I borrowed a Hobie Mirage Passport 12.0 pedal drive kayak from Strictly Sail & Kayak in Cincinnati to take out and play around with, and what a great kayak this is! I transport my kayaks on a car-top roof rack, so my perfect kayak has to be lighter weight but still have higher end comfort and movement because I often spend all day out in my kayak for tournaments. At just 73 pounds hull weight and 83 pounds rigged up, the Passport 12.0 is 12 feet long and 34 inches wide, with a 400 pound total weight capacity and a 275 seat weight capacity. The Passport is made from thermoformed polyethylene, so it is rugged and durable. This kayak is on the lighter end of the spectrum of good fishing kayaks, it has a solid and stable hull design, comfortable seat, moves well in the water, plenty of rod/tackle storage, and at under $1,900, I'd say this kayak is a great option for a fishing kayak, a river boat, or even a recreational kayak for getting out on the water!
Contact for your local Hobie dealer to set up a demo! If you are in the area, stop by Strictly Sail & Kayak in Cincinnati to see the huge selection of kayaks at their shop! They have Hobie, Old Town, NuCanoe, FeelFree, and 3Waters kayaks.
Strictly Sail & Kayak has a big selection of kayaks and accessories at their shop and online!

As someone who owns and fishes out of this kayak, it is very capable and more capable than my hobie compass. I fish the Tx coast inshore marshes, back lakes, bays, and bayous 1 to 2 times weekly with the Passport 12.0. What is an absolute must for me is adding thw vertical rectangular hatch then moving the 8" circle hatch to the bow. Also, add the Passport XL rudder thats deployable and retractable from the seat. Thise 2 things make it great. Extras that have made it more fishable is adding the fish finder kit ,both side map pockets, additional tracks on both sides towards the back, and 6mm marine mat decking. For all those additions I mentioned, it came in at the same cost as my stock 2021 compass but much more capable for fishing. I do strongly suggest a 4" gel cushion for the seat.

I did not know they made an XL rudder system. And it’s deployable as well. Thanks for that info.

Awesome review, that looks like an awesome kayak! The stability looks great too, looks like it will be good for fishing 👍

Thanks! Strictly Sail has asked me to do reviews of their many kayaks, but I've always felt like I'm not an expert, so what can I add to the already crowded field of demo videos. But then I realized that trying out different kayaks would be really good for my education, and the more I learn, the better I can be as an angler! So I'm going to try out anything I can lift onto my roof!

This is the review people are looking for; my favorite part was the acceleration test - focusing on the important stuff anyway, subscribed!

My Outback came with a plastic tailpiece that hooks over the handle on the stern and flips downward, it provides a protective platform on the back to keep the rudder from taking any weight when you stand the boat up to load/unload. A very worthwhile accessory.

I ordered the passport 12 just this weekend gone. Will be picking it up in a couple weeks time. Upgraded from a prop drive kayak. The 12 in the video has such a small turning circle compared to my current kayak and is also a lot more nimble. I’ll be adding the rectangular hatch and moving the circular hatch forward, also I’ll get the internal wire setup for my fish finder and finally I’m upgrading the drive to the 180. Your video is really making me look forward to getting out on it.

Congrats on your new kayak! Just don't stand up on the back of the seat like I did. 🤣

congratulations, I recommend that you make some improvements to the kayak such as improving the rudder rod fixing system, the rod loses its glue over time and the rudder becomes loose I made a new 3D printed part with a clamp-like tightening system.

After years with a "kayak cradle" attachment on the roof rack, it is nice to be able to just go with the bars!

I also own the passport 12, the cart I use is the Hobie standard plug in cart which works fine. However I always use the rear most scuppers, I don't know if this is why your wheels are scrubbing with that specific cart though. The kayak also balances better when you are pulling it when the cart is further back, as most of the weight is distributed toward the rear.

Nice Hobie review vid, my Tamarack pro was a little heavy to get on the j bars. Especially having a broken wrist in a cast lol

Thanks! No way I could load anything over like 40 pounds on my roof rack without that solo loading bar! I hope your wrist is better!

Great review. Between the passport 12 vs lynx which would you recommend? Like them both
@GirlGoneFishing
@GirlGoneFishing Год назад
Thanks! It depends on what you are going to mostly use it for. The Lynx is lighter and more stable and a but more comfortable with the higher seat (in my mind), but the Passport has a bit more storage room and is a little more rugged (can take more of a beating), but is going to be a little heavier. Both are great options!

about the cart wheels that were hitting the hull...is that because the cart doesn't have those black stopper things that are on the hobie trax cart? I noticed you put the cart through the seat scupper instead of the back well scuppers, would that have made any difference? I'm asking because I just got some passports myself and looking about possibly getting a wheel cart for them, thanks and great demo
@GirlGoneFishing
@GirlGoneFishing Год назад
Hi! As far as I understand, on a Hobie the seat scupper holes are reinforced specifically for the purpose of taking the pressures of using the cart. I don't know anything about using any other holes for the cart, but I would definitely contact either Hobie or your local dealer and ask if that is also a reinforced area, otherwise you have a much greater risk of cracking the plastic if you put that pressure on areas not intended for it. For this demo, I only had my Hobie Fold & Stow cart that I use for my Hobie Lynx, and I guess there are rubber stoppers on the cart that I needed to adjust or something to make the wheels not rub. I have reached out to the guys at Strictly Sail and they say that the little black rubber things on the "legs" that go in the scupper holes are in fact adjustable, and will keep the kayak off of the wheels. He suggests the Standard cart, Heavy Duty Cart or Fold & Stow Cart based on how you most often use the cart. Here is the standard one (most simple of the three): strictlysailinc.com/products/hobie-plug-in-kayak-cart-standard?_pos=1&_sid=21102c2f4&_ss=r

@@GirlGoneFishing thanks so much for informative reply and reaching out to the reseller, it is much appreciated. I actually need the ones with the beach wheels for the terrain I go on but it’s good to know. I’m going to check the scuppers for the reinforcement as well, I know they are there in my 2021 compass but I didn’t see them on the passport so I need to look.

What roof rack are you using? I have the same vehicle you have and have been looking for one. Thanks 🙏🏼
@GirlGoneFishing
@GirlGoneFishing 8 месяцев назад
That is a Yakima roof rack with just the cross bars and pads for this video. Go to Yakima.com and put in your vehicle make and year and it will tell you what cross bars and towers you need for your car. Most kayaks do better with a kayak cradle added to the bars, but mine is naked because I usually transport a Hobie Lynx which has a flat hull and can't sit in a cradle. Hope that helps!

I always asked myself is it was a risk of scratching my car while loading it on the roof, as I don't have hitch.... I better get a hitch 😅

I'm sure some people are able to not drop kayaks repeatedly on their car... I'm just not one of those people! 🤣

How did you strap it? I'm a newbie. TY
@GirlGoneFishing
@GirlGoneFishing 9 месяцев назад
Hi! When I car-top a kayak, I use 2 straps around the belly of the kayak that go around the two crossbars of the roof rack. Then I use a nose strap that goes to the car's frame under the front of the car (to prevent the kayak from lifting up from the wind), and you can add a tail strap that goes to the car's frame under the trunk but I only do the tail strap on longer trips. I have had my straps snap on the road before and my kayak flew off the roof (luckily I was on a quiet side road and it landed on a grassy lawn), so I am a strong believer in more straps than you think you need! Also always carry a spare set of straps in your car just in case.
