Hogan's Heroes!: This is Probably WHY Gen. Burkhalter's Sister was Agent "Nimrod!"
Many watching Hogan's Heroes have seen the episode, the Missing Klink. In it, we were told that there is a secret British Agent posing as a German counterpart. Who is this mysterious figure? The show never told us. In this video, I explore whether or not that person was General Burkhalter's Sister, Gertrude Linkmeyer!!

Fasc inn natink... However, I believe Schultz was, in fact, Nimrod. He had access to Klink’s office. He was the Sgt. of the Guard, he saw everything the prisoners did but did not report them, even when the roll call was short prisoners or the wrong prisoner was present. And he was the owner/president of the most successful and popular toy manufacturer in all of Germany, so adding the plans into the model would have been easy. Now, you could argue against him being Nimrod by referencing the episode he was made Kommandant and became “strict,” but remember, Burkhalter was watching him closely and it would have played into Schultz’s disguise to throw off any and all suspicions about his true roll in the war effort. Just my two cents thrown in...
@E3ECO
@E3ECO 4 года назад
Can't be Schultz. Nimrod was known for passing high-level, top-notch intel to the Allies. He simply didn't have access to that sort of thing, and neither did Klink.
@cliffordgarstka8224
@cliffordgarstka8224 4 года назад
E3ECO as Sgt. Schultz, you are correct. But, as Nimrod he did. Proof? The underground didn’t have access to most of the information they passed to Hogan, but they got it through espionage, the same as Schultz could have. Plus, if you remember from the episode his “profession” was disclosed, everyone “knew” him and wanted to curry his favor for after the war positions. He would have traveled throughout Europe before the war making contacts for his toy business, easily putting himself in contact with custom agents so his toys would be allowed into countries beyond Germany with as little trouble as humanly possible. And, as president/owner of the country’s largest toy manufacturer, it doesn’t make sense that he would only be a Sgt....

Interesting theory. I have always thought that Burghalter was Nimrod because he had direct control choosing Stalag 13 for testing secret weapons and such, he was the one who appointed Klink to commandant and he knew whatever trouble Klink would get himself into, the heroes were capable of saving him. But combined with this theory, it is entirely possible that Nimrod was both of them as spies.

That's what I've been thinking. You just see Helga in the background, you don't know that much about her. But she does have access to a lot of things. Yet there is one problem. Why would Nimrod confine her or his self in one area? Even a Stalag 13. Nimrod seems to me to be a roving agent, not just centering him or herself to Hogans operation. Hmmmmmm🤔

Playing the dumb idiot who can't shoot straight is a good way to stay off the front lines and out of trouble. He once told a refugee in hiding that he found by accident to run away. I always bought that Klink’s secretary was nimrod . My thought was that she was in the company of all the Germans since she was beautiful they would tell her things plus she had an in with Hogan and when Hogan had other allies posing as Germans she could pass info on to England. But you made a good point that general sister was nimrod. You’re convinced me when in the barn she pulled Schultz down and he was a big man. Also she had at least one husband sent to the Russian front. That would play into her keeping identity. In one of the other shows the big wig General daughter let the Americans steal out of her fathers safe plans. So there was women agents. Love your videos. Granted, in real life Julia Childs was an OSS agent, but I still feel that Schultz was Nimrod. That could be because I have read so much Tom Clancy but also understanding how the CIA uses agents (have you ever seen the movie Gotcha?). Schultz would have been the perfect Nimrod, because: 1) He lost his factory (life's work) to the nazi's and that is plenty of reason to hate the nazi's. 2) As the top sergeant at a POW camp he has a lot of perks, including setting guard patrol patterns to benefit himself-and subsequently Hogan's crew. 3) As Schultz was Nimrod before Hogan's crew came along, once Hogan's crew came along the relationship became symbiotic. 4) If you have seen Stalag 17, which paved the way for HH, that Schultz was not only a mean and vicious nazi, but he also recruited and "handled" the allied traitor that betrayed the prisoners-thus laying the ground that Schultz knows his intel work. 5) From Clancy, a good agent knows how to activate an escape hatch and granted, women are masters of disguise, I still lean that Schultz had the better cover and therefore the ability to move about undercover than Gertrude could have.

