This is really helpful. I've always found skin to be among the most challenging parts of a mini to paint because you don't have hard edges between the color transitions. It really requires you to work on your blending skills. I like that challenge, and I like when skin turns out well, but I often have a hard time with the technical aspects of getting a believable look. This is such a great guide to help with that--thanks.

It's good to see you using Reaper paints! I know you've used most if not all of the mini paints on the market, but when I don't see Reaper featured in most of your videos, I wonder if I'm using sub-par paints. I will say, they're the only paints I have any real experience with and I have fun when I paint, so I'm happy with them :)

I think this will help me with the project I'm working on. Thanks as always for putting up this awesome tutorials! Two things I always struggle with and maybe stuff for future videos : 1. How to get rid of mold lines in tiny spaces. Like one running along the line of a segmented cable (I look at you Space Marines) or or a line of spikes or small horns etc. 2. Light and shadows on more or less vertical parts (cylinders) of a miniature. More on a display painting level. How to distribute the lights to make it look interesting. Wyrds Forgotten Marshall is a good example. His coat has this very big vertical folds. And his arms and legs are very static vertical cylinders with only small folds to play with.

Possibly stupid question: In HC 391 you say glaze with pure pigments avoid white or paint with a large white component per brightness and pigment size. Maybe that explains why viewed up close most of my minis have a skin disease. However, in HC 233 (Pale Caucasian Flesh Tones), the Gothic Crimson/Warrior Flesh combo and (even more) the Warrior Flesh, Moon Ray and Glacier Blue combo look like they have a lot of white, and they clearly work. What am I missing here? Is a medium instead of water more important when glazing with lighter paints? I would like to know what I am doing wrong before diving into the next batch. Thanks
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 8 месяцев назад
Well, glazing lighter colors can be done. It’s just much harder. If you use lighter flesh tones, as opposed to lighter whites, those other pigments will help smooth the process

Amazing, it has more pink than pale, white-ish, colour and still looks pale skin. My pale skins often look like masks or too much makeup...probably too much white and not enough red/pink. This should also help with the "chalkiness" of white that I have.

Hello Vince, I found your channel through the recommendation of Atom at Tabletop Minions and quickly found this series. I've started at your first video and have made it maybe 15 in. I just wanted to say that I appreciate all of the time and effort you've put into teaching new people like me how to paint efficiently. I'm not sure if you've covered this (I'm sure you have somewhere), but how do you overcome that apprehension of just painting your first mini? I'm at that stage where I have all the supplies needed to start, minis assembled, zenithal primed, but I just keep thinking I need to watch one more vod before I begin putting paint on the mini. Thanks for everything you're doing for the community!
@j453
@j453 4 года назад
You allready have put paint on the mini. You gave it the zenethil. But, one thing that I will say that helped me is knowing that a quick dip in some simple green and a gentle toothbrush scrubbing can reset that mini back to the primer. Easy peasy lemon squeezy
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 года назад
I don't know that I have covered it specifically, but here is my best advice. This first mini doesn't matter. That sounds strange, but here is what I mean. Your 5th mini will be better than your 1st, and your 10th better than that. and your 100th better than that and your 1000th will be recognizably different. The only thing that will get you to that point on the 1000th mini is taking the step. You don't get better by thinking about things, you get better by doing and failing and learning. My best advice is start now, the sooner you start, the sooner you start learning. :)

As i'm rather limited at the moment by the paints I have, what Citadel paints would you use to achieve a similar effect on a model? Love the look of the elf by the way, skin turned out suuuper nice, (hoping to use it on a realm of shadow slaves to darkness army) hope your competition went well ^.^
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 года назад
Well, the competition never happened sadly, as GD was cancelled. :) - That being said, I couldn't tell you exactly the GW colors, I don't really use them so don't know them, but you would want to run the same gamut of colors I did here, a deeper purple/brown, something like Bugman's glow, a mid-tone skin tone, a pale flesh and some kind of pale blue-white.

Great video Vince! Any tips for a neutral color to start out with in the Vallejo or Citadel range? If you don't have an airbrush, better to skip the "hull-red" step or drybrush it on from below?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 года назад
Any mid-tone flesh tone will work honestly, you could kind of close your eyes and pick anything in the middle range and it would work fine (Beige Red for example from Vallejo would be fine). As to the hull red. you wouldn't want to drybrush from below, as that will hit the highest points, what you are aiming for is to get it in the low areas. So you could always just apply a few thin layers from below with brush.

Say, since we are on the topic of skin: I got the AK Interactive Skin Ink and I don't really know what to do with it. It seems to be pretty much red. Did you have any experience with that? The Vallejo Skin Ink looks similar and you might have experience with that one?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 года назад
Haven't used that one, I have the Vallejo skin one as well. I don't find much use for that. I basically use magenta and red inks in general for tone, or paints with more magenta or red/purple tone. That being said, they could certainly be useful, they are used for adding in that red color you see me utilize here and in the recent ruddy dwarf skin video.

The miniature looks amazing! How did you paint the light and shadow on the base to get that effect?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 года назад
So it was a fun process, I didn't make a video on it but it's a very simple process, it's really just wet blending from ice yellow, through flesh tone, through magenta and into blue/black (payne's grey). It's just quick wet blending and then reinforcing the light with the deep shadow lines in the recesses and light highlights on the edge of the stone.
@banzaibart81

Great process, results and tutorial. When I try to glaze with light, pale tones it turns out rather chalky. What can I improve?
@creddox
@creddox 4 года назад
I think you'd have two options: use more medium (e.g. glaze medium) or make use of underpainting. For me, underpainting gives the better result and can be used in other techniques (such as sketch style). The Hobby Cheating episode on glazing covers that in action if you want to see it.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 года назад
Yep, as Christian said, check out the glazing video, I tackle this pretty directly. One of the solutions is to avoid glazing with pale colors. Just apply it more strongly over a larger area than you intend it to fill, then glaze down the more transparent darker colors. (you saw me do part of that here with the middle steps). The other options is adding medium, satin varnish or similar mixing elements.

I'm not sure if you can get Warcolours in that way right now as they are in a lockdown in the home country and you can only get them direct from the source. I have no experience with AK Gen 3 yet, I will once they are more widely available. That being said. If I was going to carry a second range, my first pick would be something like Vallejo, it's used in a lot of videos by a lot of painters and has a quite broad range and appeal. Just a thought FWIW.
