Hogwarts Legacy Switch Review 

Ahh, that would explain the "loading doors" I experienced. I haven't played the Ps5/Series X version but have seen it in action and it looks gorgeous. I'm still very impressed with how it looks and runs on the Switch all things considered.

Aren't these changes on the Ps4 / Xbox one version as well?

I would be keen to know this! Hopefully someone can confirm?

Thank you for the feedback on the review! Yeah I've had a few comments like that but people probably don't realise some people prefer to game on the Switch, or don't own other consoles. I'm still playing it after review (something that doesn't happen often) and I'm really enjoying it still!

I think it's a tricky balance of compromise and engines. A few of the Devs I've spoken to say the Switch is the easiest to get a license for, but the hardest to develop on due to hardware limitations. Switch gamers have been lucky with some really well optimized games lately like this and Borderlands 3.

@@whatsitlikeau i mean re8 is running on the iphone 15 and on switch we get the cloud versions for full price. I'm pretty sure it would be possible to run re7,8,2 and 3 remakes on switch

I just hope that now they have time to optimize the PC version because it's still a mess. It still has a floppy performance and a lot of players are still complaining about bugs that won't let them continue with both the main story and side missions.

I mean, when you water EVERYTHING down and it looks like you're playing on a literal potato 🤦

I wonder if it's harder to optimise on PC because of varying hardware? I have no idea if they will still update it unfortunately.

100% I don't know why they made it cloud, especially since SE have so many quality titles on Switch. I sunk most my weekend into Star Ocean for Review and its probably my game of the year (This is a contender too!)

I spent a couple of days looking into it and now know how important accessibility in games is. Portkey Games have certainly done a wonderful job on this one and as someone who games almost exclusively on Switch, I'm so happy I get to finally enroll in Hogwarts!

Only a little bit in the castle, mainly around the main entrance. Aside from that the framerate drop is negligible

That's good to know! Loading times into towns can be a bit frustrating, especially when you only need to pop into town for a quest to send you right back out!

The loading times are fine.. maybe it’s because I grew up playing older consoles which had insane loading time, n disc changes . Switch version is exactly what we would ask for in a mobile version of the game, story all in take, decent graphics but for the switch it’s like wow. But it’s the whole game.. n it’s really good. This is like Witcher 3 on switch status. I bet with a few updates it will improve. I own both on ps5 n switch. It’s just show switch age but at the same time the amazing ability the switch has on some current titles being ported to it. Personally I love that Nintendo refuses to give in and do unnecessary mid cycle upgrades. I miss the days when consoles were really pushed near end of life cycle of the consoles. The switch in itself has proven time n again it’s all about quality not quantity. I say keep making games for it for as long as it can then release new console. Microsoft n Sony should take note. Because eventually we will all get tired of the mid cycle upgrade n just stop buying on original release dates because first gen of a consoles seem more like a beta type .. that isn’t finished

@whatsitlikeau it's not even about the bugs it's the overall games they're lack luster compared to most RPGs The recent games have a small empty open world with no side quests or world events and You can't even talk to NPCs or explore any buildings The graphics aren't even the problem it's just the fact they make a game that lacks content and gets boring and repetitive pretty quickly

I think it's really well optimised for Switch so I'm really happy with it. I think it depends on what your favorite system is

No point comparing a 10-year-old handheld console to a $3k PC in my opinion. Obviously, compromises are made which we have to point out, but it's a technical success which has actually had a performance boost since this video.

The loading doors did catch me off guard. When walking around I found it was fine but running seemed to make doors load longer. Glad you've been enjoying the game and I can't wait to see what the Switch succesor will be like!

I think they could have done a little more in the running sections to alleviate frame drops because remember the Switch is almost 7 years old, but it’s a testament to the Switch and more importantly the development team, that Hogwarts Legacy is running at all on Switch.

Someone pointed that out to me too. I haven't played it on the bigger consoles, but I got told it's all open with no loading. Still very happy with the Switch version!

The PS5 version looks really good! I would say the SSD (and the power of the PS5 itself) would allow the game to have no loading areas at all.

Xbox 360/PS3 level in docked mode, lower resolutions in handheld mode

Its a bit better than 360/PS3 but closer to those consoles than Xbox one/ps4

Safe to say at a base level, its 360/PS3. That being said, 1st party titles fare a bit better and there's some exceptional ports that get more out of the system.

100% What's even crazier is they have balanced out the performance and graphics more since launch, so it looks and runs even better.

@@whatsitlikeau Yup I just 100%ed the Switch version last night. I was burnt out by the time I unlocked the south east portion of the map but it didn’t take long to power through. Other than the aesthetics this game is nothing like Three Houses lol but equally enjoyable

JK was spitting truth, and the truth hurt the ability of some people who have no other means of control over others' agenda, and that upset them. I am all for freedom, but freedom does not mean you get to define the reality that you want.

