You pronounced Terunofuji and Mesei’s names perfectly. This was such a bonkers match up. Kinboshi literally means gold star and it is awarded when someone outside the top 4 elite ranks beats the yokozuna. Pls more sumo coverage, Terunofuji’s story to the top is bonkers
Yeah kachikoshi is just having more wins than losses for a tournament. But your pronunciations were pretty spot on except for kinboshi; I think you got tricked by the English word kin but the Japanese is pronounced more like "keen"
They tried SO hard to Arsenal that one away. Should have been a 3-4 goal lead, they get a goal in extra time chalked off, it was not looking good. And then they prevailed. Welcome back to top flight, Luton.
sumo is my favorite sport and I didn't miss it! glad to see it getting some jomboy recognition. ps you were right the first time, he got the kinboshi which translates to gold star. Kachi Koshi is when you finish the tournament with more wins than losses. and Terunofuji isn't just a champion, he's the Yokozuna, the only rank that can never be demoted, in recognition of his overwhelming dominance. he won the tournament 14-1.
Absolutely surreal listening to jomboy breaking down a Sheffield Wednesday game. Watching your breakdowns helped get me into baseball so happy to not just see some football on the channel but my club too! WAWAW
I love this series so much. We hardly ever see these sports in the US, but they're always presented fairly and with commentary simple enough for our basic American brains to grasp. It's fun seeing the hype from other sports we don't get the opportunity to experience.
Yokozuna is not a championship, it is a rank earned by winning tournaments called bashos. A kinboshi is a win against a Yokozuna while not being an upper rank. That was the only loss for Terunofuji this tournament and he went on to win it for the eighth time. The next tournament will be held in Nagoya in July.
Specifically there are five ranks in the top division, and a kinboshi is beating the top rank (yokozuna) while at the fifth rank (maegashira); it's a huge deal because it gets you extra prize money for every tournament you enter for the rest of your career.
I wish this was a daily morning show. 5-8 min long episodes showing all the other sports and competitions and I’d be watching it two or 3 times a day just like I used to watch the 94-96 30 min sportscenters.
Probably one of the best videos from this series so far, absolute love this content and enjoy seeing this show up every week on my feed, keep it up and please continue this series its super great to see both things I witness on stream live and insane moments that I would have absolutely missed if not for this update.
Just a note on the epic Sheffield Wednesday match. That was the match to determine which team would go on to play for the right to move from League One (Third-tier) to second-tier English football, the Championship. (English soccer leagues have shitty, confusing names.) It wasn't really a "locality" match, it was basically the second biggest match of the season. And the Sheffs did the thing.
What he was trying to articulate is that Wednesday has a more local fanbase compared to the top 7-8 clubs in the Prem that most americans are familiar with.
Fun fact. Sheffield Wednesday are named after the fact that when tbey first started in 1820 as a cricket club they played on wednesday's. They formed the football team in 1867 as a way to keep fit in the winter.
Sumo is actually mad hype. Really glad you exposed some more people to that sport. It's insanely cool. Super simple, tons of tension, and the matches are usually over in seconds. The athletes are also insanely impressive once you get over the fact that they just don't look like we typically expect one to..
More sumo please, I am always hoping for more western coverage of Japanese sumo. On another note, Terunofuji went on to win the tournament, despite his loss there
Jomboy, more sumo breakdowns, please! You will learn to love it as much as you learned to love cricket! Six sumo tournaments a year at 15 days each. Each wrestler has one match a day. That was the Grand Champion's only loss this most recent tournament as he went 14-1. More sumo! You won't regret it as a fan of sport.
5:19 if you ever wanted to get into the mind of a defender, look at this moment. Dude is standing inside his own net, the keeper is over his own endline behind him, and my man still tries to raise his hand for offsides.
As an update to that Sheffield Wednesday match- it was the Playoff Semi-final, which means they had to play the Playoff final against nearby Barnsley on Monday, making it a Yorkshire derby. And they won that was well in the 123rd minute! A 4-0 deficit to promotion to the Championship was simply incredible.