I like the Gertrude theory as it reflects a certain parallel to real life that they may have been mirroring. Female agent, Virginia Hall was one of our top spies in occupied Europe. Nazi's did post a reward for her capture which never happened. She had a prosthetic leg and even escaped capture by a painful hike through the Pyrenees Mountains. She even later returned and disguised herself as a milkmaid hiding the artificial leg under a long dress with a gate that just made her blend in as a heavy-set elderly woman though she was a skinny young woman. She was a spies spi, meaning she did everything from training other spies, recon. My memory is bad, but I think she also did some recon for D-day - might be mistaken on that.

It's odd that she'd be allowed access to anywhere. Seems to me that if she was Nimrod, General Burkhalter was probably involved. He was regular army, not a Nazi, right? Far as I know, the army were at odds with the SS. Nimrod certainly couldn't have worked too awfully much alone, so a brother/sister combo may have played out very well.

The barn screen scene it's convincing, maybe she saves Schultz because she knows that the operation at Stalag 13 needs a person like Shultz so the hero's can pull off certain missions, and it would take a long time to replace him. Secondly, she is already knows Hogan and the rest of the crew, so she realized she wasn't in danger.
@E3ECO
@E3ECO 4 года назад
Interesting. I hadn't considered Gertrude, but she has the same drawbacks as Burkhalter himself in being Nimrod. Remember when she was engaged to Klink's executive officer? (can't remember his name) She made difficulties for Hogan when she didn't have to, the same way Burkhalter has made difficulties for him. Of course, it's possible Burkhalter and his "sister" are an intelligence team. Nimrod doesn't have to be one person, even though he's referred to as such. It would be easier for them to work together rather than one trying to hide from the other.
@Losttoanyreason
@Losttoanyreason 4 года назад
She isn't obliged to help Hogan just because she might be Nimrod unless ordered to do so. Her focus if Nimrod, is to protect her cover, to collect intelligence and pass it on, not aid Hogan in his lower level escape and sabotage operations . Hogan's operations would be sacrificed in an instant if need be for the intel Nimrod supposedly provides. Of course in the real world, as many people as they helped escape, some would have blabbed to the wrong person(s). As a result Hogan and his crew would have long since have been executed for their operations along with Klink and Shultz for being in charge while the operation was taking place.

Regardless of which character was Nimrod, the key to Hogan's operation was the conspiracy of silence among all the German characters. They all had suspicion and even direct knowledge of Hogan's activities but none ever moved to stop it. Why? They all had personal motivation to see the Nazis lose, even while loyal to Germany itself. The hardcore Nazis made Klink's life a living hell - blackmail, intimidation, humiliation, and very nearly executing him for treason! Schultz was a Social Democrat whose toy factory was confiscated. Burkhalter (the most likely Nimrod due to his high position) would have first hand accounts of Hitler's insanity. And his sister probably was helping him. Helga was just staying on the good side of both parties in order to survive and hedge her post-war bets. Hochstetter is the biggest mystery because we learn so little about him. Could he also have become disaffected? He likely witnessed many atrocities. Had he seen enough? All had reasons for staying out of Hogan's way.

My first instinct was to say, "no" based on the character only being in 5 episodes. But then I began to think; That doesn't mean she didn't show up when we weren't 'around'. My understanding was that she was a widow and had the hots for Klink (and probably thanks to her brother) a few others. If she went around to various camps or HQs or whatever 'chasing a man', then she would have access to many officer offices. And NO one would think that A) as the sister of a reputable General and B) being a woman (this WAS the 40s) that she could POSSIBLY be a spy. Nimrod being a woman is probably the MOST feasible notion even if it was Fraulein Burkhalter (or Frau whatever her married name was). So Hilda/Helga would make a good candidate. In fact, Hilda (I think), in the B/W pilot was actually down in the tunnel with Heroes! She never was there before. Then there is the annoying, red headed Russian woman; whatever the hell her name was. I mean why not? She could have been a Russian/German spy for the Brits as well. I have only seen 3 of these. But of the 3, Gertrude is the best bet.

