When Ric Flair made his way to the WWF in late 1991, the wrestling world was sure that "The Nature Boy" would battle Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania 8. Ric Flair came to the WWF holding the "Big Gold Belt", (the NWA / WCW championship) and Vince McMahon had no issues with showing the championship on WWF programming. Claiming to be "The Real World's Champion", Ric Flair's arrival garnered a ton of attention from the wrestling media.
Hulk Hogan had regained the WWF Championship at WrestleMania VII. Throughout 1991 Hogan mainly worked with Sgt. Slaughter, but when Ric Flair made his WWF debut it seemed like the WWF didn't know what direction to go in. Sid Justice also made his WWF debut around the same time, and while the WWF were initially going to go with Sid vs Hogan at WrestleMania, the bigger drawing match would definitely be Hulk Hogan vs Ric Flair. A series of events would lead to the Flair vs Hogan match not happening, and there have been many reasons given as to why the biggest marquee match in WWF history (at the time) didn't take place. This video looks at Hulk Hogan's journey to WrestleMania VIII, Ric Flair's WWF debut, and the WrestleMania 8 main events.

Honestly Flair would GLADLY put over anyone anywhere. Hogan on the other hand NOOOO. I can easily see Vince in secrete confronting Hogan like "Terry what you think about working with Flair in Mania? We already did you both in house shows so it shouldn't be a big deal".. Hogan: Mania and house shows are two different things Vince.. I think Terry got cold feet.

@@Phenaam12 6 man elimination match as the main event of Wrestlemania? Idk maybe today but back then it just sounds too messy. Normally manias main even is a clash between the two best in the company that year with the title on the line. Always with the top face taking the victory for that feel good happy family moment. 80s and early 90s would never have let a multiman slugfest go down on the last card of the night. Vince would've had a sh*tfit.

I’d consider Bret a shorter guy not small. He had a medium build so even though he was shorter he looked bigger. Unlike Shawn Michaels who was scrawny and I would consider him small. And that’s why IMO Bret had more credibility against the bigger guys than Shawn if that makes sense

If anything, he should finish the entire series and then try to get it onto the wwe network as it is with an agreement for no changes to be made. Edit: actually come to think of it, that wouldnt work either. He should just keep doing his own thing.

Wrestlemania 8 was kind of the end of the Hogan/golden era. Besides Hogan leaving, Piper and Jake Roberts also left. Santana putting over Michaels, Jake putting over Taker, Martel putting over Tatanka, and Piper putting over Hart was all like a changing of the guard ushering in the younger talent. Sid was also gone about 2 weeks later. Warrior was gone by Survivor Series, and Savage started doing more commentary, and wrestling part time. I remember right after mania Warrior was to feud with Sid and Undertaker with Papa Shango. Then when Sid left Warriors feud switched to Shango and Undertaker started feuding with the Berzerker.

I agree with most of what you said but the WWF still had Flair/Perfect/Big Bossman/Dibiase/LOD/Nasty Boys etc competing. I’d say that Survivor series 92 was the last PPV era of the Golden age of WWF.

@Alex Kanyima I agree to it being a catalyst for a change of talent. But a full on transition happened towards the end of 92 and was quite noticeable at the beginning of 1993. The declining years of wrestling 1993-1995

Macho Man didn't even put Flair over at Mania, so I don't think Vince asked Hogan to put Flair over...I also think Flair would have jobbed to Hogan without making a stink...Truth is WWF booked Hogan/Flair matches at house shows prior to Mania because, according to reports, Vince needed the influx of cash at the time...I guess Vince felt that some of the luster of that match up was lost as a result, and decided to go in a different direction at Mania.

U could see it in his face in one of those documentaries when asked what happened to the match "I don't know what happened brother, it is what it is" just like Hogan saying he only used his creative control ONCE in WCW and that was in 2000 at Badh at the Beach lol right.