My comments have been heard, a section on sumo! so happy rn! btw, this was the only fight terunofuji lost in this tournament, which gave him the tirle with a 14-1 record.
Sheffield Wednesday play Barnsley today in the playoff final for promotion to the Championship (tier two). Thanks for showcasing League One the third tier of English football. There's nothing like it in the world. We have five very well supported levels where at least 110 of the 116 clubs are fully professional. The promotion playoffs are great drama at all levels.
Was also like "Is that Wednesday in the thumbnail??". Good recap but would have loved a bit more context (e.g explaining the EFL playoff system) of the game like he gives to American sports recaps though
@@marniusvanderlubbealso, if American Football was actually called “Handprolate-spheroid”, then by that logic worldwide Football would be called “Foottruncated-icosahedron”, as it’s not actually a sphere (so a ball) but a three-dimensional object with 32 sides
The only sports that would accurately be called “[blank] ball” are basketball and baseball, and by those naming conventions, American Football and worldwide Football would be called “Endzoneprolatespheroid” and “Goaltruncatedicosahedron”
Speaking of soccer/football, both the German Bundesliga and the English Premiership ended this weekend. You could make a great video of the clubs that get relegated or stay up and the emotion and reaction to it.
I'm so glad to find out you make these! Your weird sports videos are some of my favorite ever, but I'm not into baseball at all. I was bummed there weren't any more like the Dutch canal jumping or Uzbekistan horse/goat murder sport, but these fill that gap.
Take a look at the highlights from Dublin vs. Roscommon in Gaelic football this week. It was a well played game that ended in a tie after Dublin squandered a scoring chance and let Roscommon get a freekick right at the end. The result is fairly surprising is Dublin is by far the largest county in Ireland and historically one of the strongest teams, whereas Roscommon is a very small and rural county in the west of Ireland.
Cool series, I like it. A minor suggestion for the banner at the bottom, I think there should be a subtle hint that there is more to come. I was initially surprised when the topic shifted to the right and there were more news items. Maybe a little arrow or something to indicate there's more than the four things on screen until it gets to the end.
whats even more incredible about the comeback is that it was literally the last action of the match. it was seven minutes into 6 minutes of additional time which means the match would have ended there if they didn't score. and since the score was equal, the game goes into two additional 15-minute periods in which another 2 goals are scored. this is indeed insane (i'm not from england)
Holy smokes! You finally showed something I watched. I watch all of the sumo that I can. I could given you tons of pointless color commentary, history, drama, and... stuff.
Re sumo, you get a kinboshi for beating a Yokozuna, you get a kachikoshi for getting a winning record in a basho (ie, getting your eighth win out of 15). it's possible to get both at the same time as Meisei did here. But a kinboshi can only be achieved against a yokozuna. You can get a kachikoshi against anyone and most rikishi get kachikoshi in a basho without ever facing a yokozuna
You need to breakdown this Crazy Finish in a New York Baseball State Title Class B1 Final between Hornell and Palmyra-Macedon. Just seen it in my feed from yesterday. Insane. Celebration losses title. Hornell was up 5-4 and needed one strike in the bottom of the 7th to win. A called third strike looks to be dropped by the catcher, but Hornell celebrates that they have won the State Championship. As they celebrate, Palmyra-Macedon alertly had the runners go and the batter who just got the third strike, but was not tagged or thrown out at first, round the bases, giving them a 6-5 State Title win!!!
Never thought I’d see Wednesday on JomBoy. Surreal. Just a little aside. The guy you didn’t know who that person was…the coach. His name is Darren Ferguson, manager of Peterborough. He’s also the son of legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
I'm voting for a write in fan of the week with the Sumo lady. I can't believe she didn't make it on there. I mean, I get that C was the obv winner but like... She should have been on the list.
