Nimrod was supposed to be the most highly placed spy in the German military. Shultz wasn't well placed enough. However, I like to imagine Nimrod was running a network of spies inside the German military, and I like to imagine that Shultz was the guy he had assisting the Heroes.
@ajs11201
@ajs11201 4 года назад
I agree. Schultz may have had tremendous motivation, but I doubt he had access to enough German intelligence to be considered Britain's top spy worthy of a $4 million bounty. For example, how would Schultz, a prison camp's sergeant of the guard, have access to a secret German bomber plane?
@canuck_gamer3359

One of the problems with trying to reason out the most likely candidate (keeping in mind, it's just for fun) is when we wonder outside the facts that were given by the show and enter into speculation. Speculation obviously has endless possibilities and in this case, the show (I don't believe) ever said anything about Nimrod being "the most highly placed spy..." What they did say was that Nimrod "operated right in the German's back yard", which could simply mean he was one of them. In the case of that particular episode the only thing we can reasonably say with some degree of certainty is that whoever Nimrod was had to have access to the outer office (and to your point, perhaps simply had someone working with him who had that access). It's apparent that Schultz had access to the office but what is more difficult to argue is how could Schultz have been "personally responsible for the Nazi's defeat in two major campaigns" (which is something Hogan himself said about Nimrod)?? That is a tougher question to answer.

John Jones: I agree completely. Shultz is a lovable guy, but he simply did not have the sort of access that was needed to be Nimrod. On the other hand, General Burkhalter definitely had such access. After all, Burkhalter is actually on the Fuhrer's staff. And he spends plenty of time at Stalag 13

In fact I see Schultz as an example of the good you can find in the worst of places.' Strong words from a man who lost his entire family to the war, some even to concentration camps.

Then how did Nimrod help before Helga got there and Hilda was the secretary? Burkhaulter was Nimrod, he decided where classified tests would take place in Stalag 13 even though so many times Hogans' bunch destroyed them. Burkhaulter was also the one that assigned Klink to Camp 13 and he is also the one that sent POWs there. Yeah that is just what a deep state spy like Nimrod would do, set up the Heroes and then give them every chance to make mischief. Klink may have been his cohort and the same with Shultz. Who knows maybe they were all secretly related and in-laws already? Perhaps Burkhaulter is the "brother" that got Klink assigned to Camp 13. After all Albert was the one in charge of such things. Finally consider this; Burkhaulter was the one that handed the plans to Hogan.....

Shultz saw the tunnel a million times. Not to mention all the people they snuck in through it. Schultz just didn't want the aggravation of turning them in from under his nose. As for Shultz passing on info for a few candy bars or cigarettes, this was included because in reality the POWs in WWII could bribe the guards all the time with those things and even a pound of coffee. It really happened as Stalag guards were the dregs of German troops and Germany was being starved into submission by the Allies.

Completely agree that we aren't to take Shultz at face value. My money is on General Burkhalter as Nimrod though. In the episode in question the General immediately dismisses the concept of Klink being Nimrod yet allows the exchange to be made anyway. Burkhalter and Hochstetter are the only ones who know they are supposedly dealing with Nimrod and so are the only candidates to be able to write Hogan the note at the end of the episode. I love these theories on old TV shows, yes we were suppose to take everything at face value, but where's the fun in that!?

In Austria you don't buy a grave, you rent it. After John's wife died there was no one to pay the rent on the grave, so the grave was rented to another person and his casket is on top of John's casket. She died before that least expired, and the couple had no children. Most of John Banner’s family died in the Holocaust, so there was no one left to renew the lease. When it expires, the coffin is removed, any remains are cremated, and disposed of. Loved it! Sgt. Shultz was Nimrod for this show. Yeah, he was too low level to be worth $4M ($59M in 2020) but that isn't the point. He always knew what the hero's were in to and never once stopped a single event against the Germans from happening. He attended nearly every meeting the senior officers had, even as an enlisted man who was in charge of the guard. In truth, he had no reason and likely no clearance to overhear top secret / need to know information but someone always found a reason to be there. Multiple times he caught Hogan's team spying and yet did nothing, even quietly behind the scenes he could have stopped it to safe face (and the Russian front). If Shultz wasn't Nimrod, he was very effective at running his own one-man operation of allowing the allies deep access into German and doing serious damage to their military efforts. Great job, Rick...loved this whole unmasking. Now if it wasn't for those pesky kids and their dog...

