Hockenheim - Origins of the Legendary Forest Loop - History

Who can forget the blast through the forest at the Legendary Hockenheim? V10s screaming past trees at well over 200mph, momentarily interrupted by devilish chicanes to test drivers skills. The mechanical and engineering challenge of making a car like a bullet in a straight line, but still produce downforce for the tricky stadium section was unparalleled on the F1 calendar. Fans Mourne the loss of Hockenheim and its classic layout, but many do not know the true original configuration of Hockenheim, the Dreieckskurs.
I hope you enjoy this brief look at the history of Hockenheim!
This was filmed using the two great simulations Assetto Corsa and Grand Prix Legends. Links to the tracks used below:

Different times (1932). 1930s Germany was car/racing crazy. Much due to certain political "circumstances". Motor racing was one of the best showcases of technology.

The old Dreieickskurs actually still exists. The part to the Spitzkehre in Oftersheim is still a public road like it was back in the thirties and the part that leads from Oftersheim to Hockenheim is a road through the Hardtwald (the forest). It is a paved road where you can ride a bicycle or walk, cars are not allowed. The roads around the Stadtkurve in Hockenheim also still exist. They are also public roads now and at the Stadtkurve is now a building of the Hockenheim Fire Department.

Well finally someone has put forth a complete track layout video / history. Was there 1964- 1967. Raced Ducati's 250's there in 65 , 66. Used to camp outside the final r/h turn in the trees, as there wasn't any grandstand build then. Great track then.

This is one of your best videos. Outstanding homage to the once formidable Hockenheimring. Fun fact, I originally tried building the 1932 and 1938 layouts for Rfactor in about 2009 but ultimately abandoned the projects for various reasons. I once again tried to revive the project in 2011 adding a 1980s proposed layout that added more significant corners at the various forest chicanes, but again this was abandoned due to work commitments of the time. I hope someone revives these old layouts for Rfactor 2 as that software became too complicated to build tracks for my humble skills. I'm glad that my Imola, Attia Stadt and other tracks live on these days though.

Can't agree more! Love tracks like the old AVUS track, that one insanely long Italian circuit and other obscure early 20th century tracks. I think using custom track files on a racing game to show these tracks is perfectly acceptable, since there's hardly any other way to show how these tracks were.

Great vid. I am glad to have witnessed several F1 races as spectator at the high speed straights. It was magic experience the V10 and V12 there. My first visit was back in 95 where Michael Schumacher won in the Benetton. The sound of these cars and the pure speed was pure passion. Was disappointed that they destroyed the old circuit. What a shame.

As a child of the '80s, I grew up watching Formula 1 throughout the '90s and into the early '00s, Monza and Hockenheim used to be my favorite races to watch! it annoyed the hell outta me when they announced that they would be resizing Hockenheim for the '02 season :(

Variety is the spice of life, and Hockenheim was a great contrast to the other tracks back in the day. It wasn't just Hockenheim that didn't have passing, no one could pass anywhere.
@TheYoshi463
@TheYoshi463 3 года назад
Formula 1 is not purely about passing, it's also about the craziness of driving the fastest and most overengineered cars on the absolute limit. No track encompassed this better than Hockenheim, apart from maybe Monaco, the Nordschleife and Spa.

There was still a good slip-streaming battle once in while until the very late 1990's & early 2000's. But the cars were becoming so far advanced that those occasions basically faded away. One of my favorite races to watch aside from the 1969 and 1971 Monza races, is the 1970 Hockenheim race with Rindt and Ickx duking it out. Good audio too with natural sounds.

I think the original Ostkurve(used up until 1982) was a very challenging corner. I always fond of the old Hockenheim circuit, in the refuelling era, as it actually encouraging racing ontrack - rather than overtaking someone in pitstops. You had to set the car up on a compromise.

F1 at the old track was just waiting to see how many cars would remain at the end of full race distance . I liked the track to drive it flat out took some skill while not blowing your engine apart. I mean at the end of the day they had to return the track to the woods that was the agreement for the use of the Forest section I understand. the new track is not bad but it is a long way from the classic layout. nice to see the original layout thanks.