@@nick56677 Hogan was always about making money, as he should have been, because wrestling is a business...Bobby Heenan once said that Hogan would work with anybody if he thought it would draw. Hogan was already wrestling Flair at house shows so why would he balk at a Mania showdown...I think Flair would have put Hogan over without hesitation, as Flair was just happy to be out of WCW...The decision to nix the match was a financial one. Perhaps a miscalculation, but nothing more.

You should watch the actual Hogan vs Flair 91 house matches. They are actually very good. I believe from the Garden. Much better than the WCW matches from 94.

to play fantasy warfare a bit, imagine a Hulk Hogan vs Ric Flair WWF championship match at WM8, but a title match (or rematch) at SummerSlam 92 in London at Wembley Stadium. THAT could have been EPIC. Could have had Hogan win the title at WM8, just hold the thing all summer, with an occasional promo, setting up the rematch at Wembley, where Flair wins. Or vice versa. Could have still did Warrior vs Savage too. Rematch of their WM7 match, and winner gets the champion at Survivor Series or something. im happy how it actually played out. But to play the "what if" game is fun sometimes.

I was shocked on the Flair 30 for 30 when Hogan admitted Flair was easily the better wrestler. I always remember what Bruno Sammartino (I think) said when describing Hogan's ability: "He has two moves, and my grandmother does that leg drop better."

I am so glad you got into the steroid issue. They got Hogan, Warrior, and Savage off of TV so fast, and they ALL came back looking significantly smaller. I personally think that was the reason.

In regards to WWE ATTITUDE ERA & WCW MONDAY NITRO...Put it like this... I was in college, my apartment was across from the elevator. I would have my door open & people would walk by and make fun & laugh. I started challenging anyone talking slick to sit & watch that NWO sh#t on WCW MONDAY NITRO. Within a month, my apartment was filled with people goin crazy. And these were NOT wrestling fans..

The plans for WrestleMania VIII were a lot different from what happened: - Ric Flair vs Hulk Hogan for the WWF title - Randy Savage vs Jake Roberts in some sort of blow off match - a face Sid Justice vs a heel Undertaker - Marty Jannetty vs Shawn Michaels (scrapped when Marty got fired one of many times) - Money Inc vs Sgt Slaughter and Jim Duggan for the tag team titles - LOD vs Natural Disasters in a street fight - Big Bossman/British Bulldog/Virgil vs Mountie/Nasty Boys - Roddy Piper vs Bret Hart for the IC title seems to be the one major thing that didn’t change

Yep, that was about the time I lost interest in wrestling. Didn't start watching wrestling again until 2001, but even then I didn't really get into it. Amazingly though, the first WCW Nitro I watched was the WWE takeover. I was like, "What the heck is going on here?" I started getting back into wrestling though during the very late Attitude Era. Both The Rock and Steve Austin were starting to move on and the Ruthless Aggression Era was starting. A great time in wrestling. After both Eddie G. and Chris B. died and Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar moved on my interest started to fade again.

then make sure to have Sid, Flair, Hennig, and even Papa Shango for good measure, whoop Hogan's ass for a bit and then have the Warrior run out and clean house and save Hulk. Show still ends the exact same way. It definitely could have worked. Although I didn't mind Savage being Champion all summer.

I always knew about the poor house show reception that WWE claims was the reason for not having the match. But you went SO much more deeper into the reasons, and what you said here makes 100% sense. There was no way Flair would beat Hogan during this WWF era. They wouldn’t end the show with that. Great video keep up the great work!

I disagree. The very fact that it WASN'T for the title is what made it special. Would you have preferred that Shawn Michaels last match against the Undertaker would have been for the title ? Or Flair vs Michaels? A mans career is much more important than any title. WrestleMania 7 was legitimately supposed to be Randy Savage's farewell. The whole point of the match was so he could reunite with Elizabeth and end his career as a baby face. ( of course he was back in the ring only a few months later but that's another story😁)

Flair vs Hogan didn’t happen because both Hogan and Sid gave notice after the Royal Rumble. It would not make sense to have heel Flair beat face Hogan at WM 8 main event. So the term ‘kill two birds with one stone’ was applied and make Sid vs Hogan the main event since both wanted out. And Sid was never fired, he quit after his Warrior match in Baltimore.