@BrianKPatton
@BrianKPatton 3 года назад
The case for Burkhalter and Hochstetter are both strong. But I think Hochstetter is the more apt choice. Though he's not as high up, he has all the information and a built in spy network. Plus the travels placed him throughout the Reich. A Gestapo agent is less likely to be suspected of treason than a General. Generals were constantly turning on Hitler. He didn't trust them. Plus, Hochstetter never busted Hogan. He "tried" to, but lets face it. The Gestapo wasn't a joke. All the Hero's would have been shot while "trying to escape" at the first sign of wrongdoing. Yet other than some cooler time, never got in trouble. Shultz didn't have the access / travel. He was just complacent. He wanted to end the war and go home. Didn't care how. Wanted to stay hidden, safe, off the eastern front and back to making toys. Klink didn't have the access / travel. His impact would have been contained to the area around the camp. Same with Hilga.

@@BrianKPatton No not Hochstetter. He's too much. He interferes WAY too much. Burkhaulter interferes, but never does anything drastic. Hochstetter has almost caught the Heroes a few times, Burkhaulter always had my eye. He was always at Stalag 13, when there are much better places for a general to be than hanging around a prison camp all the time, and always seems to give the Heroes opportunities. What we need to realize is that to look real, Nimrod would need to interfere a bit to not become suspicious, but in the end, not come up with anything. Burkhaulter is the best candidate in my eyes. Klink is just stupid, it would ruin the show if it were him. Shultz's character is best a stupid goofy guy who just wants the war to end. Hochstetter is best the real Nazi who really wants the Nazis to win, and Helga, well she's just passive. She isn't high enough to really be able to do anything. Could very well be, the points mentioned in this video adds up, plus there were a few times that Schultz would say "If you do decide to escape, take me with you." Another thing is he knows he could get into really big trouble if he makes friends with the prisoners and here he's seen many times playing poker with them or getting advice from Hogan or one of the others or talking to LeBeau about making him strudel or something to eat.

He heard nothing, he saw nothing. Plausible deniability. The good sergeant was the head of a toy company. Which means he was a clever dude. Also, he was pretty chummy with Hogan and his crew. Perhaps the good Colnel knew all along who Nimrod was.
@kenpdx7471

Could it be that we're overthinking this, and that the writers never had an actual identity for Nimrod in mind? Even Burkhalter wasn't in a position to know all the things that Nimrod apparently did (let alone his sister) ... he was just a run of the mill Luftwaffe general in charge of some POW camps. There is really no regular character in the show that would have had sufficient access to German war plans to be this legendary spy.

I agree. Unlike today, with streaming, DVRs and such, writers can have an overarching theme which is advanced in each episode. But such technology didn’t exist in the 1960’s. So each episode (with a rare double episode) was “self-contained” so that a person who was unable to watch a few programs wouldn’t miss anything important. Howard Caine (Hochstetter) played two other one episode part before he became the friendly major. In his first appearance, he played an artillery officer, and in the second a Gestapo colonel, who dies at the end of the episode when a bomb exploded in his staff car. He was just so good at it that they brought him back as a recurring role, Major Hochstetter (I hope I am not butchering the spelling. Television shows were just written that way then.

@@johncronin9540 Yeah ... I remember when I was growing up we'd just watch whatever was on and didn't care much about "seasons" and ordering and such, and neither did the syndicators when they reran these programs on the UHF channels .... the playback was totally random and they could hopscotch between different seasons from night to night. Like you said, most episodes were designed to be self-contained so it didn't matter.

Well, I'm not sure who Nimrod is supposed to be, but I think it's interesting that they are building a toy plane called Hindenburg, when that was the name of a zeppelin that blew up in1937. Also interesting is that Robert Clary played in the movie the Hindenburg in 1975.

I agree with EVERYTHING you said Rick, a great video once again! I would like to ask one thing though, when you talk about Nimrod having access to Klink's office, do you mean his actual office room or the outer office where the secretary sits? Because in the Nimrod episode the plans with the note were found in the outer office and that I think is important. You also mention the "parachute" episode but I think it's also worth mentioning that in episode 5 of season 1 (Flight of the Valkyrie) when the plane actually takes off (from within the camp), Klink orders Schultz to fire on the plane but Schultz never actually fires a shot! I think that is also pretty good evidence because there are other times in the series when Schultz does actually fire his gun but in that case he didn't want to risk hitting "friendly" forces so he just fumbles around and doesn't ever take aim. My money is on Schultz! lol.

