You've probably heard about Hochdeutsch - "High German" - by now. What is it? And why does it matter?

Learn German - with Deutsch Für Euch!
#LearnGerman #DeutschFürEuch #DFE
--
What you need to do to be my intro:
Record yourself saying the following things:
"Hallo Leute! Ich bin ___ (You can say whatever you want here - name, (youtube) nickname, where you live, where you're from, why you're learning German, or anything else you'd like, one or more things. It's best if you do this part in German, too, but if you're too shy, English is fine as well - just try to keep the video to roughly 10 seconds or shorter) und ihr seht Deutsch Für Euch!"
Please don't edit your videos; if you'd like something changed (e.g. color correction), let me know in your email. I'll make sure to make you look as good as possible anyway, though ;)
I can use a lot of video formats, but your safest bets are the usual candidates: .avi, .mov, .mp4 - DON'T use .dv, please. Once you're happy with your video, send it to me via ONE of these channels:
- attach the video to an email to dfekontakt@gmail.com
- send me a DropBox link/invite me to a folder (also dfekontakt@gmail.com)
- send me a link to a the video on RU-vid, also via mail
- please title your message "DFE Intro"
There's NO time limit for this, this will be an on-going thing as long as you send me videos. I'm looking forward to your submissions - feel free to get creative with it! :)

6:12 As a native English speaker, I feel that "...this is how the elite speaks" should actually be "...this is how the elite speak". For some reason, "the elite" isn't a group of people such that it becomes a noun but rather "elite" remains an adjective so it implies "the elite people" which is plural. Egal, Ihr Englisch ist trotzdem perfekt. Vielen Dank für alles was Sie machen :)
@DeutschFuerEuch
@DeutschFuerEuch 3 года назад
Ah, fair point, thanks! So same group as "police" then, huh? Will be remembering that. Though I always thought it was due to it being a collectivist term - so "elite" and "police" would be assumed to be plural because they are clearly a group of people summarized in one word. Kind of the opposite of "news" which sounds like it should be plural, but isn't. "The good news is..." Contrast with German either way - we definitely say "Die Elite sagt..." und "Die Polizei kommt!"

@@DeutschFuerEuch Me, as a native Portuguese speaker, makes more sense to hear "the elite speaks" than "the elite speak" as well, because in Portuguese plural nouns (and articles) always end with 's'. For example: "A elite fala" means "the elite speaks" - singular. "As elites falam" mean "the elites speak" - plural. @MrDVTO I appreciate your explanation on how it implies a plural noun as "the elite people". Thanks!

Ich würde sagen dass normalerweise das Singular "speak" nach einer Substantive, die eine Gruppe impliziert, zu britscher Englisch gehört, während das plural zu amerikanischer Englisch gehört.

My Dad was born in New York, but until he went to Kindergarten spoke Schwäbisch, because that's what my grandparents spoke at home (at this stage of the game, only Grandpa spoke "Englisch".). Later on he decided to take the easy "A" in High School German and found out pretty much the first day of class that their "German" wasn't HIS "German". The easy "A" slipped out of reach: he learned Hochdeutsch with the rest on the kids in his class. Much later, I went to the same High School and German wasn't even taught anymore.

I came to Germany in 2017 with A1 level and learned at the university until C1.1 and managed to get the DSH2 in two years. Even then I really would have loved to have a teacher with linguistic knowledge like you (I'm also a linguistics major, but portuguese and latin specialization). During all my journey I had the same teacher, and everytime I had a question she would refuse to answer (or not at all understand it) by saying that was too advanced for our level. Lo and behold, I have many holes in my knowledge (I start talking about something and come to the realization I don't have vocabulary for that topic) and my pronunciation really sucks because she wouldn't correct us for fear of looking racist or something. Funny enough, at work (when I had one lol) I'd write emails and often older collegues couldn't understand what I meant, even when I double checked my grammar and couldn't find any problems.

When I was first in Germany and trying to learn German the hotel owner we stayed with his mother said I spoke Plattdeutsch, I think she was being polite and telling me to learn and speak German properly, funny thing is that after not speaking German for more than 40 years when my wife and I went to Germany on holiday I could still understand most of what was being said but I couldn’t remember most of what I was taught but after a couple of days I began to be able to communicate again but I was still translating in my mind before I spoke whereas before I was able to speak immediately and I’ve reverted back to translating again, it’s hard to explain but it proved to me that if you don’t use the language you soon forget I’m in my 70s now and was a late learner,so keep using your German or you will lose the ability to speak fluently

