Hobart Stickmate 160i Welder Unboxing and test
Hello all and welcome back to the channel, for this video I am unboxing our new Hobart Stickmate 160i Stick welder. First off I need to apologize for the video filming, I am using a lens I rarely use outside of photography and had a hard time setting up and judging height/angles etc. SO this video there are a allot of head getting cut.....mine. regardless This vide features the new welder, the packaging, price point in the USA and a very amateur demonstration.
I hope that you enjoy the video, find it informative and or will at least feel inclined to share. I have been working like crazy forging trying to get ready for these upcoming shows, Hope everyone is doing well. I have some ideas floating around and will try to get another content vid out to you all soon with some forging and blacksmithing.
Thank you all
Chris

That's a good quality welder. Ideal for every welder: Enthusiast, hobbyist, fabricator, entry level, advanced and licensed professional. HOBART is high performance. Cheers!

I've been looking at the 160i as a backup welder. Nice video

I love stick welding mate , I have m.i.g tig and oxy welding gear but my first choice is stick . I just finished building my power hammer using only a stick welder . Don"t beat your self up to much about your welds once you get use to the welder you won't need any thing Elles. Cheers .And Happy Welding . :)

Thank you. I can say since the posting of this video the machine really likes 6013. With practice it's proven to be pretty consistent with different rods and thickness.

Warts and all review warts mainly your technique 😊 6013 for general purpose better check polarity for electrodes being used keep them coming 👍

That's gotta be better than the chinesium "M.I.G." welder I bought for $75, when unboxed, turned out to be a stick welder, only 4 selections for the current, 90, 110, 130, and 160. Already replaced the ground clamp and the rod holder, it does have "quick" connections, and it does weld. And like you, been a long time since I stick welded, so....lots of grinding wheels gonna get worn out😛😁. One thing my Dad reminded me of is that the direction of the rod (towards or away from travel direction) can make a huge difference.

Very true, lol thank you for commenting. I think our old tombstone was a dial selection but it went from a low to pretty high range in 10 amp increments.

@@wrotiron How well does the machine work on 120? I fully understand it will run super cold and slow on 120 but can a guy get by with this setup? Thanks
@wrotiron
@wrotiron 2 года назад
@@thecordlesscarpenter7956 it actually runs really well. With 6011 it's smooth and the arc start isn't too sticky. A root weld side to side with a bit of a pull back it crusts nice and the slag flakes off at about 1/3 power. If course that really depends on the speed your moving. For basic home repairs it will work just fine with a heavy enough extension cord and a 20 amp breaker I've never tripped it in what little I've done.

These smaller machines are great. Just use good quality electrodes and it should be fine. My tiny Miller burns hard facing rod better than my giant cracker jack box did.

When you say 110 amps is that what it’s drawing from the circuit breaker panel? What amperage is circuit breaker supplying the 220v?

just picked one up today for $389, bought a $1200 generator last week from them so maybe they wanted to give me a discount, or it was just my military ID that discounted everything XD

I need help with purchasing correct size generator for my welder but nothing over the top ,, tia Hobart Stickmate 160i It can run off 110,115,120v or 220,230,240v input power , •120v = 20-80amps (65amps @20%) •240v = 20-160amps (160amps @30%) •Minimum generator power required = 2500watts •Minimum welding amps = 20amps •Maximum welding amps = 160amps ,

Not sure that it will help much but my Father tan a predator brand generator with electric start from harbor freight for almost 3 years with no issues. He initially purchased the generator for around $600

Chinese made are for cheap and of course anything that’s cheap is made quickly without care. If it was Japanese made… that would be a different story. Lol

Too many non-welders making videos about welding machines' performances without enough knowledge to do so. What is the open circuit voltage? How does it perform with 6010 and 7018 rods? How does its performance compare between 115 to 220 voltage use? How do the inside components look? What's the duty cycle at different amperages? ...... This video is comparable to a taxi cab driver doing an informative video on brain surgery equipment.

I appreciate your feedback. In my 20 plus years as a structural welder with 5 years of that being sterile stainless welding on pressurized x-ray tubing for asterile septic applications never found it prudent to get too much into stick welding nor have I had to I openly admit in this video that I do not have or possess much of the knowledge there's a bunch of other videos out there that are for that purpose. To call me a non welder is hurtful I'll give you that but I do nevertheless appreciate your view and also appreciate you taking the time to write out your comment I will say this machine works exceedingly well with 6011 at about 90 amps on 1/4 inch plate and for the average Joe backyard welder who is looking to do welding repairs on their mower or garden fence all those logistics that you just fore mentioned are useless to the average Joe so I guess you could say an average Joe just made a video for average Joe's.

I don't recall him making a claim to be a welding professor or that this was a welding tutorial. It was his honest review of the welder, which I appreciate. I am interested in seeing how someone like myself that wants to give it a try does with equipment that I am thinking about buying. Keep up the videos, they are appreciated!