She could not have been Nimrod for the simple reason that verse showing up on the camp would have been noticed. As soon as she went through the gates people would have been curious. That is why I still say it is Major Hostetter. Yes people would have noticed him what they would have stayed away from him because of his position. Also the Major never eliminated Hogan. Since Hogan was such a problem it would have been so simple just to eliminate him. Klink was an idiot. Shultz just wanted the war to end. That leaves two people.

I think general Burkhalter was Nimrod for the following reasons: 1) In an episode where the heroes thought Klink was marrying Burkhalter's sister, Newkirk says they will not be losing a Colonel but gaining a secret agent. 2) Nimrod was described as a high ranking official, and we find out in one episode that Burkhalter is on the general staff. 3) Burkhalter's office is bugged by Hochstetter and he despises him. 4) The wording of the note in the model Kit is similar to what Burkhalter uses in the pilot episode (my dear Colonel Hogan). 5) In an early episode, Burkhalter is in Klink's office discussing the security of Klink's Office. One of the heroes is looking through a picture on the wall. Burkhalter notices this and does a double take, but does nothing. 6) General Burkhalter was the last one to touch the model kit before Hogan takes it, so he has opportunity to put the note in the kit.

And if you remember one episode when he says you should marry again and she says why I’m perfectly fine sitting at home with mama. And if they don’t live together she really doesn’t have access to the generals briefcase or whatever. I agree with the previous commenter James Spiker that Sergeant Shultz was Nimrod. He let way too much go on in the camp without reporting it. It was revealed in one of the episodes that before the war he was a prestigious owner of a toy manufacturing company. In an episode where they thought that the war was over, both Kernal Klink and Major Hawkstetter we trying to get employed by Sergeant Shultz. Also, General Burkhalter's sister may have had the run of Stalag 13, but she as a woman would have been way too conspicuous going in to a men's prisoner of war barracks. However, Sergeant Shultz was in and out of there so often that he could easily go in there to slip in a note signed by Nimrod.

My theory on Nimrod was that it was Hilda, she'd have access to a lot inside the camp and with her being the secretary you have access to all kinds of files and also can listen in on the phone too. In the beginning of the series when Helga was on the show she was apart of the hero's and she knew of the sweat shop, barber shop...etc. down below the barracks. So, maybe Hilda was just like Helga. She was also in on some of Hogan's plots for diversion too. Plus, she never stayed at Stalag 13 she'd go home and come back in the morning or later at night whenever need be.

I think she is a great "suspect" for all the reasons you mentioned, she is in a great position to gain knowledge being the sister of a General, access to the camp and prisoners etc etc. One item that kind of stood out in my mind was in the episode you mention where she is pulled over and kidnapped by Hogan's Heroes, she says she doesn't have any papers...the very first thing that a top agent has is great forged documents! Why in the world would she not have any documents? Unless she recognized what was happening and didn't produce her papers because she knew how things were going to play out but since I've never actually seen that episode I can't offer anything more. Very cool theory though!

The only time I remember the name "Nimrod" being tossed about was that one episode. If the producers, or writers wanted to imply a serious possibility of any regular, or semi regular character being a high level British agent, they would have went with the idea more than they did. They could have gotten a lot of mileage out of a behind the scenes super agent. Nobody was Nimrod. Even Tiger showed up in several episodes, but the name Nimrod, only one. It doesn't hurt if some fans like to conjecture about it, but I don't.

They couldn't turn REAL people into fictional characters on Hogan's Heroes. Nimrod was a REAL spy.

Not the worst candidate, but I still think Schultz is a better candidate. Owned a large company. Probably did some exporting before the war, and therefore had contacts with neighboring nations. Maybe even the occasional bribe to smooth business dealings, which would give him extra contacts with government types. Not sure how much Linkmeyer had access to other military secrets. Her brother once told Klink the Gestopo had his office bugged (Klink was sitting on the bug at the time) meaning they were watching him. This would have complicated Nimrod's work if she were dependent on Burkhalter as a source. Not impossible, but I think, less likely. If not Schultz, a false flag might be the best choice. British get information from the resistance, for example. They sneak something to known agents with the idea that it came from Nimrod. Other information found on a North African battlefield. If the Germans find out, the British got it from Nimrod. Resources spent looking for Nimrod are not looking for Hogan and company, or other sources of information. Doesn't mean Hogan can get sloppy, but the more looking for Nimrod, the less looking for Papa Bear.