The allure of Flair being in the WWF was HOGAN. They were the two biggest names in the business for a decade. Which is why throwing them together a week after he's officially cleared to wrestle there is the dumbest thing McMahon could've done. I still don't understand the logic there. You're sitting on the biggest match in your promotion in the last five years and the second biggest of ALL TIME to that point, only behind Hogan and Andre at WM III. Why he sabotaged it, I'll never understand. No one can make it make sense.

Warrior didn’t go into VII as the Champ to face Savage because business wasn’t going great. They wanted originally to do Hogan Warrior II but Vince hated baby face vs baby face main events. Also tbf with Hulk on Arsenio Hall he was advised to lie by McMahon.

Richfield Coliseum (former home of the Cavs)1992... Richfield, Ohio. Flair/Sid vs. Hogan/Piper. I was in first grade. It was my first live pro wrestling event.

The 92 royal rumble was the last I watched as an avid fan.... I was just so pissed off at Hogan for eliminating Sid after he legitimately put out the hulkster.... after that I bearly watched it though I was looking forward to as we all thought would be the inevitable clash of Hogan v flair at wrestlemania 8.... after that I thought sod this for a laugh and never watched it again , aside from pre 92 stuff .... though up till the end the 92 royal rumble was great.... shows what flair could do as a 'has been ' , he litteraly carried the match for over an hour.... he'll always get my respect 👍

Savage never ONCE had a world title win that wasn't tainted by Hogan. Mania 4 - Hogan interferes to get Savage the belt Mania 8 - Had to win the title halfway through the show because Hogan demanded the main event spot World War 3 - Hogan calls an audible and changes the finish halfway through to give himself a reason to complain that he 'never lost' Nitro(1/22/96) - Hogan runs out to 'save' Savage from the Four Horseman while he defeats Flair. Hogan then celebrates like HE won the belt. Spring Stampede 1998 - Beats Sting for belt, loses it to Hogan(With Bret Hart) the next night on Nitro Bash at the Beach 1999 - Wins World Title in a Tag Team Match playa, teaming with Sid against Nash and Sting. Loses belt to Hogan(With Nash) next night on Nitro

He also lost clean to warrior because of that reason only because warrior couldn't sell tickets like Hogan and savage did. So he was sure that Vince would come calling before summerslam

Would have been really cool though to see a long rivalry between Hogan and Flair. As a kid I always wanted to see Hogan vs. Flair. I tell you what though, that Ultimate Warrior vs. Sid Vicious match sounds very appealing. At least on paper though lol. I bet the match itself would bomb.

It makes me wonder if Sid Justice's heel turn was accelerated due to the crowd's reaction to Hogan being eliminated at the Rumble in '92. If Hogan didn't have to lay low for the rest of 1992 due to the increased scrutiny WWF was in the time of the steroid scandal, was the original plan for Sid to turn heel after WrestleMania and work a program with Hogan as the champ?

Always felt like Flair should had stayed in the New Generation era🤷🏿‍♂ He could had made a great stable with Razor as the muscle, Perfect as the Manager and Money Inc. As the tag team. Always felt The Million Dollar Man was Horseman material.

For one, Star power was sorely needed in WWF, and with Hogan gone in 1993, and Savage being forced out in 1994, Ric Flair would have been the best choice to make Bret Hart a star (he did it before) and maybe he could have swiped up Shawn Michaels in his stable, with Razor Ramon and Mr. Perfect. Two, Flair would have been treated better in WWF then he ever was in WCW, even while going "young" I still think Ric Flair would be wrestling in some capacity

Can you imagine what they really could have done with this? If Tully & Arn had stayed. If Andre the Giant had been in good health or had Rick Rude join in. Could have had the 4 Horseman going up against Hulk Hogan and Macho Man. Also Ultimate Warrior as well. Could have built a lot around that! The feuds would have lasted for a few years!!!! So many good matches and tag team matches would have been built around this!

