Take a trip along the Hokitika Line, it only serves the Westland dairy factory now, but trips are made daily.

Went on the railway bridge between Greymouth and Hokitika many times in the 1980s when cars had to use it, Thankfully they now have a new bridge for cars

I went down this line many years ago behind steam loco W192 and although most of it is the same, the Arahura and Taramakau River bridges have changed considerably.

Good video. Those controlled crossings need barrier arms - only need to prevent one or two accidents to pay for themselves.

Some of those crossing had no protection - not even lights. That one in the middle of town had nothing - that was BAD. Even the car had to brake (tbh he should have been more careful but it does show how unprotected they were).

fabulous - I cant understand why there are no bells on the first 2 level crossings in this video - it is really obvious one car only sees the train at the last minute and jams the brakes on..

Track gang needs to get the chainsaw out and trim all those trees. Strange to see how slow we went while cars were zapping at a zillion miles an hour. Good vid though.

I see some new sections of track along the right of way, and some where the weed sprayer needs to be brought in. Is Kiwi Rail upgrading? Great video.

I know it is a freight train, but boy that was slow going.

good video. i thought the greymouth yards would b a mainline and maybe 1 or 2 sidings but its surprisingly big. just a pity the camera was so close to the horns. bit overwhelming. just about blew out my ear drums

What is the line speed on the Hokitika Line? If the km pegs are correctly spaced the speed was 78km/h from the 1/2km peg to the 26km peg, I'm picking the video maybe running at double or triple speed. Anthony
@samocooper9070
@samocooper9070 2 года назад
40kmph max, but with a lot of 10s and 25s. Yes the video is playing back at double speed, you can slow it down in RU-vid if you want original speed

Just wondering why nz locomotives have their horns right in the engineers face?
@hemiatehuia
@hemiatehuia 2 года назад
Its actually not in the drivers view, it's just where the camera is mounted.
@paulwarner5395
@paulwarner5395 2 года назад
@@hemiatehuia Yes but it must make a loud noise in front of them rather than on the left side or on the roof where it would be a lot quieter but have the same effect as a warning devise.

@@paulwarner5395 yeah true that. 👍

@@paulwarner5395 Probably no room on the roof or sides; the locos can be a *very* tight fit through tunnels.

What sort of rubbish country has a train line through the middle of a town centre. With a busy road and doesn’t have boom gates and/or flashing lights? Even tourist railways in rural areas here in Australia have them.
@samocooper9070
@samocooper9070 4 месяца назад
Not sure you needed to include the rubbish country part, are you going for a reaction or just enjoy being nasty? As it is the line speed is 10kmph with clear signage either side, however I do think there needs to be bells and arms on that crossing.
