You are ringing up fond memories. I took some friends and a Hobie16 to South Padre Island one summer in the late 1960s. Good times. I overslept one morning, sleeping on the trampoline with my feet hanging over the side - sunburned the bottoms of my feet. Still able to catch waves, even surfed the Hobie from a wave over a mile offshore all the way to the sand. When you get enough wind, two standing out on the side and flying the hull is a major rush. (hint, move back toward the rudders to keep the down side hull pointing up so you avoid a pitchpole plunge.) Good vlog, keep it up.

I remembered that when exploring the mangroves, it was too shallow to sail when birds were standing on the bottom and once in a while I would get a jump-scare by a surprised tarpon.

Yeah, that was pretty amazing that Zoe just casually called from her wrist to get the guy to lift the bridge - while she was out on the trapeze! Couldn't have done that a few years ago. I caught the sailing bug on a Hobie 16 my Dad bought for us kids to use at the beach house, so much fun. My Mom thought it would be safer than the Sunfish far out of her sight in the Gulf of Mexico. (Ssh! We won't tell her how many times I tumped that thing over - with my dog aboard!)

Did something similar 30 years ago on a Flying Scott on the Chesapeake. Hit a squall, 50 kts white-out conditions for 30 minutes. Dropped anchor and dragged sails down and back aboard. Within 5 minutes the waves were breaking over the bow and rolling into the cockpit. Sat on the bilge bailing with a bucket. Barely missed being run over by two powerboats also caught out. After it passed I could see we dragged 1/2 mile and my hands were bleeding pulling the anchor up. It was still fun
@jamessandman3708
@jamessandman3708 2 года назад
I got caught in about a 45 knot squall on the Currituck sound on the Outer Banks once in a rental Flying Scot. Waves hitting me in the face as I was at the back of the boat but everytime that bow jumped up in the air and screamed for more! That is what convinced me to buy a Flying Scot Hull # 82! ⛵🐬

I have camped with my Hobie 16 a number of times in the 30,000 Island area of Georgian Bay. The real challenge is that the Hobie doesn't have a lot of flotation to begin with, and loading up the trampoline makes jib handling quite challenging. To free up some of the trampoline , I made up a lightweight wooden skid that allows me to lash on items between the hulls ahead of the mast. You do need to make sure these are lightweight items to avoid pitchpolling. I have managed to go to remote locations for a week and camp with a high degree of comfort (folding table and chairs, tent, bug shelter etc.).

I would suggest sleeping pads. The trapeze is just like a hammock and having no insulation under you is worse than sleeping on the ground. A sleeping bag is useless as you compress all of the fill/insulation. You either need a pad or suspend a blanket under the trapeze so you aren't compressing it. Ie an under quilt. You insulation comes from the dead air insinuation and not necessarily the material itself.

That looks like so much fun! When you're camping on it, I think putting a tarp down over the trampoline would be useful to block the wind. I've slept out on trampolines before, and they are cold! They don't hold any heat next to your body at all. An inflatable camping mattress pad would probably be helpful too. Those things are really only comfortable for casual naps.

Are you, by any chance, planning to visit ANY of the springs?? Because I don't see any sailing channels doing that, just overland channels, and you must visit at least one! They're maybe the best things about Florida. And there are several you can reach from the ocean. I'm dying to see a sailing channel visit one. Maybe you'll visit several when you see how nice they are. We can't compete with the Bahamas when it comes to beaches but our springs are where we shine!!!

@@samholmessailing weeki wachee, crystal river, seven sisters... Honestly idk if it's going to work with the Hobie. If you were still on your sailboat and had the dinghy you could do all of those plus the rainbow river and some springs on the Suwannee river and maybe the itchetucknee (not sure about those I haven't been there by boat from the ocean and some would take a while to get to). You could probably definitely do crystal river though and if you were in the St. John's river, you could get to silver Glen springs on the Hobie (might have to swim in some of the way but it's a short run), there's also blue springs park and Gemini, and juniper (juniper is kinda far but you could still explore the run a little maybe). You could do way more if you got a little outboard on the Hobie somehow.