I think it was Gen. Burkhalter. He had his hands all over the plans before Hogan took them.

General Burkhalter was in charge of all prison camps. The Red Cross, the source of the model kits per Hogan, was based in Berlin, where Gertrude lived. Very convenient for her to slip in the plans. She had all kinds of access through her brother to classified info and had the perfect cover. Maybe Otto, her MIA husband was captured and is being used as leverage to co-opt Gertrude into the skulduggery or he just convinced her to do it. Either way, it is her or the General himself.

If nimrod actualy was british, and only impersonating a german. And if Gertrude Linkmayer was nimrod, than why wouldn't general Burkhalter recognise that? After all, if somone would take the place of your own sister (that you are rather found of) wouldn't you recognise that?

The 1960s audience already knew who Nimrod was. Nimrod was a REAL spy during WWII, so he couldn't be the fictional Gertrude. Hogan was actually lucky Klink wasn't forced to marry her. She might have been ugly, but she wasn't stupid. If she had been living permanently in Stalag 13, she might have caught him. At the very least, his movements would have had to be much more restricted with her eagle eyes watching everything.

Gertrude would fit except for what you said and the fact that she could never enter the camp without Klink fawning over her and kissing her brother's butt by proxy. She would never get a moments peace. Or Klink would go paranoid and assume she was there to inspect things and have her watched, she would catch on and her cover would be blown. Plus, frankly, she does not look ready to pull off some jedi-ninja sneaky tricks. I still think Schultz is the best candidate, though he didn't look like he climbed much of anything. He was owner of a profitable toy company, successful businessman, family man, drafted, factory also grabbed now making bombs, constantly abused and threatened by Klink... I can see him harboring a lot of resentment. Enough to make him Nimrod? He often said, "I see nothing!" But he wasn't panicking at the time.

I would think Klink's secretary Hilda was Nimrod, she was always in the background. As I remember she had several flings going on the side besides Hogen. I believe she was a tribute to Nancy Grace Augusta Wake the 'White Mouse' that had a 5 million franc price on her head.

Before the War, Schultz was a Children's Toy Maker who owned his own Children's Toy Company [ this is mentioned on one of the episodes ] .. the note was left in a Children's Model Airplane Kit, which would have been manufactured by a German Children's Toy Company [ whether Schultz's or not we don't know ] - a clue and a clear Foreshadowing that Schultz is Nimrod .. He clearly ignored or actively participated in the Heroes' activities, sometimes directly witnessing them committing acts of sabotage against the German Gov't, yet he never turns them in .. he gave them information in exchange for Louis' Pies or a meal or a candy bar .. Schultz is clearly Nimrod ..

What if General Burkhalter was Nimrod? It would be a perfect setup, he has just enough rank over Klink as his direct Superior so Klink is afraid to make him angry so Klink naturally won't ask questions, and from the other end as Colonel klink's Superior he has constant access to his office, and funny things always seem to happen whenever he visits the camp that is ironically when the prisoners seem to get most information regardless of whether or not any of the others possible nimrods are there or not. And for the sake of this show according to the script General burkhalter is also Hitler's right-hand man.... So that would be an ironclad setup.

You are missing an important point. Nimrod doesn't just work around Stalag 13. So, your choice has to mobile. Schultz and Klink aren't..Gertrude wasn't in that episode. How could she ask Albert for the "keys" without raising questions. She never comes to see Klink with her brother. As far as Schultz goes, Hogan blackmails him with stuff he shouldn't know and if he tells. Hogan will tell and Schultz will shot or sent to the Russian front. But, the most important point is I don't believe we know his nationality. I thought he was British posing as a German.

My money is on Schultz. He 'knows nothing, sees nothing and hears nothing', yet he knew everything. He would let Hogan know what he needed to know but always made Hogan work for it. If it weren't for him, Hogan would not be half as effective as his team was. He was always up on the latest gossip and it was accurate. There was an episode were the Gestapo was looking closely at Schultz as a spy. Hogan was desperate that they didn't question him for fear of how much of Hogan's operation he would reveal. Schultz also had the perfect cover of a low ranking officer, definitely not on the radar. Plus he made it clear he preferred the allies over Hitler and the Gestopo.