I hate to play the spoilsport, and perhaps I am wrong, but the model and plans had been delivered by the Red Cross. Nimrod would almost certainly been able to smuggle top secret plans into directions for assembling the model of the Hindenburg. He, or she, needn’t have gotten into the camp at all.
@canuck_gamer3359
@canuck_gamer3359 3 года назад
@@johncronin9540 As others have said (or no doubt will) this is all purely for fun and is all speculation. And the biggest reason is that Nimrod was nothing more than a plot device for the show, they never planned to name Nimrod so they didn't have to lay the ground work. But it's still fun for fans! Having said that, we never see the Red Cross deliver the plans but Hogan says "The men are eager to get started on the models they got from the Red Cross." He was asking to see Klink because he had the plans (instructions) for the models. The model boxes were stacked in the front office (Helda/Hilda's office) so they could have been put there by anyone who was able to enter that room. The Red Cross could have delivered these items and left them at the front gate but since this was part of Hogan's plan, he likely had something to do with having them placed there. And remember, Nimrod's note and the secret plans were inside one of the model boxes, apparently not hidden. So if a German guard decided to search any of the boxes, they could easily have found the secret plans. So it makes sense that they were placed there after they had been cleared. Just some more thoughts to consider :)

The way Sun Tsu describes a spy behind enemy lines fits Schultz. He's indescriptive, looks and acts as if a little ... you know. Everyone thinks he's the loveable, tonned man who just wants to keep out of trouble. Yes, being a guard sergeant in some "random" PoW camp in the middle of nowhere is a counter-point. Buuuuuut has there been mention of how long Schultz has been part of the camp? And how long Nimrod has been on the run and active? Nimrod could be trying to keep a low profile since they think the war is at a turning point. Spying in a war is incredibly dangerous. There is room to assume that Nimrod could have his contacts and network acting for them by the time Hogans Heroes takes place, rarely having to act themselves. Also, Hogans Heroes are doing quite some work. Nimrod could have deciced to support them and their agenda simply because of overlapping objectives.

With all the shenagans that went on under his nose and the fact that he never told on the Heroes is amazing. He saw the bunk bed tunnel entrance closing! The heroes never seemed upset when Shultz saw incredible things like that and included him in on many schemes. Interesting possiblity. I think Nimrod was Shultz!

Nimrod, in my theory was not a single person but the name of an operation. It involved Burkhalter, Hochstetter, Klink, Schultz and the secretary, both Heidi and Helga, all working under orders to assist Hogan and crew. A very dangerous and delicate act to disrupt enemy activities, return captured personell, and destroy things and operations.

If you include other episodes then you have to include that in some Schultz is 😂married and in some he’s not. And although we’re glad he assisted the allies he clearly allowed many of his fellow German soldiers to be killed. In various episodes he was part of the movement of dynamite, uniforms, radios, etc. Plus, he could have just left the plans in Hogan’s barracks. And what’s up with Hogan and the gang completely ignoring all the other soldiers in the barracks? 😂 Great video. Now every time I watch it I’ll imagine him as Nimrod.😂

One other motivation that you never touched on: Schultz owns a *toy* company. Many such people at least start ( and can keep ) the motivation of simply bringing joy and happiness to children. A person like Schultz could look at the Nazi party with horror given both their open hatred and their indoctrination of children into paramilitary groups. It's not just that he wants the war to *end* ... it's that he wants the downfall of the Nazi party.

It’s too bad that was the only episode and reference to Nimrod, but I never gave it much thought as to who it could be. Hochsteter and Burkhalter were great in this episode. The scene where hochsteter was on the phone thinking he was talking to Nimrod, was so excited that he memorized what he wrote on the paper and started to eat it while talking to the general. All episodes were great and my TiVo records them all. I watch an episode or two just before I go to bed for the night, regardless of how many times I saw it. It’s just one of those shows you can do that with.

Shultz was not 'High ranking'. While he could turn a blind eye to anything going on, he was not in a position to organise anything. My money is on General Burkhalter. He is in a position to protect Kink, a dupe who had no idea what was really going on, overlook Shultz's short comings and manoeuvre the right people into Stalag 13, for example Helga/Hilda as a friendly secretary.

So, I was thinking that wouldn't it be ironic that if Shultz really was Nimrod, he knew what Hogan & Co. were up to all along. But, THEY wouldn't known that HE knew! So, there they were, "outsmarting" Shultz left and right, oblivious to the fact that Shultz was in on the gags. However, it was VITAL that they believed Shultz was the enemy. Shultz HAD to make them believe they were at risk of being discovered so that they would be extra careful. In this regard, it could very well be that Shultz was indeed Nimrod.

Schultz's motives were a lot stronger than that. I don't know which episode, but it is revealed that Schultz was an SPD voter before the NSDAP took over and banned all other parties. So he had a political motive for opposing the NSDAP and supporting the Allies. There is also an episode where a German general visits and reveals that, when he was a completely green junior officer during World War I, Schultz was his sergeant who really taught him how to lead, how to fight, etc. So Schultz was a highly competent, heroic veteran of World War One. And now he is this seemingly incompetent nincompoop? Clearly, he was a German patriot who had served his country heroically during the First World War, but, when he saw the National Socialists take over and what they were doing, he saw that true loyalty to Germany meant working against the National Socialists by working for the British, and he played dumb so that no one would suspect him.
