Chris, I’ve been meaning to comment for years. I never have. Your content keeps me in the hobby. I look forward to your content every day. I’m a 42 year old man that shares your same views on the hobby. I watch each and every video you post and have for the past 3 or 4 years. Just a side note. My favorite videos where “the adventures in card collecting” those stores are amazing and I’d love to hear more about deals you’ve done with or without Jeremy. I love the snow man as well, but I really like to hear your breakdown on cool deals
Great growth by SGC, they are the best grading company out there in my opinion. Most consistent and certainly the fastest. I hope they keep taking market share. They are earning it.
SCG’s growth in the graded card department could become a good thing in our hobby. I’m usually very pessimistic about grading companies but maybe if SGC starts to grow it will force PSA to clean up its act. Most card collectors and sellers are good people who love the hobby. Unfortunately there will always be individuals who will try to take advantage of their good faith and trust.
PSA grades these particular cards VERY tough. I've tried this in the past and it will not work very often. However, there is no way there should be a 7x difference between BGS and PSA 9s. That's a clear example of PSA creating a market.
Really enjoy your content. Billy Wagner was just shy of making the ball this year. He should make it next year. Jose Altuve is definitely a shoe-in for the HOF already.
I just sent a 30 card order to PSA. First time subbing since 2022. I think a lot of people use the Sewall approach with grading (myself included). I’m hoping for a nice big hit or two on my order and the rest will be more or less break evens that I’ll sell locally at a monthly show I set up at. Also sent in a couple PC cards from the “I’ve been meaning to get these cards graded” pile.
Been following that Jeter for a while and it really depends on the card and subgrades. Most people would try to convert it to a psa 9 and if the corners are an 8.5 or show any visible white, that ain’t happening. So any of those are gonna sell as a psa 8, maybe a bit higher. You will see some bgs 9s sell closer to 1500-2k if they have nice corners and a good surface grade. But for display purposes and collectibility I still think the BGS versions are a great deal
Great video, Chris! I share similar opinions and views as you in terms of the “future HOF” lists. I wonder how often that list is updated by PSA. I’ll check in on it periodically. Thanks for the awesome content! Make sure to pay your “Research Department” on the back for pulling the all-nighter to get us that info 👍
I know a lot of people don't like him, and I don't have a particular affinity for him, but Jeff Kent should be in the Hall of Fame. He has the record for most Home Runs by a Second Baseman, plus a .290 batting average and over 1500 RBI.
Steve Garvey should be in the HOF, period. And I didn't even like the Dodgers. But Garvey was simply one of the best in his prime and was great in the playoffs.
Somebody had to submit that registry to PSA for approval. Why PSA decided to go along with it is silly. I know that there is some PSA registries where a player made sense to be part of a set, but the cards that were chosen made absolutely no sense at all.
Love you showcasing the HOF Futures set. I participate in that one (to a degree) bc they use those key cards as the "restricted HOF set" card so it helps me hone in the likely card to be added to the restricted set ahead of time. But I agree with your logic 100% regarding some of those names. I have shied away from picking some of them up as I do not see them making Cooperstown in any fashion unless there is a paradigm shift. The PSA "Hall of Fame Restricted" set is the gold standard. Another note... perhaps you can do a video in detailing how a player gets added to certain sets. I have looked into it and gotten little response from PSA. There is a process on the Set Registry site to add new player slots to set, but it has to undergo some type of review. Who and what entity are reviewing the request is unknown. Since they have Judge in the Futures set, I did request they put the Acuna "bat down" RC in that set but have no response. I also requested they add both of Lou Gehrig '33 Goudey cards as acceptable entries for the Restricted set, but it was denied. I can only guess there is a small collection (or one guy) at PSA who are the gatekeepers of these opinions. It really shouldn't matter that much, but as you have pointed out many times - the set registry does drive demand and price for many cards in the hobby.
