Behind the facade of glamour and wealth, the wives of some retired hockey enforcers are in their own fierce fight. They want the NHL to acknowledge that there's a link between fights, and head injuries on the ice and long-term effects like degenerative brain disease. Women like Jennifer Belak and Kelli Ewen whose husbands Wade Belak and Todd Ewen took their own lives are part of that fight but so too is Ela Carcillo. She is married to recently retired player Daniel Carcillo who says he wonders if he will become one of the sad statistics.
Clarification: An earlier version of this video incorrectly implied that former NHL player Steve Montador was universally known as a hockey enforcer and had killed himself. He did not take his own life. That earlier video has since been deleted.

I had the pleasure of meeting Wade Belak in Coventry whilst I was playing youth hockey and he had come to play in the blaze first team during the lockout. The only thing I can say is he was a top, top guy and I really feel so sad for his lovely family that they’ve been let down by the NHL and some poor medical professionals like this. I hope we can keep awareness of these brain injuries high and one day rules are passed to make sure players are properly protected so that sad stories like these are things of the past.

There is one NHL former coach who at the first hint at head injury to all star Pat Lafontaine he benched him for protection. That was Coach Ted Nolan, and it cost him his career.

So TRUE - if you KNOW WHY it’s happening you can better cope with it. I was severely depressed- very unlike me - for months. No Dr or anyone recognized it, just “get over it” kinda thing back in late 90’s. One doctor actually said I wasn’t holding my food down (constantly nauseous/throwing up) because I wanted to be thinner. Never wanted to be thinner, very bony in my youth, hated it. Was 135 lbs and 5’8. Actually baker acted myself because - I was real close to suicide. My friend FINALLY recognized it the SECOND time. I had the 6 month “depo” shot-Birth control- and THAT is what was causing me to be irrational, mentally unstable to hold a job, horrible time. AFTER I realized what was causing my brain malfunction - it was literally easier to deal with the symptoms- had 5 1/2 months left for it to wean out of my system. Let my Dr know that prescribed it and he actually HUNG UP on me, will never forget that. Just wanted him to be aware of the side effects- to help his patients. 30 years later still was a traumatic time but I KNEW something WAS wrong and nobody cared enough to listen.

Psychiatrists & other psych doctors should absolutely be asking about head trauma & not just emotional trauma to get a better understanding of the biological side of their patients' illnesses. It's becoming clear from all these concussion/CTE documentaries that things like bipolar disorder, depression & schizophrenia can be caused by head trauma, or at least made substantially worse. If that's the case, the whole "nature/nurture" paradigm is grossly incomplete. All we focus on now is genetics + environment which leaves no room for head injury, lead poisoning or other biological insults. That needs to change.

i'm both a TBI survivor and bipolar II, and in my case the TBI left me with lousy options for treating the bipolar. (namely, most of the common drugs used have seizures/tremors as a side effect, and pretty much anything that CAN give somebody tremors does give ME them.) also, i ended up on SSDI as the best of bad options because 40/40+ hour week="my body won't take this and my skill set is all back office so getting a flextime or PT job is pretty much YEAH RIGHT NOOOOO", and it's frustrating having to explain to almost every new medical pro that "nope i don't remember half my own medical history without either my binders or making my bff medibuddy it up again".

I got knocked out twice in Muay Thai Kickboxing in my mid 30s. Both were from full force head kicks to my chin and it was instant light outs, like a switch. The first concussion was pretty bad, but the second one within 3 months was the nuke. I couldn't handle bright light, TV sound or anything with a screen for 4 months. What helped me considerably, and I think it cured my symptoms was high intensity training with a heart rate monitor with a personal coach. My max heart rate was around 194 during this time and my trainer would get me to the "dark zone" at around 186 to 190. I would then have to hold this zone to near max failure for about 1 minute. It was done mostly on weight machines with low to medium weight high reps followed by push ups or burpees. Within about a month I was back to myself and tried to avoid heavy sparing for about 6 more months. I'm not sure if it will help anyone post concussion but it definitely did for myself. I'm now back playing hockey and coaching my kids' hockey teams. I have had some issues that pop up over the last decade such as anger issues and a need to isolate myself from family gatherings. Covid was a convenient cover but I was actually happier not seeing anyone and I've continued that trend. Not sure if it's related at all.

Not profession. Not money. Sounds so often to me like many of you are saying that all the trauma these people have gone through doesn't mean anything because they are rich hockey families. But they made the choice they got paid good money I hate how they blame fighting when it counts for 5 percent of hockey's concussions. But it's the low hanging fruit now the game sucks. Disagree. 47 with multiple concussions. Doctors estimate probably 11 or more only found after a slip and fall knockout 4 years ago in which full scans were done. Explains a lot I wont go into here but all throughout playing from middle/high school, rep leagues and collage the only time injuries were discussed were a) signing of player/league waivers, paperwork nobody reads and b) when a major injuries took place ie fractured ankle etc. Long term Brain injuries were never discussed. I took a hit one time on the boards which knocked me out for approx 20 seconds. Teammates said later my body was twitching. I got up and went after the guy who jumped to plant my head in the glass....because of this they said I was fine. I sat for a shift and was out for the next. Later that night I was vomiting non stop, zero sleep and wicked headache. Was given Aleve of all things. Today we know I should have gone through concussion protocols which were not created at the time. Do i blame anyone...no. .nobody knew. So I have to disagree about "everyone knowing". As science changes so do the facts and as the facts so does the science.

