I also wonder what the parents were up to. As a parent with a daughter who has issues, I know I'm doing every thing possible to help her make correct choices. And, yet, she still chooses to do stupid stuff. But if he was actively beating up, bullying, ... I mean, the peeing on a sucker thing would have had me sending the kid to someplace where he could get mental health treatment and then move him to another school, perhaps an alternative school. Hockey is an expensive sport, especially for one who is good enough for the NHL. I expect the family should have had the resources.

guy ruins a kids life for his entire childhood, calls him slurs, beats him, forces him to eat from a urinal and random people online are defending him because ‘it’s soft,’ he apologized (forced to legally), and his age. just because you’re fourteen doesn’t mean you’re brain dead; you have to choose to actively bully someone for years. people genuinely commit over shit like this, and the fact that people are defending it is pathetic. crazy how a person can ruin someone’s childhood for years and expect it to not catch up with them. being sympathetic to him is crazy imo. i get that he was 14 (i’m typically down for second chances people change) and bullying exists, but for this long and to that extent, with no genuine accountability? bruins management is a joke all accolades aside you have to be an absolute DUD to defend a person like this…. why?

Mitchell Miller isn’t a good person. How do you make an apology out there, but not even a personal one to the victim or the family. I haven’t heard of him going out of his way to make any donations or to help charities/fundraisers for anyone with disabilities. There is so many things he could do to help make up for his horrible actions, but he seemingly doesn’t care. My sister has Down syndrome and is the sweetest person I know. When I first heard about this, I thought "maybe he deserves another chance". But looking further into it, it seems like he still hasn't apologized (or may have reached out to his victim through IG DMs about a week ago... we can probably guess why). Also, screenshots of text messages from the victim's mother mention years of torture, not just "an incident". I do think people deserve second chances but from what I read, what he put that kid through was absolutely disgusting and cruel, and it wasn't exactly a one-time thing. Unless I missed something, we also haven't seen any remorse or growth on his part since the news first broke out. If anything it looks like him and the Bruins are trying to minimize what happened with the wording they're using. Also, the "he was only 14" argument is irrelevant imo; at 14 you do make mistakes but tormenting another human being to such an extent and in such a vicious way is a big deal, and he should have known better even at that age. Poor judgement on the Bruins' part.

I think the biggest clarification that needs to be made here is that Mitchell Miller's abuse did not stop after he was 14. 14 is just the age that he forced his victim to lick a pissed on piece of candy. Miller would both mentally and physically abuse his victim for years to follow, right up until a year or two before he was drafted. While I agree that someone's behavior at the age of 14 should not dictate the rest of their life and career, this goes way beyond that, and it was not just something he did when he was 14. Now that I watched the video, my biggest complaints with Eck here is I don't thing he's being harsh enough. Being 14 years old is not an excuse in anyway. This was repeated behavior that went on for an extended period of time. It was not a one time incident. And the behavior that took place is twisted and terrible even by a 14 year old. What he did is the type of stuff that you don't get to excuse yourself of because of your age. This is even further amplified by his complete lack of remorse for it. Because if he still doesn't even see it as that bad today, then there's little sense in trying to defend him "because he was only 14, that shouldn't determine his fate!" Well, he's 20 years old now, an adult. And he still seems to think what he did was fine, meaning he's not changed whatsoever. And finally, again, way too often we hear in sports, "Aw, that shouldn't ruin his career!" We need to remember that being able to play sports for a living should be considered an ultimate privilege. You get to play a game and make millions of dollars off a purely entertainment type job. There's no reason we should be comfortable with letting noted scumbags continue to bask in the sunlight. So many awful people have been idolized due to their success at sports. This isn't a declaration that Miller shouldn't be allowed to work anywhere at all, but I don't care how good he is, he has not earned the honor of being able to have his dream job. But that's life. Most people don't get to attain their dream jobs in life. Why should we be bending over backwards for obvious cases where the person is human trash?

The victim's parents had gotten past this whole ordeal, but when they saw that perhaps the most despicable person they knew was drafted into the NHL, they spoke up and good for them. Just after I turned 13 years old my father passed away after a lengthy illness. His death was not expected. and my mother was devastated. Someone had to go to the funeral home and make arrangements and buy a casket. I took the responsibility and went to the funeral home to take care of business. I was told what my budget was and I had to remain within our means. The funeral director tried to up-sell and I said no. I then went out a got a job to support myself while attending school. There are many similar stories of people taking responsibility for themselves. My point is I have zero time for someone who says "I was just 14 years old, I didn't know better". Mitchell Miller knew exactly what he was doing; he knew it was wrong as everyone who hears the story repeated knows that it was wrong. Bullies are always sorry when they're caught, especially if there are consequences. Shame on this man and shame on the Boston Bruins. Mitchell Miller doesn't deserve to play. If at 14 you can't tell that being a racist piece of sh*t that bullys and traumatizes a mentally not fully developed kid is a bad thing to do then you don't deserve an NHL contract. Ever. It just rewards a kid for his talent and teaches him that everything else will be ignored as long as you're good enough at playing hockey. Horrible standard to set as a team and as a league. Anyone can say theay've apologized. But if the victim doesn't accept the apology, which I thought was the case in Mitchell's draft year, then it doesn't mean anything. Just saying words doesn't show growth as a human being, it isn't even conclusive evidence of regret...

People need to remember, swcond chances are earned, not just handed out on a whim. With soorts, people tend to sympathize with the athlete far more than the victims when it comes to redemption arcs. He has barely apologized. And when he did, it was clearly out of his own self interest as a 'check list item' so a team will accept him, not because he believes he's wrong. Note that recebtly the victims mom mentioned it wasnt until this week he tried reaching out over instagram, and now all of a sudden he's getting signed, lol.... Also any apologies he has offered completely minimize what he actually did. Qhwn you apologize, you need to fess up to all the ways you screwed up. And lastly, this is a thing that went on for years. It qas not a one-time lapse of judgment. Even if he was 14, ever teenager knows that what he was doing was seriously wrong. He deserves zero forgiveness from anyone. The onus is still clearly on him to show he's changed. And really the only thing he has shown is he still doesnt actually care, which is even worse, and should be MORE reason to continue to reject him. The sad truth with hockey culture though.. if he manages to be a valued asset on the ice, people are quickly going to pivot to "that was years ago, let it go!"

There's a couple ethical questions to ask here. One, is the result of a bad action significant to how bad the action is? Ie. Is driving drunk worse if it results in someone dying? Ultimately the bad decision was the same one, but because of outside circumstances the result was quite different. Two. As far as i'm concerned no one is really beyond redemption, but has the individual been moving in the right direction? There's generally something underneath that brings about these sorts of actions in people, and it's hard to tell if that's changed unless you are the type of person that would have been one of their victims. Especially for us as fans, we don't know if the guy's changed or is changing for the better. It sucks for someone to have something they did years ago and learned from hung over their head for the rest of their life, but we also don't want to empower dangerous people by assuming they're better just because the public incident was years ago, thus messy and all around unfortunate situation.
