As far as small grain sands go, I've found that you can get a sand with a grain about 1/4 the size of Woodland Scenics fine talus at the craft store. The colored sand for filling jars is nice and fine, and frankly it's dirt cheap if you have a big chain craft store nearby (40% off coupon ftw).

For ultra-fine sand you can also use soda
@Holyganker
@Holyganker 5 лет назад
I like to use two part putty. Way better control, working time, and clean-up. Also, I use baking soda sand. One day I decided to see if brown dye would work for dying baking soda. OMG does it work! Perfectly scaled down sand. Just place a bunch of BS in a bowl and season to taste with brown permanent ink. Mix well, let it dry completely then break up as desired. You WILL be amazed! Thanks for another great vid vince.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 5 лет назад
Good notes, I have never liked 2-Part putty for this purpose, but I understand why other people like it. The brown ink makes total sense.

So simple, yet so nice. Great vid, thanks dude. Idea for an episode, something about paints gone bad, how to fix and when to throw away. Have had some good bad and ugly experiences on "new" bottles. Some can be salvaged, some not so much.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 5 лет назад
Sure, the only challenge is I would have to let some paints go bad. .. ;) (Good idea though for sure.)

So...peanut butter would work as a replacement for Vallejo Desert Sand? Add sugar for Dessert sand? Yeah, that's a Vince-style laffy taffy pun for free.

I have been using vallejo's pumice paste and like how it looks. The grain size looks appropriate the paste holds props well without glue.

@Wijkert

Maybe good to add that if you buy a new pot of Vallejo Earth Texture Desert Sand (26.217) the paste is much thinner. This means that when building op your base you may need a smoother foundation of cork (and not a step pattern), because the thin paste will conform to the shape of the cork too much to get a smooth result. Either that, or build up the layers of paste.
@chestnut493
@chestnut493 5 лет назад
So to stick a mini (with flat/level feet) on it, I guess you need to pin then fill in the void(s) with more sand paste and repaint?? Or do you press the feet into the sand while its wet and make some footprints for the model to stick to later?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 5 лет назад
The latter. In this case, this was for a ghost with a tiny connection point, so I didn't need to worry about it, but if the mini had fet, yes, when it was wet, I would just press it in to set up the location, then good to go.

@@VinceVenturella When I try this it’s way too sticky and ends up just creating weird peaks on the sand instead, is there any trick to it?

Hey Vince! Do you have any recommendations on how to do cave bases (for Gloomspite)? Aside from doing some stalagmites and mushrooms, I’m sort of stuck on how to do the floor surface. I’m going to try roughing up some cork and covering it in PVA to simulate that polished/worn stone look and see if that works, but I would love to know if you have any ideas.

@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 5 лет назад
Not really, just make sure the chariot will actually fit, but beyond that all the same rules apply. :)

My son has been asking me to work out salt pan bases for his dark eldar - drukhari, whatever. I’ve been testing actual salt, baking soda, fine sand, even some snow techniques, but haven’t yet hit on a recipe i like. Will you cover that at all next week? As ever, really love everything you share! Oh: i’m supposed to remind you about a dry-brushing w/ metallics vid. Thanks!
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 5 лет назад
Next week will just be painting, but baking soda can certainly be a good replacement if you don't have the paste. That's on the list, I will make sure to get to it sometime. ;)

Hi Vince, I am planning to make tropical beach water bases for my pirate ogres. This cork + vallejo desert sand seems like a good way to start. Maybe the ogres are standing close to the water line or wading in shallow water. Planning to add coral and other bits to the part that is below water. I am going to use resin water from EK and I have ordered containment molds from Greenstuffworld. Any thoughts or tips are welcome.

I was planning on doing something related to the salt flats in Hysh with my terrorgeist. I really want to figure out how to make it look like sand is pouring out of its crevices between bones realistically. Like its body is corroded with the sand and as it moves it pours out from its mouth and ribs into realistic piles on the base like an old hour glass. Any tips would be appreciated Vince. Thank you.
@VinceVenturella

I will tell you how I have done it when I did it on a project. I stretched a little tiny piece of syran wrap and glued it in place on both sides. Then I coat it in a quick water/PVA mixture to harden (and maybe a gloss varnish depending on size). I then coat it in some paste used here and drop a little of the fine grain sand you see around the bottom of the "pour." Hope that helps.

Question if you where to do a flesh eater courts base with the large dragon is crawling down on towards the ground, on columns, statues and maybe broken trees, what material would you use? Personally i am thinking that perhaps the pillars use for wedding cakes might be useful here. Cut it up a bit to make it looked like the dragon´s claws was crushing the marble or at least digging its claws into it. And maybe for extra effect use a bit of the rough miliput around it (some might suggest using miliput paste, but have never been able to make it, when ever i try mixing it with water all i get is slippery miliput and miliput colored water.) However the statues i have no idea. The trees maybe go out into natur and pick some fallen branches.. but i don´t know..
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 5 лет назад
That's a big question, but sure. So let me move through this. 1) Columns: Wedding cake columns, Arcane Ruins, the new Terrain coming. 2) Yes, you should integrate them some way and have broken rocks, you will want it very broken up and integrated. 3) Milliput White is your key, I have done lots of bases with it, it's great for basing. 4) Sticks - Sure, or Dead Wood from Woodland Scenics. 5) Statues - The new terrain is a good bet, or you can just use models like Liberators, and you can paint them as statues. Hope that all helps.

How do you feel about baking soda as sand on desert bases? Still to big on the grain?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 5 лет назад
No, I think it's okay, I have just never loved the baking soda if it bonds because of additional layers on top. It can go the opposite way if you're not careful with glue or other paint.
@alexanderz8052
@alexanderz8052 5 лет назад
@@VinceVenturella ah okay that makes sense. Well I put some acrylic effect paste on the base begore putting on the soda and it stuck to that so it never made contact with glue. So I never came into contact with that Problem. Hadnt thought of that actually so thanks for pointing it out
