If you pay attention to the model railroad hobby magazines, you have probably heard of Jim Dias and his amazing HO Scale layout that depicts the Western Pacific Railroad in the Spring of 1938.
In this layout tour, we take a close look at Jim's layout, including his rendition of the world-famous Keddie Wye!
It's one part history lesson, one part modeling, and entirely cool!

Jim, Thank you for building one of the BEST model railroads I’ve ever seen!

We live at Union Pacific milepost 305 on the Canyon Sub where the old Layman Siding used to be. Passenger trains used to stop here and passengers would walk across a suspension bridge to take a meal at Camp Layman. We are about 5 miles west of Blairsden which is modeled on this layout. Beautiful rendering of the country along the WP Feather River Route. Rail fans can have a heyday starting at the Portola Yard and Railroad Museum, going west along the Middle Fork of the Feather River, around the Williams Loop, across the Keddie Wye and down the Feather River Canyon. Thank you for sharing this layout which is a great depiction of a wonderful area in its heyday.

What a superb rendition of the WP and California logging. Love the Keddie Wye. Wow. Cool touches as well -- the tree growing through the roof, the guy riding under an umbrella on the shay's tender. Wonderful sense of humor, Jim, incorporated into your railroad. Scenery and buildings are fantastic. Hats off to you. Good good stuff.

As I’m working on my 1910-1935 layout I can’t help but be in awe of your detailed rolling stock and motive power. And the layout itself is something to feel accomplished of. It’ll likely take me years to finish my layout and the current home I’m in plan to eventually one day hopefully turn it into a railroad club and further model the GCL.

Wonderful layout ! I enjoyed the detailing and operations, but especially the history around the Kedie area. I lived in Paradise and would take my young son up the canyon to Portola to visit the museum and have pizza nearby. On the way back each time, we would stop at Kedie and explore in the area of the main siding and wonder what was there during the heyday of the WP. Now I can almost see it. Thanks for sharing.

I think this just might be my favorite layout tour yet! There were some beautiful scenery and structures here. My only dislikes stemmed from my pet peeves, such as chuffs not being synchronized with drivers, inconsistent coupler height (thank Dan for instilling that in me), and some track being right up to the edge of the fascia. But like I said, those are just my pet peeves and not a complaint about the layout.

@tsgmultimedia
@tsgmultimedia 6 лет назад
You know, I didn't really ask him that. I know that for other modelers with "completed" layouts such as this, they always find something to work on, whether it be upgrading structures or building new rolling stock... There's always something else to build, if even for a display case.

@tsgmultimedia 2 года назад
Never heard of a Shea. What is it?
@wadepenley7380
@wadepenley7380 2 года назад
@@tsgmultimedia I may have spelled it wrong. It's a steam locomotive that was used primarily for logging. It doesn't have large drive wheels or drive rods like normal steam locomotives. It has pistons that spin a drive shaft that turns the wheels on the front and rear trucks. It was used for logging because it could take sharp curves that a conventional steam locomotive can't take. It's truck arrangements worked almost like the trucks on a diesel engine of today. I hope that was helpful. Thank you for asking. Keep up the good work yall and may your railway always stay busy.

I am hardly impressed when I see a layout featured that has swathes of incomplete or non-existent scenery or stand in structures. Show me your layout, when it is closer to done or at least don't show what has yet to be done; unless you are showing such sections to make a point or teach something.
