In this Hobby Cheating Tutorial, I take you through my technique for creating faux wood grain. Often models have areas that are meant to be wood, but lack any definition in the sculpt, this technique allows you to create that realistic wood grain through the application of simple techniques. Hope you enjoy!

This is what I needed to know for one of my Gunpla kits. Thanks for sharing it!

Tried this method with skin tones as undershade, because I had those still on the pallet and they worked fine as well. Which makes sense because skin tones can be great highlights for wood or browns in general.

Can you turn your end up a little so I can hear you better. Your intro music is way loud and then I can hardly hear your voice. Other vids are fine. Anyway, It's all about layers. I use the white and black to highlight and shade grain. I also use green, yellow and red ink when doing most of my woods sims. I love knots...making them is fun stuff. I start off with white primmer and darker thin base. So many ways to make good wood. Thanks for sharing...

Yep, it's fun to paint as there is so much you can do and so many other colors you can work in. Like stone and other natural things, you can really just go nuts.

Great video - sorry it took 6 years to comment. I really had to think about my question. I noticed that I liked the contrast between the matte and the more glossy finish on your example here - specifically in imagining that as an effect of weapon wood. Most weapons would have been glossy when new, but the surfaces that get handled become flat, or very matte. So, would you consider wet blending or stippling semigloss (or the like) to create a gradation that illustrates wear OR since I have been warned NOT to do this as people tend not to like matte up against gloss on the same surface, is this something you would simulate with illustration techniques? Sort of like NMM, but for finished wood.

You can use a satin, I think that works, you never really want to go all the way to gloss.

Have been trying to figure out, how would you use this technique if you want to get a red lacquer finish for the wood?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 3 года назад
I'd probably do the whole process, then do a thin red glaze over the top.

Has your way of doing faux wood grain changed over the last 4 years?

Not really same basic tactic, though I should redo this video.

That wood ink does look really good. Do you have any ideas for more of a blond wood effect?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 7 лет назад
Yep, when you do the undershading, mix a little ivory or bone in with your grey and really warm and lighten it up. You will then get a very nice light wood color in the end.

Hey Vince, how does White Sands compare to Mojave White? I normally use Menoth White Highlight for my off white, ivory colours, I'm just wondering if it's worth me getting some Scale goodness on my next order.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 6 лет назад
White sands is more white and bright than Mohave. Mohave is a creamier, more yellow color. both are quite useful but they aren't THAT far apart.
@Mikey__R

Thanks Vince. It sounds like White Sands could be approximated with regular White plus some Mojave White. And Mojave White isn't that far from Menoth White. I might save my pennies.

@Vince, do you have a vid for just painting wood? On a model that has grain? I know you just can use basecoat and Inktensity, but I've played with other techniques like airbrushing different colors and then doing a pale wash over it (saw in a tutorial) and wanted to know more about different techniques.

Yep, I have a video on Rich Sylvaneth Wood tones. You can find it here - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RLHsE7SgZyc.html&index=50&list=PLcdsbwBroEmD2fNEJhcju6PD7qRmoo04Y

Great video! For sylvaneth, with the wooden portion of their bodies being more humanoid in shape, would you do anything different and/or other tips & tricks to try?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 7 лет назад
Sure you could use the same tricks on them (though you can also accomplish it quicker since you have texture with a little drybrush and black wash undershading first, then just build up a few lines like I did here to reinforce the effect and use the wood over the top. Hope that helps.

Vince, i have horrible news. That intense wood ink that you love so much actually says "INK-tense wood" I was disappointed too but I just got the set.