Made similar comment above. Now you have me thinking since you bring in "value" is driven by these lists. Are players not on the list until the creators have amassed enough before pumping the price up??? 🤔
@@gridironstars Idk. It does raise some suspicions bc many of the cards are cheap and wouldn’t be the key card I would choose for the set. Great example is the Billy Wagner. Why go with base bowman over bowman best when that is what was done for the Andruw jones. There is no rhyme or reason to what card is chosen. Just so happens I received a response back today and was denied the addition of the Ronald Acuna bat down to the set. I sent a very curt response to PSA asking for some clarification and transparency regarding this process.
PSA doesn’t even offer concise grading on what factors determine a card’s true standing. Half the time their graded 9’s, 10’s are easily off-center, for example.
The BGS pop report for 90’s and early 2000 cards for me has become totally unreliable given how many people resubmitted the same card for better sub grades. This was a massive trend at a time when BGS was gaining momentum against PSA. While not common practice today - I don’t think it’s unreasonable to assume that the BGS pop report for 8-9’s (you wouldn’t resubmit for a 7) is inflated by 2-3x . Great content as always
An uninformed question about the grading of the 93 Jeter... In the early 90's was BVG a more popular grading option and more cards were sent at that time? Then as PSA grew in popularity, more of cards were sent to them as over-all grading standards have gotten tougher? Thoughts?
Its up to us, the hobby, to go with grading companies aside from the behemoth that is PSA. PSA does not grade very well and we've all got the horror stories from PSA customer service and delays in getting submissions back. SGC is the way to go!!!
Yeah the population of a BGS 9 would really keep it down, but I feel the BGS 9.5 grade takes a ton of heat off the BGS 9. Then factor in that theoretically a BGS 10 Jeter SP could be miraculaously discovered, and it would reduce the ROI on a BGS 9 even more. I wonder if a BGS 9.5 SP Jeter would be the same price as a PSA 9? I still don't know why more collectors who like going with Beckett don't clamor more for them to get rid of the BGS 9.5 grade. It clearly represses the value of BGS 9's.
The irony of BGS giving out 9 grades of the Jeter like candy is that in the photo you show in this video, the BGS card seems noticeably better than the PSA 9. I mean it could just be the photo quality, but that PSA 9 looks to have some serious edge wear on the top edge. The BGS 9 just looks cleaner.
I totally agree with you. I think that the biggest discrepancy with the population count (nearly graded the same amount) but far less 9's with PSA is their way of controlling the population count and the price values. The photos of this card looks to me that the Beckett card is a nicer card. I only use the number grade as a reference, not gospel. Just opinions. I tend to let my eyes determine what I'm willing to pay for a card.
Psa grades corners harder and bgs grades centering and surface harder. That Jeter card notoriously has a bad corner and almost all of the cards have the same bad corner so it isn't surprising that a psa 9 would be harder to get.
BGS is getting tough to sell on ebay as buy it nows. Not enough buyers for the amount of bgs graded cards out there since psa collectors generally wont touch them unless they have no other options. SGC is by a pretty long margin the best of the big companies for everything but resale, and their resale is slowly catching up to psa for buy it now sales.
If anyone is getting 9s past psa like one of your videos said , this would be the perfect card to do it with with a 3400 price difference. Cards should all basically fit snug into their holders and not some bounce around. Someone also proved Psa was keeping their high end cards very low especially on 10s. I was wondering if this was you. The video was really great and very convincing to me and others I would think.
SGC is making some movement that, is really a good month. Not having a set registry is what I believe to be one of the biggest reasons they've lagged behind PSA. A lot of the investors like, to put their money into high-end cards (vintage) and the set registry having the highest ranking is having bragging rights. Just my two cents.
Chris, was always curious who actually creates these lists? Is it PSA or a collector that has access to make them? I'm football collector and see similar patterns on that one. IMO the lists are not well maintained. Thanks!
How the hell did that Clark get PSA 10? It is horribly off center left to right. Seriously. Take a close look at the pics in the video. Grading with the data provided and the Clark example continues to be the biggest scam in the hobby
The PSA/BGS 9 (thing) IMO is ignorance. My “hobby hill to die on” is the only agreed grade BY ALL GRADERS is the term MINT, therefore classified as a 9. Feel free to choose whichever holder you as a hobbyist prefer BUT the discrepancy between pricing is not justifiable if realistically compared! True some 9’s may have better’fill in the blank subgrades’ but the OVERALL grade is MINT! My proof is any collector would happily accept a ‘52 Topps Mantle graded a 9 by any of the big 3 graders. They would all be MINT. ALWAYS appreciate your content!!
