In this Hobby Cheating Tutorial, I take you through a simple method to do quick brocade, freehand patterns on cloth such as robes and cloaks. It's fast and easy visual confusion that can both make large flat spaces more exciting and ease the need for ultra smooth blends. Hope you enjoy!

See, this is a great idea. And all it really takes it jsut the idea and giving the courage to try. It is a great way to make those chaos warrios (or anything) more visually appealing. If only the chaos warrriors were a bit more dynamic.

First time commenter. I'm more of a terrain guy but have been needing minis that aren't plain plastic, since that looks like garbage on finished terrain. Your channel is great, man. I've always struggled with 28mm minis for painting (honestly any scale - terrain is much more forgiving usually), but your tricks have helped immeasurably. You're doing good things :) So on to my actual question haha - for this application, are you diluting the flow aid before mixing with the paint, or are you using it at full strength? Thanks !!!
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 6 лет назад
Well thank you, very much appreciated. :) - yes, I dilute it more or less as described on the bottle, I do around 10-15 to 1 (water to flow-aid)

+Vince Venturella wow quick reply! For a guy doing this channel as a hobby you are in the ball :). Noted, dilution needed. Thanks man!

That Chaos Warrior is looking amazing. I am seeing him in the 40k universe giving up the axes and grabbig mics to host Chaos Eye For the Imperium Guy. (I may have been watching the Slaaneshmas episode of If Emporer Had Text To Speech Device again last night)

Great tutorial as usual VInce. An idea for another hobby cheating topic that strikes close to home for me...stencilized numbers (not number stencils) but like numbers that would be on the back of a prisoner's coveralls. those new poxwalkers some look like they were prisoners or maybe laborers and I was thinking about freehanding some ID numbers that look like they would have been maybe stamped or silkscreened.

stellar job! just a question: when you say you mix 50-50 paint and flow-aid, do you mean flow-aid in its pure form out of the container, or do you mean the water/flow-aid mix suggested on the flow-aid instructions on the bottle? thanks!!
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 4 года назад
I mean the mixed flow-aid, i.e. the 10/20-1 water mix with flow improver. Hope that helps.

Having some issues with this. Was wondering if you would help me trouble shoot the flaws in my process or palette? It's a dress - after priming did a zenithal of periscope, sibarite green, ivory. Did my pattern (in cold grey for the lows blending up to white highlights). Looked good so far. Then I airbrush glaze with inks (2:1 vallejo vallejo green and liquitex turquoise + matte medium to reduce pigment density) and I lose all definition of the pattern. It just looks flat. Color choice? Too much ink? Missed some critical point you made in the video?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 3 года назад
So here are a few keys. 1) Make all of the lines with a bright white. Don't try to fade the lines, let the glazes control your intensity. 2) Thin your inks, a LOT thin them more than you think. Then just apply some very even slow glazes. Adding more color and shadow in the recesses.

Is the liquatex flow aid the same as Vallejo airbrush flow improver? Why would you use the flow aid vs glaze medium or thinner medium? Thanks Vince!
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 6 лет назад
I like the liquitex the best of all the things I have tried. That and the vallejo are similar, but I just had better results with liquitex. The flow aid keeps your paint flowing smoothly and wicking off the brush smoothly. I use it with heavy smooth paints to get strong coverage. I use the thinners when trying to get something thin for glazing or similar. Hope that helps.
@EviLNox8
@EviLNox8 5 лет назад
So you don't mix the flow aid with water? To get a thin vallejo glaze, you couldn't just mix matte medium, flow aid and water?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 5 лет назад
In this case, the water is already pre-mixed with a little water, so it's at the right dilution. Now, as to the glaze, yes, you could certainly do that or most other mixtures to get it thin to a glaze.
@KerfluffinMcWooly

After a cloak has been zenital highlighted and has the finished amount of highlights and shades, and you apply freehand detail, how does the free hand work into the zenithal highlighting? Is the purple/blue from the cloak the only color that benefits from the zenithal?
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 5 лет назад
So the key is to then do a very thin glaze over the freehand brocade pattern and focus on the shadows to bring them in line. THen you reapply some very thin white highlights to the highest points. Hope that helps.

Can you suggest a brush I can get on eBay or Amazon here in the US? Something for these fine details with a sharp tip?
@VinceVenturella

Look for Raphael 8404 on Amazon in a size you like, I would recommend 0 or 1 for fine sharp detail work.
@KerfluffinMcWooly
@KerfluffinMcWooly 6 лет назад
How do you get fine detail like that? Do you use a magnifying lense? If so, what kind? I cannot find any decent magnifiers for wearing on my head that work very well.
@VinceVenturella
@VinceVenturella 6 лет назад
Nope, I only use a cheap magnifying headset for very tiny eyeballs. The fine detail is just as I talk about in the video, sharp brush, flow-aid, wick the excess and curved lines.
