoughts about them.

HMV is sadly (as of now) not shipping outside of UK. :( So, "only" Arrow, Eureka, 88-films, Secon Sight Films, 101 Films, Zoom and Amazon left for poor Czech(ian) me.

These are so awesome! If only HMV shipped to the US. Hopefully in the future they will be able to ship overseas.

Do these HMV Premium Collection blu-rays have better image and sound quality than the simple blu-ray version ? Does this Barry Lyndon version come close to Criterion quality? My problem with Criterion would be the lack of subtitles, since I'm from Brazil, if you could help me I'd appreciate it, your videos are interesting...

I ordered 4 movies from this His Masters Voice sale, I would have ordered more but a.) Camp Arrow wiped me out and b.) I bought a quarter scale Ms PacMan arcade cabinet, which was money very well spent in my book.

Just put a bunch of movies in my basket... Now i see they dont dispatch to Belgium... So sad... Was so happy to get "The Wrong Man" and "Out of the Past" oh well.

My favourite within this collection are Bad day at black rock and The Hidden. I’m really hoping for Eyes wide shut at some point. Although wondering if a lot of the Kubrick films will end up getting 4k release (probably eyes wide shut and Lolita being the exception!)

£7.50 is a cool price especially as on the older releases you got a digital copy of the film (which you can still redeem on google play)

Not sure if you have it but I recommend Scarecrow. I’ve said it before and i stand by it but the more I think about it the more i think it’s a masterpiece. I recently picked up Seven Days in May. One of Burt Lancasters best.

You're 100% right about Mrs. Miniver being a grossly underrated film. I almost NEVER hear it being mentioned when people talk about their favourite WWII films. Edited to add: if I'm remembering correctly, that is the same Casablanca booklet that came in the box set that was released in 2008 in North America. I could be wrong, but I think that's the same one.

I am such a sucker for slipcases, it is such a shame these don't ship to the US because I would HAVE to buy them up! The Warner Archives releases of a lot of these films just do not compare!

The ones porting warner archive discs are definitely region free. Need to get Mrs miniver and jeremiah johnson.

No HMV in Australia anymore (that I'm aware of) ... But these look nice. I have a few of those from the Warner Archive US titles as you mentioned (and some from Kino Lorber) but they are quite ugly skinny standard Blu Ray cases and don't look as nice as these ones. Obviously the disk contents are the most important thing but I do love a good case, slipcover and booklet/postcards or other goodies. Tempting to upgrade some of those Warner Archive titles for the better packaging but that would be.... A tad extravagant... (Even for me!) given the disk contents are the same.... But... Hitchcock, Flynn, Bogart, Cagney, Argonauts.... You're definitely speaking my language... All essentials to delve into! Yet to watch Barry Lyndon but it's certainly on my list... (Very large list) of must see titles.....

The best value releases are probably Casablanca and The Ten Commandments, which are 3 disc releases. Or in terms of film length, The Ten Commandments and Grand Prix, and some are double film sets like House of Wax. Some titles can feel like lesser value for being barebones compared to the releases with documentaries and commentaries, but I researched and The Thing from Another World, King Creole, Wolfen, Innocent Blood, Judgment Night, Night Moves, Key Largo are all only available in SD on UK VOD platforms - so the disc is the only option. Casablanca isn't the only titles with a booklet though - A Streetcar Named Desire and Lost Horizon both have ones too (although none of the other Capras seem to.) Definitely better than just having artcards, but often these studio produced booklets will have no credited author, have brief biographies and trivia but otherwise packed with images and with less of the critical insight. Some Premium Collection releases have stronger alternatives though - the 4K UHD of The Shining, Pet Sematary and Mr Smith Goes to Washington, Badlands and sex, lies & videotape (Criterion), the Shaft 3 film collection that's about to come out, and in the US and Germany Ultimate Gangsters Collection: Classics includes those three gangster films, but with the addition of The Petrified Forest. The Haunting, some of the Draculas, the Kubricks, Little Shop of Horrors, Doctor Zhivago, Forbidden Planet have individual releases outside of the collection. Some of the 'exclusive' titles to the Premium Collection include Krull (released by Mill Creek not Sony in the US, in a barebones edition), Casualties of War (the UK got it a year before the US, although the German release includes the extended cut), The Last Picture Show (only in the BBS boxset in the US), My Own Private Idaho (barebones disc, but the compression is supposedly stronger than Criterion's, and the extras can be found easily on EIV's two disc DVD.) Chinatown and Marathon Man both add back the extras compared to the individual releases, and Full Metal Jacket adds Stanley Kubrick's Boxes, but A Scanner Darkly subtracts a featurette.