I felt that in kayfabe Hogan vs. Sid made sense. Sid "cheated" Hogan out of winning the Royal Rumble (in a spot that was previously used in the '88 rumble where the Twin Towers double-teamed to eliminate Hogan). In that Rumble, Hogan threw a similar tantrum and then illegally eliminated the Boss Man from the outside; the very same Boss Man who technically eliminated himself in the 1992 Rumble when he leaped at Ric Flair. One would think since he was the runner-up, Sid should have gotten a shot at Flair for the title. Though him wanting to get revenge on Hogan made perfect sense considering what happened. Plus I imagine a Flair/Sid match would have probably been even worse than a Flair/Hogan match. One difference though is that Sid probably would have been cheered and him winning the belt would have been better received by fans. It could have been seen as redemption since he really was cheated out of winning the Rumble match. I do like the story they created to ignite the Flair/Savage feud. I remember having the magazine that had the photoshopped images of Flair with Liz. Plus it resulted in a very good match overall with a rewarding Savage win. If Social Media and the Internet were a thing back then, they could have really pushed the angle further.

I always felt that Jim Crockett Jr. just let things play out because he didn't like Jim Hurd's attitude towards their champion. I'm sure the NWA could have sent Ric Flair the 10 Lbs of Gold Belt as the real NWA championship and still recognized him if Hurd would have played along. I still feel today that would have been a good olive branch to WWF from the NWA. That didn't happen, but imagine if WWF and NWA could have found a common ground and made business agreements between each other.

Mad how this didn’t happen. But a lot of mania 8 was like this should’ve had the blow off with macho and Jake, the start of Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty feud, keep Bret Hart v Piper for the IC (which was a classic) maybe put Taker v Sid and main event Flair(wwf champ) v Hogan. Nevertheless I do like mania 8 especially Hart v Piper and Macho v Flair, both classic matches

Finish should've been booked the same way Hogan/Sid was. Perfect interferes, gets Flair DQ'd. Sid comes down, attacks Hogan with Flair and Perfect. Warrior and/or Savage runs in to make the save. Preferably BOTH, so the Warrior/Sid and Flair/Savage programs can begin at that point. Hogan exiting the WWF shouldn't have had any impact on the match. Card really could've been HBK/Tito Savage/Jake (blowoff instead of at a damn SNME) Face Taker/Heel Sid Piper/Hart (IC title) Money Inc/Road Warriors (Tag titles) Ric Flair/Hulk Hogan (WWF title) You can use the other filler matches (Tatanka/Martel, Skinner/Owen Hart, 8 man tag) to expand the card, but that set of six matches would've held up against any of the first 15 WM cards. And it could've easily worked out that way.

As much as this sounds good, I think we would all instead be complaining about the DQ finish being a weak ending to a WM like we are now. As much as Flair vs Hogan should have happened, the Savage match was amazing and helps keep WM 8 watchable for me

Pay per views, should have decisive finishes. People are paying big money to watch these events. Also it’s WrestleMania, it’s the end of the storylines for year or season. DQ endings should be few and far between. Otherwise; you’ll have WrestleMania 9 where the majority of the matches were dq finishes. It’s also one of the worst manias of the time, because of that reason.

All I'm saying is, if you're going to have this unique circumstance, where your 24K golden goose is exiting at this point, and YOU ALREADY BOOKED your main event to end with a DQ with a great run in by the returning superstar in Warrior, you can do that with the Hogan/Flair match. Fans would've still gone home happy if there's a Savage/Warrior/Hogan triumverate ending the show in the ring together. Guaranteed. ESPECIALLY if you acknowledge their histories and have them cool with each other.

WM 8 back in 1992 would have been Tbe Perfect time for Hogan Vs Flair seeing as Hogan left WWE after Summerslam 1993 and Flair left WWE and went back to WCW in 1993 1992 at WM was the best Chance for that match in WWE but instead qe got Macho Man vs Flair at WM 8 and had to wait till 1994 for the firat Hogan vs Flair Match in WCW after Hogan got to WCW

I was there for Wrestlemania VIII. Piper-Bret was exceptional. Flair-Savage was great too. Hogan-Sid was garbage except for the Warrior's return. I do remember that Hogan got an amazing pop during his entrance even though Hulkamania was supposedly slowing down.