Very naive response. Im the same age. I had a concussion in middle school rugby, was knocked out cold, vomitted on the sideline and then told the coach I could go back in. Luckily my coach knew a little about concussion but most didn't. Ive since had numerous other concussions from sports, had I any idea the pain I would be in now, I wouldnt have played. Most people had no idea the consequences of concussions.

Dear Vandymeer: You are 100% correct to comment that "Saying these guys didnt know anything is bs" because everyone was aware many decades ago of prize fighters who were "punch drunk" after they left the ring. Even as a teen in the 1960's, I knew that prize fighters who got hit too many times in the head ended up in various states of "vegetation" later in life. So why should getting hit on the head in hockey be any different ? It isn't, and I can't believe that NHL players and their wives were as clueless as they now say. If they didn't "know" then they were in Deep Denial, being blinded by the glamour and mega-bucks of life in the NHL. Above all, the NHL "victims" cited in this report were all Greedy. When your making Big Bucks as a pro hockey player, you don't need to play 10 or 11 years like all of these guys did. 3 or 4 years would've been enough to save a nest egg to transition to a lucrative, less violent career. But they couldn't retire after 3 or 4 years because they were Greedy for the Big Bucks that they could only make in the NHL. So, all these NHL "victims" got what they deserved as far as I'm concerned. ... jkulik919@gmail.com

What we did know is that boxers take far more punches over the course of their career. A tragic death like this impacts ALL of their loved ones, and by denying his daughter her voice here, she has undoubtedly been re-traumatized. Nobody in the 90's or earlier knew that playing full contact would result in TBI. As someone who lives with it now, it's not something I knew about until it happened. It's no joke either.. Sensitivity to noise, light, balance issues at times, memory gaps.. things happen and it's that 5% of the time that scares the living you know what out of you. If your brain is fully functional 95 percent of the time, that 5 percent is that much more difficult to deal with because you can't "fix it" or know when symptoms will occur., For those claiming that these guys knew what they were getting into.. LOL, speak on your own behalf. When you speak on behalf of them, you're not credible. It's spewing non-sense.

hating every time you have to deal with a new medical pro because too many of them side-eye you HARD when you tell them you don't remember half your own medical history without the paper documents to refer to or my bff being there since she remembers WAY more of it than i do, stress and medication-triggered tremors that are arguably why i couldn't manage to stay at least underemployed despite being a college grad with a STEM degree.... the pre-existing bipolar ii probably didn't help but the tremor-related absenteeism got me "you're great when you're here but you're just gone too much" type reactions from enough jobs that i ended up on SSDI as the best of bad alternatives. i got mine in the 90s, and i am pretty sure that nobody NOW would have let me go right back to engineering major classes with essentially no time off. (at the time i was mostly just happy i could get a medical drop that wouldn't count against me for a class where the prof made no sense and *was* genuinely giving me tremors from the stress in ways that even other major courses weren't. i got a B in the same class with a much better professor the next semester and also started to realize that "oops now i have to inform lab partners that they better be the ones handling the glassware and my classmates in general that i may make involuntary noises/have the shakes please don't call 911 because i''m not an epileptic". anything beyond that....not so much. i didn't even realize the reason i pretty much quit cross-stitching then was probably TBI-related attention span damage, for instance.) so yeah, don't try to tell me that 90s dudes knew what they were getting into, because i definitely didn't. (if i had i would have kept way better records of whatever medical stuff i tried back then, because i have huge chunks of my life that i'm essentially "i believe you when you tell me this but i don't independently remember it" and that by itself is frustrating.) as a side note about how TBIs can affect your personal relationships, my mom laid down the law about "nope, you are not doing that 1000+ mile road trip to visit us again even in summer, flying ONLY" after the year when she came to wake me up for pancake breakfast, i had instant tremors with no warning the instant i tried getting out of bed, and i spent the day tranquilized up instead of getting to see my family ON july 4th, which pretty much sucked. (even getting up for long enough to eat the to-go pancake plate she snagged me was tricky, and i went right back to bed afterwards because mine are basically "clonazepam and sleep it off" once they start.)

It's a myth that repeat concussions are the baseline condition needed to cause CTE. More recent science shows that repeated hits to the head, without concussions, can also cause CTE. In other words, the damage needed to set you on this path, is less than once thought and more insidious. This doesn't just involve sports, but other situations involving repeat head trauma (partner and child abuse, military service). A lot of intense sports involving repeat hits to the head such as ice-hockey, football, rugby, boxing and MMA need a complete overhaul of rules and better head protection to deal with CTE trauma, especially if starting from a young age.
@arthurkemp4494
@arthurkemp4494 2 года назад
Why? These athletes know the risk and these sports are all completely different in regards to head tramua due to frequency of them. Fighting probably the safest because of target area being the whole body not just the head and the fact the frequency is small as a fighter doesn’t fight very often in comparison to team sports.

Moose wasn't even a fighter, but between Mike Babcock's humiliation and 3 or 4 concussions, he can now barely function and is constantly depressed.