Love your videos Chris (I learn new information about collecting every time that I watch your videos), but unfortunately Billy Wagner did not get in (sorry to correct you) because he did not receive the percent needed to become a Hall of Famer in 2024 (he received 73.8%). Adrian Beltre, Joe Mauer, Jim Leyland, and Todd Helton were elected. Keep up the outstanding work!
Schilling definitely belongs. He had good career number and pitched in one of the most famous post season games ever . The Hall should be about what you did on the field .
To me I feel like the difference in PSA 9 and BGS 9 is subjective. Especially once you see the overall grades of that card between the two companies. BGS gave 0 - 10's and 0 - 10 black labels. While PSA had like 21 in a 10. Def a bit odd there would be such a difference in price of a 9 but Im no professional ha
Great video as usual. I think you misspoke with Buster Posey and meant Joe Mauer. Mauer got in this year and Posey isn't eligible yet, but I think will get in after a few years. I agree with the PED guys being no and a number of the others as likely.
What's your current thoughts on BGS? I saw a video a week or two, it showed BGS in 4th position for popularity. #1 PSA, #2 CGC, #3 SCG and#4 BGS. Does that sound right?
I've always noticed that BGS 9.5 and SGC 9.5 are about the same as PSA 9 in my opinion. Sometimes people are after the bgs 9.5 and crack PSA 9's to get the bump. Can you do a video on 1938 goudey joe DiMaggio, I just bought one and like to sell it for 10x Haha. Love your content!!!!!
I remember Sabrina was a huge female college star and now that she’s in the wnba she is a star but not huge. I would be careful buying Clark. If she dominates WNBA, the problem is that no one will care.
I was thinking, because of the difference in 9s, PSA could just be tougher on it. Id look at what a psa 8 is going for and hedge youd get an 8 on a BGS 9
Pete Rose will never get into The Hall. They really should stop these rumors--Pete's recent VladTV interview was so sad. Time doesn't heal MLB wounds for sure.
PSA creates these “ list” for the sole purpose of getting people to submit more cards for grading. If you really believe they care about who’s getting in then keep sending in cards for grading. As far as $78,000 buck for a ladies basketball card, all I’d add is there must be some people with to much money or some shifty money laundering/ shill bidding going on. It’s the reason The FBI has a dedicated task force watching the sportscard market.
Is it me or do the Beckett holders just seem "clunkier" than the PSA holders? They just don't fit in the hand the way PSA does. Has TAG made any progress? I thought their unbiased(?) computer grading might start getting a head of steam. If not mistaken, Dale Murphy is the only player with 2 or more MVP's NOT in the HOF.
I agree on the clunkier point. TAG hasn't really made much progress that I have seen although I am still rooting for them. Roger Maris also has 2 MVPS and is not in (there are PED guys as well).
I want to give you my thoughts on baseball players and PEDS first of all PEDs really didn't help those guys to accomplish what they accomplish you still have to go out there and still hit the ball with habd eye coordination. Where PEDs help you in sports are weight lifting, boxing, track and field, cycling weightlifting, body building, etc. I don't understand why mlb has a issue with it. Honestly, how much of advantage did it really did give those mlb players? As I stated, PEDS are frowned upon moreso in those 1 on 1 competition sports, more than team sports in my opinion.
Stanton looks washed at 34 and is sitting at 44 career WAR. I seriously doubt he gets into the Hall. deGrom had an incredible two year peak, but he hasn't pitched enough. Betts is quietly turning in an all time great career. With 3 or 4 more years at his current level he could be top 50 all time in WAR.
You are illustrating a MAJOR issue with all grading and the subjectivity of the process. How PSA could determine only 3% get a 9 whereas Beckett sees 17% as being a 9….. this is a disaster with no consistency whatsoever. PSA with their change in scrutiny should require them to change their case on all new grades to reset the prices of all cards graded with the prior level of scrutiny. There has to be some clear way to determine which era of PSA card you are buying.