Should have had Hogan beat Flair at Mania for the title. But then do something like they did with Steamboat with Honkytonk Man, have Flair beat Hogan on superstars via trickery during the week in a sort of random match. You could maybe build the Flair-Savage angle for Summerslam instead.

Brilliant and thorough details in what should have been the match of a generation. Think the egos were in full swing on both sides and unfortunately the timing did prove to be too turbulent and probably a bit late Like you stated that it was highly unlikely Flair would go over and even if he did Hogan would sabotage the match to protect his on image above the business like always did Great upload as always WB

Flair said that when he went to the WWF he wasn’t over with their audience - The WWF fans didn’t know who he was. He wasn’t a draw. This comment resonated with me as when I was a kid and Flair debuted on WWF television, I hadn’t heard of him and he certainly didn’t fit the mold of a typical Hogan big-man opponent. Flair looked like an out of shape geezer who Hogan would make short work of.

I think the sway Flair would have had with McMahon is being very much underrated here. Vince knows the kind of Legend Flair is/was in the business, e.g. his Rumble victory was the greatest up to that point (of all time imho). Also Flair's relationship with the N.W.A. when Vince Snr was included. I agree they couldn't have Flair go over Hogan in a Mania main event, indeed I think having Hogan go over Flair with ease is one of the things that ended up, in the very long term, killing WCW. Therefore, I'd conclude a hypothetical Flair/Hogan Mania 8 match would've seen Hogan win by the pinfall but in a way that kept Flair very strong for a potential rematch, e.g. Flair getting a three count earlier in the match when the referee was down due to his own shenanigans backfiring (Heenan's reaction to this on commentary would have been gold) 👍

Wasn't a missed opportunity. I saw Hogan vs Flair at MSG in 91 and the match wasn't that good and Hogan was burnt out at the time with the whole steroid drama that year. It didn't do good business cause business SUCKED in 1991. Savage was the better opponent for Ric and they had a good match at Mania 8.

Maybe their house show matches weren t good but i m sure flair and hogan at that time could have done a good match in a wm PPV. They both were in their primes and knew how to entertain. Hogan vs Warrior , or hogan vs André were great matches and flair was good

The MulToyVerse He was never the President he just played one on TV, what he actually was truthfully was the HEAD PROMOTER IN TORONTO, CANADA and Vince McMahon loved his family and offered him the tv role. He DIDNT have any say in storylines.

A lot of people forget the fact that when Hogan and Flair went around the North east loop when Flair first came in, including the Garden...ticket sales were poor. It didn't catch fire the way everyone thought it would and everyone seems to either forget that or they're just unaware. Also, those saying the finish was probably the issue, if that really was the case then that tells you that Vince wanted Flair going over, because there's absolutely no chance that Flair was being difficult. No top guy has put over as many people as Ric Flair. He even done the honours for Hogan in several different matches just two years later in his own backyard of WCW when Hulk came in. There's absolutely no credible scenario in which Ric Flair becomes the person holding things up in the finish room in the WWF in 1991/1992. Along with the fact that their initial program on the house show loop sold poorly, Vince was probably tired of Hogan saying "that doesn't work for me, brother" that he just pulled the plug and went in a different direction. Anyone with a proper grasp on history knows that there is absolutely no chance that Ric Flair would hold up headlining his first Wrestlemania in a dream match the world wanted for 10 years, just because he didn't want to lose to another iconic name in the business in Hogan. Anyone who tries to claim any different is clueless about wrestling history and clueless about the history of both guys involved.

But the scandal makes so much sense along with Hogan and WWF not putting over the other companies guy at WM sounds very accurate

Hogan vs Flair was a missed iconic match however the outcome if done clean we all know and would have been Hogan, easily. Also Flair just realistically beating Hulk would have been outrageous at that time.