Where I am slightly confused with the Premium collection Barry Lyndon is the aspect ratio. On the packaging it say 16:9, which is 1.78.1 but it also says 1.85.1 which is Academy ratio. Now on the HMV website it says 178.1, which is also I believe the Criterion version. Of course, the original shown in cinema's was 1.66.1 and Stanley Kubrick didn't want the film to be shown in 1.85.1, though I would accept 1.78'ish. I can't say that I am that impressed with the picture quality, it does look quite soft and that is before we even get to the scenes shot with the Zeiss 50mm f/0.7 and 35mm f/0.7 (which were design to photograph the dark side of the moon).

I bought wolfen and the witches as they are classics and those original posters are phenomenal works of art. Shame they are both region b Europe exclusives. Worth importing

All Warner Brothers Blu-Rays are region free. The reason that Certs are on the front/back/ spine and also the disc is because it is the LAW in the U.K. Because if you sell to an underage person you can get fined £5,000 and or face 6 months in prison. The number of time I had to sit through the B.B.F.C. training video, so often that we could say the script before the actors.

And all Winners in your Top Ten...nice to "Jeremiah Johnson" and the shout-out to John Boorman, too (I have to re-visit "Zardoz" -- with some trepidation for SFX...which were interesting/baffling/mind-boggling seeing in the theater for original run).

Just picked up Barry Lyndon (among others). No sign of us getting the criterion in the UK, and I’m assuming a 4K UHD isn’t on the horizon for this.

Elliot, You are a star. Had no idea about their sales. Wanted replace some of my snap case dvds with Blu ray so ordered, Dolores Claiborne, New Jack City and Body Heat. As new films, Night Moves and 2010 The Year We Made a contact. Also I ordered Wolfen on Blu ray.I have its DVD I would recommend the film. Last month, I ordered innocent blood on hmv premium collection as well. This film has never been released on dvd in the UK ( i think ) so i still have US snapcase DVD. I wanted to get Barry Lindon but I wasn't sure after you said the Criterion edition is better. .Is it worth buying it ? I love the film. its score is amazing

A lot of good stuff here, Elliot! ....Just curious, but how many versions of Barry Lyndon do you have?.... I love Jason and the Argonauts! Such a Harryhausen classic. My two favorite scenes are the one with Talos and the one with the fighting skeletons....And Point Blank is my favorite Lee Marvin film. A gritty classic.... And I also love Mrs. Miniver. Interesting fact: When I was reading a Greer Garson biography a while back, I found out that Greer Garson actually married the young man who played her oldest son in the movie!.... And like you, Altman is in my top 5 directors. My faves of his are Nashville, 3 Women, A Wedding, and Thieves Like Us. Great video!

If they're Warner then they're region free. In fact most of these titles are region free, if not all A lot of the Warner titles have Warner Archive releases and are usually a lot cheaper. The only advantage you get is the slipcase and the artcards/poster There are about 120 in the collection and they don't really ever go out of print as they're studio titles There are times where there aren't too many releases. There are a lot of forthcoming ones because they're putting out the Paramount Presents titles While most of these are the only available Blu-ray releases of these in the UK, there are some that have had previous releases Performance is different as they fixed the audio that was changed for the US release

McCabe & Mrs. Miller forms part of my theory that 1971 was cinema's greatest year. And by theory I mean poorly thought through opinion that would probably fall apart when challenged.

Love Altman, but I can't stand McCabe & Mrs. Miller. I find Beatty an utterly unengaging actor. That's something he's acknowledged himself, and is perhaps due to the claim that he's a psychopath. For me, the film's redeeming feature is the use of Leonard Cohen's music in the soundtrack.