I had a very similar conversation the other day with my friend about Helldivers 2. It's taking the world by storm and it's not a AAA title. I think shareholders have too much input on devs now which is unfortunate, but there's nothing wrong with just making a game fun

I've never experienced the haptic feedback on PS5, does it add much to the experience?

@@whatsitlikeau The chosen person misses speech and subtitles in multiple language sets. The bug is already reported by several ppl. It just sucks that you can't hear anything, not even read.

Hopefully they will address it soon! I know Swtich patches can take some time to get approved but I would say something will be updated soon.

Good news is Outer Worlds just got announced yesterday! I think it comes to cost vs sales. GTA could run for sure, maybe Online wouldn't work very well? BG3 devs did a great job of bringing Divinity 2 to the Switch. Here's hoping the Switch successor sees more love from bigger studios!

That's a fair assessment. I personally love playing handheld so it's Switch for me, but there are compromises that come with that

I only have the Switch. and I don't really like games like this on the computer. Sometimes it's the only option some of us have is to play it on the Switch. I'm not gonna buy a new console just for this game when I won't even buy any other games

I'm not too sure to be honest, but there are some technical limitations on the Switch version like the doors and load in areas when entering a town

Thats a fair call. I almost exclusively game on Switch since I travel, so it's perfect for me even though it's not the best-looking version of the game.

As far as I can tell, it's an adaptive 720p. Performance wise much better than the Witcher 3, more on par with No Mans sky if that helps?

Right you are. I love the Switcher, but it's resolution in handheld is much lower than Hogwarts from what I can see. I'm not a technical analyst though!

Performance isn't perfect on Switch, but framerate drops on this game are negligible. I didn't have any major stutters or performance issues during my gameplay, except one set of stairs in the Hogwarts Castle where it dipped from 30 to 24 fps. Hope that helps!

What sort of frames are you getting?

@@whatsitlikeau max cpu 1785MHZ gpu 921mhz ram 1862mhz when im in Howard castle i get 40 to 50 fps when im outside like hogsmi i get max 30 to 35 fps plus with AIO UPDATER i was able to fix the blury graphic temperature never reach 70 degree

To do that you'll need a modded switch runs even beter on the MARIKO oled switch since it has max cpu 2300MHZ gpu 1267MHZ ram 2331MHZ

Its an old console what do you expect

I didn't even realise but the Switch is almost 10 years old now. I think there are a lot of people who love Harry Potter and only game on Switch so it's great they weren't left out. Here's hoping the next Nintendo Console will be a much more powerful system.

I'm not much of a mobile phone gamer but I did see the Company of Heroes phone port and it looked great too, so I'm sure it would look good. I'm too old though and prefer buttons for gaming hahaha.

Not really. The door loading sometimes is about 5-10 seconds or so. The main load encounters are leaving or entering the castle, or hogsmeade.

@@whatsitlikeau do you have to travel often to hogs… where the loading takes forever or does the game do a good job of keeping you in one area for a while? I could see this being partially annoying when you have to go to different “shops” and they have to load. I’m surprised the shops cant just have a 5-10 second load time like the rooms in the castle… but I’m assuming it’s cuz you’re going from outside to inside? At least if the audio is still good high quality then I’m sold! It’s between this and super Mario RPG for me? Hard choices. Just got Mario wonder too but always wanted to play in open world Hogwarts

@@whatsitlikeau the coolest thing for me is that you get a little “illumination” that guides you to your next mission without the castle being way too confusing walking around aimlessly ? Is this actually useful or is it like cheating ? Lastly does the inside of the castle actually look decent in 1080 compared to handheld? All I care about is smooth 30 FPS AND IM SOLD!!! Imagine this on switch 2 working incredibly fast! I just hope they Dont re-release the game with no loading times 😂

It didn't really bother me much as when you do quests they are generally in a specific area. Shops only have small load ins. The worst load time is when entering the open world but even then it dodnt bother me too much.

It's so useful! You don't have to use it at all but I don't know much about the HP universe so it helped so much and was discrete enough. It's actually all explained in the game that the professors made you the magical field guide

It certainly ly would have taken a lot of work getting it to run as well as it does. Fantastic job by the team

I was playing it for an hour or so in handheld on an OLED and it looked amazing. Unfortunately the game didn't support the capture button for footage so I had to play hooked up to my laptop to capture the footage. This review is made from almost 8 hours of captured footage!

I think Nintendo and Microsoft have a lot of mutual respect together. I do hope the next console is powerful, but Nintendo seem to trade off innovation to be one generation behind.

Sony is killing Nintendo? In which universe? The switch outsells the PS4 & PS5 in hardware AND software. Nintendo has two games out as contenders for the Game of the Year Awards plus further categories like Art Design, Music and Score, Action Adventure and more. That is more than ANY other company has. Don't get me wrong,i prefer playing on next gen consoles and PC over my Switch, but Nintendo has nothing to worry about.