This is an interesting video. I live in Switzerland, and my landlady (who's in her 80s) has helped me learn some Swiss German, but she always tells me that I "don't want to learn Swiss German" and that I should just stick with Hochdeutsch. Although, living here in Zürich, I still want to learn at least some of the Swiss German, because some of it is cute. :) (Like Schoggi for chocolate...)
@DeutschFuerEuch
@DeutschFuerEuch 3 года назад
Oh yeah, it's super cute, isn't it? Don't let the Swiss hear that though, they will make teasing remarks about you that you can't even understand :( ;) But more importantly, I think it's an integral part of really feeling at home and as part of the community in Switzerland, exactly because it is such a big factor in identity. So your landlady is being very humble & kind, but I don't think she's completely right :) Bit envious of you for living in Züri! Beautiful down there :)
@witchyvicar
@witchyvicar 3 года назад
@@DeutschFuerEuch It really is. And yeah, the Swiss are a bit proud about their Swiss...well...Swiss everything. :) True, about identity, although, the way she was telling it to me, it makes me wonder if somewhere along the line someone told her she sounded stupid or something because she didn't use Hochdeutsch somewhere. (And if that really is the case, that's sad.) And yeah, I love Züri! I'm so glad my wife and I moved here!

I'm impressed by your British RP accent Katja! It's the closest we have to a standard dialect. RP was also known as BBC English (BBC stands for British Broadcasting Corporation) because of its prevalence on British radio and TV. However in recent years, there has been more of a push to get regional accents on TV. Now you'll often hear Northern accents (which were traditionally associated with the working class) on TV. However, I wouldn't say you truly get other dialects on TV, but the line between dialects and accents with regionalisms has been blurring over the last 100 years in Britain. These regionalisms could be how you pronounce the word bath ("ah" in the South, "a" in the North) or what you call a bread roll (where my family's from, they call it a batch, but I call it a roll.) From watching German TV and other media, it seems like it's all Hochdeutsch. I definitely appreciate it as it makes it easier to understand everything, but it makes the idea of going to a place like Vienna or Zürich quite scary, as the dialects spoken are so different to the written language. It sounds like in those cases, it's a lot more than just regionalisms. It's not just a case of saying "Servus" or "Grüezi" but learning to understand a completely different way of speaking!

Great content. Great sound and visual æsthetics. I guess people here would enjoy hearing your experience and comment on this less known language, Russian. Also, English speling shud be consistently regularized.
@kingbeauregard
@kingbeauregard 3 года назад
About English spelling: I will argue that it SHOULDN'T be consistently regularized. I agree that English is unacceptably inconsistent, but if we want to make English extremely consistent, consider the problems that arise with different accents and dialects, plus how pronunciations shift over time. If words must conform to how they're actually being pronounced, then the spelling of words needs to change depending on the speaker. Based on my writing, can you tell what sort of accent I have? You can't, nor can I tell what sort of accent you have. It doesn't matter; we spell words the same, however we might pronounce them.
@korzalm
@korzalm 3 года назад
@@kingbeauregard good concern, partner. I and others still consider these different dialectal pronunciation in a "moderate" reform proposal, which is: apply the spelling rules to all words. Regions that have specific and very different pronunciations could have different spellings, as occurs in other languages. For example, "data" pronounced [deyta] follows the normal rule. "Data" pronounced [dæta] should be spelt with two "t"s: datta. Others: thru, tho etc.

Before the 17th century until Harry Potter was translated into Plattdeutsch, Niederdeutsch was also a Schriftsprache. Niederdeutsch isn't really a dialect, but a separate language, that's closer to Dutch than Hochdeutsch. Viel Glück bei deinen Prüfungen!

There's a very popular myth/stereotype/urban legend saying that perfect Hochdeutsch is spoken in Hannover and surroundings, but what Tagesschau newsreaders speak is an artificial intonation, nobody speaks like that in the street, but those professionals actually have elocution lessons to improve their diction in order to be understandable and objective. Alles Gute und viel Glück aus Spanien Carlos M.S.

When my family was vacationing in Austria and we stopped for a birthday lunch at an Alm in the mountains the other patrons of the restaurant thought we were all Americans! Turns out *I* was the only American in our group, the rest of my family is from the Siegerland where R is pronounced hard almost like an American accent! It was a funny exchange: "Where in America are you from?" "She's from Seattle" "Where are the rest of you from?" "Siegen.... in NRW" 😂

When you say "Luxembourgish German" do you mean Lëtzebuergesch? I think (some) Luxembourgians would be very offended to have their language labelled as a form of German. It's really interesting: French and German are the official languages, but Luxembourgish is the national language (as far as I understand)
@DeutschFuerEuch

No, I meant the German that is spoken in Luxembourg - what you said is exactly the point of that part of the video! :) German is spoken in (for example) Luxembourg, it's an official language, but unlike in Germany, it's not also the common language (for most people). Therefore, people's peception of and relationship with Standarddeutsch is going to be different.

Unlike German,English is not standardize at all and it should be. The English spoken in England has different grammar rules and spelling than the English spoken in America. Can we understand each yes. But we spell words differently than the English. This is because Webster pick one way of spelling for America. We wanted to be our own country, so we didn't use the same spelling as the English. We got our spelling from the English. As much as they want to say they speak true English , they don't. Americans speak how English use to speak before PR became fashionable. Before the dictionary English speakers spelt words how they sounded. So the English did give us our words, because at one point they spelt words like us.
